Chapter 1

"Did you hurt your eyes?" my husband, William Yore, asked Nancy Jennings as he helped her to her feet.

Blood flowed from my palms and stained the snow beneath me.

I braced my hands against the ground and tried to push myself up, but I fell again when my fingertips dug into the broken stones.

William didn't turn to look at me.

Nancy leaned against him and said, "I'm fine, William. Julia's bleeding."

Only then did he turn to look at me, his gaze sweeping across my palms.

"When did you regain your eyesight?" I asked, staring at him.

"Let's return to the manor first," William replied, looking away.

I laughed, coughing when a few snowflakes landed in my mouth. "Answer me, William."

Nancy shrank back into William's chest. She tugged on his sleeve and said, "It's all my fault. Julia wouldn't be acting like this if I didn't reveal that you can see."

William patted the back of her hand and said, "It's not your fault."

He then looked at me, frowning when he said, "The mountain path is dangerous. Don't make a fuss here."

My palms were still bleeding, but he was accusing me of making a fuss.

We returned to Yore Manor.

The gatekeeper lowered his head and averted his gaze when he noticed William stepping over the threshold without any issue.

The housekeeper, Olivia Patterson, approached us, reaching her hands out before retracting them.

I stopped at the doorway and clenched my fists.

It seemed that Nancy wasn't the only one who knew about William's restored eyesight. Many of the household staff members knew as well.

I was the only one who held his hand every day, warning him that there were stairs ahead and to be careful with his footing.

When we reached the main hall, I reached out to remove William's coat, but my hands froze in midair.

William's hands also froze in place. A few seconds later, he retracted them.

"Going to cause a fuss again?" he asked as he looked at me.

"I just remembered that you don't need my help anymore," I replied.

Nancy sat next to the fireplace, cradling a cup of hot tea in her palms. Her eyes were fixed on the floor.

Olivia stepped forward and said, "Ms. Jennings had quite a scare today, Mrs. Yore. You're hurt too. Why don't you let the doctor take a look at you? You can discuss the other matters tomorrow."

"When did you start hiding the truth from me in the last three years?" I asked.

Olivia opened her mouth but didn't answer my question.

"That's enough, Julia Camerson," William snapped with a frown.

"Just tell me how long you've been lying to me."

"The condition of my eyes changes from day to day," William answered, averting his gaze. "I wasn't lying to you."

The corners of my lips pulled down into a frown. "So, you were able to see everything for the last three years? You saw how I tested the roads, tested the medicines, and fell down?"

William didn't answer.

"Don't blame Will, Julia," Nancy said, looking at me. "He just didn't want to be treated like a patient all the time. He was such a proud man in the past. It makes sense that he would get upset if someone asks him if he's in pain every day."

"For the last three years, you bombarded me with questions with every step that I took," William said, looking at me. "You asked if I could see, if I was in pain, or if I was tired. I can still move around without you by my side. You're the one who treated me like an invalid."

Everyone in the manor remained silent.

I hid my injured hands in my sleeves, digging my nails into my palms.

William stumbled backward, his boots splashing muddy water everywhere."I wanted Will to believe that you were ruthless," Nancy choked out. "I wanted him to think that I'm the only one who didn't force him to do anything. I never planned to actually send you to your death."I didn't interrupt her."Were you the one who ordered Holly to buy the red ink?""Yes.""Were you the one who switched the dosage of the medicine?""Yes.""Did you take something to make yourself vomit blood that night?"Nancy bit her lip.I stared at her. "Answer my question."Nancy closed her eyes and answered, "Yes."The onlookers began to criticize her."How despicable!""She ruined Dr. Juleson's reputation, and now she has the nerve to beg for help. How shameless.""Her heart is rotten to the core!"Nancy covered her ears and shrieked. "I just wanted to live! I saved Will. He's obliged to protect me!"William suddenly walked to my side. He ignored Nancy as he faced me and slowly sank to his knee

One rainy day, I heard a set of footsteps stop outside the door when I was testing a child's sensitivity toward light and securing a veil around his eyes.I looked up and saw William standing in the rain. His clothes hung loosely on his frame. Rain dripped from the tips of his hair and soaked into his collar.William stood outside the door and didn't come in. He didn't call out to me either. He simply stood rooted to the spot and watched me wrap the veil around the child's eyes."Who's that, Dr. Juleson?" the child asked.I washed my hands and answered, "A patient."William's mouth fell open, but he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue.I approached the entrance of the clinic."Are you here for a diagnosis, Mr. Yore? Or are you here to catch your wife who ran away from you?" I asked.William tightened his grip around a torn page. "Julia…""There's no Julia here," I said while looking at him. "There's only Carmen Juleson.""I understand," he mumbled in a low

William looked at Nancy. "Funeral preparations?" he asked.Tears clung to Nancy's lashes as she looked up. "Julia misunderstood me before she passed away. I was thinking that I could atone by taking charge of her funeral preparations."Olivia sighed and said, "You're so thoughtful, Ms. Jennings."The corners of William's lips pulled down into a frown. His eyes were completely devoid of mirth."Bring the account books."Nancy was briefly stunned. One of the household staff members entered the front hall, carrying a stack of account books with her.William flipped one open and said, "Nancy Jennings has spent 1,300 dollars on medicinal herbs and 670 dollars on clothes and accessories after joining Yore Manor three years ago. "Her purchased items include a premium bed with down bedding, silver accessories, and pearl jewelry. All items were paid for with Mrs. Yore's dowry."Nancy curled her hands into fists as she braced herself against the floor.William looked up and said, "You

I was on a cargo ship that was heading south when I regained consciousness. The boatwoman informed me that I had been unconscious for two days."You're quite lucky that you managed to grab onto a withered tree under the cliff, miss. You would have been swept away by the river a long time ago if you didn't."I raised my hand and brushed my fingers against my hair. The emerald hairpin had snapped, and I had left my bloody shirt under the cliff.Julia Camerson had died that night.I changed my name to Carmen Juleson.A snowstorm had blocked off the mountain path when the boat reached the south border. The dilapidated church on the outskirts of the city was packed with blind children and injured soldiers.I set up a medical tent at the church and treated their eyes.Someone asked me where I came from."The north," I said."Do you have any family left?""No," I answered as I prepared the medicine.…Meanwhile, in the north, nobody in Yore Manor dared to raise their voice when

I had written a single sentence on the note. "I won't be your eyes anymore, William."William gripped the note tightly.James sank to his knees and exclaimed, "Mr. Yore!"William didn't look up. Instead, he flipped through the stack of medicine test records."March 7th: Ingested Sagevine. Experienced aching eyes, tinnitus, and slight tremors in the right hand."March 19th: Tried Ivoryroot. Vomited in the middle of the night. Kept it hidden."April 3rd: The light has returned to William's eyes. He didn't give me an answer when I questioned him. I'll wait for him to tell me."William crumpled the paper as he stared at the last sentence. He suddenly recalled how I had stopped reading the official document that day even though I was only halfway done."Why did you stop?" he'd asked."The light's too dim," I'd replied with a smile. The papers crumpled under his tightening grip."She already knew…" he whispered."Ms. Julia said that she'll believe you if you were willing to tel
