“So, what’s the occasion?” Sophie asked in the middle of slicing apples. The maids were standing awkwardly—this was supposed to be their job, slicing and preparing. But immediately after they reached the kitchen, Sophie just took over and started moving.

Her mother, Victoria Langham, just let her be. She told the maids to prepare the cups and cakes instead.

“Nothing in particular,” Victoria replied. “I’ve been having apple tea every day since you left.”

Sophie went quiet with that answer.

“So, what’s so urgent that you have to go back to England?” Sophie asked.Oliver raised his brows, offering Sophie a side glance before focusing back on the road. But seeing as he didn’t answer, Sophie added, “Knowing you, you must’ve set up a system where you don’t need to deal with things in person unless absolutely necessary, so you can stay in the States for the longest time without any real worries for your England operation. And yet, here you are.”Oliver smiled. “I’m honored that you think that way.”“I don’t ‘think’. I know it’s true.”“Well,” Oliver inhaled. “I just realised that Beckett couldn’t possibly face Ballard alone, so I’m here to make some preparations.”Sophie paused for a beat. “Is the senator really that dangerous? Why is he so fixated on Adrian anyway?”Oliver stayed silent for a while. He stopped at a red light, then met Sophie’s gaze without saying anything. There was a smile on his face, but Sophie could tell that there was something else underneath.“...Why?

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   095 - Surely I Still Have A Second Chance

Adrian flipped over his files, and he stopped at the page about a consulting firm. It was one Sophie introduced him to. One Sophie spent three dinners with before they finally agreed for a partnership. Adrian once again let out a scoff. Even now, he still somehow relied on Sophie’s support.Flipping through pages by pages, he realized more of such partners—one that Sophie managed to gain for him. All those time Adrian thought Sophie was attending parties and social events because she wanted to fit in. He thought Sophie was desperate to be included in high society, and she brought home partners to prove herself.Turned out, Sophie didn’t have to prove anything. She was a Langham all along. This was her world all along. And the partners that she brought in from these networking events, they were the partners who stayed, independent of Langham. That way, when Langham decided to pull out their support, they were unaffected, and those who eventually left, left on their own accord. This on

Though Beckett Holdings survived, downsizing was inevitable.Adrian Beckett had been busy with heaps of equally important matters—the cancellation of the DC branch, the reassignment of personnel, the layoff and resignation of staff. There were also matters regarding contracts and partnership, as Beckett Holdings could no longer fulfil the requirements for some of them.He managed to avoid bankruptcy, yet it was a fact that Beckett Holdings was not as mighty as it used to be.After dealing with cancellations and penalties, only a few contracts remained. Though not spectacular, it was at least enough to keep things afloat. Among them was the development of Sunside Valley.Adrian massaged his throbbing head as the board was discussing the contract. He was fully aware that this contract was suspicious. The fact that after everything, Ballard still didn’t pull out of the partnership and instead proposed an adjustment to the contract terms posed as a bigger red flag. Too kind, too generous

She told the maids to prepare the cups and cakes instead.“Nothing in particular,” Victoria replied. “I’ve been having apple tea every day since you left.”Sophie went quiet with that answer.Victoria Langham was always a quiet, devoted wife. In a way, Sophie modeled Sophie Beckett after her—the wife supporting her husband behind the scenes. If her father was the pillar, the building framework, then her mother was the concrete. Together, they made a strong structure.Sophie chuckled. Despite running miles and miles away, apparently she didn’t go as far as she had thought. Even with distance between them, Sophie still bought a piece of home with her in the form of her mother’s demeanor. In

Sophie put her fingerprint on the scanner by the gate. Her heart clenched when it still recognized her and a side door was unlocked to let her in.“Welcome, Miss Sophie Langham,” said the system. Sophie smiled, feeling a sting in her heart—the good kind. She was almost sure that they’d erase her data, but now she knew that it was not the case. From the gate to the main building, she still needed to walk for around ten minutes through the gardens. She welcomed the walk. In fact, she needed it to mentally prepare, and the garden was just perfect for it.The green scenery calmed her mind, and she was more surprised that she could still recognize a lot of things. The gazebo, the pond, even some of the gardeners. Some even waved at her, clearly wanting to talk but were held by their job. Sophie just smiled and waved back.In the middle of her walk, a golf cart approached. Sophie chuckled when she saw Edmund sitting behind its steering wheel.“Sophie! I told you to call me when you arrive a

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic.Sophie waved goodbye to Oliver, who although reluctant, still had business to attend and couldn’t go with her.“How long will you be in London?” Oliver asked.“Not long,” Sophie shook her head. “I will probably stay for a night before I take a train to Langham.”“I see,” Oliver nodded. “Then, I guess I’ll see you back home.”Sophie blinked. Somehow, she had expected Oliver to offer her dinner or something. But a man came running, whispering something to Oliver, and his face got all serious again, so Sophie assumed he was just too busy.“Okay. See you later, Ollie.”Oliver just nodded as he walked away, his steps fast. Sophie watched him disappear into the crowd before she turned around. ‘I’ll see you back home,’ Oliver said. Home. The word lingered. A single, simple word with equally as simple meaning, yet Sophie had spent years trying so hard to redefine it. All that running, only to come back here. Back to the starting point. But right
