Adrian fulfilled his promise. Just as the clock struck midnight, Sophie could hear the beeping of their door system. She swiftly assumed her usual role. The wife, who was always ready to welcome her husband back.

“Adrian, you’re too much,” Sophie said with a pout. “Not a word, not even a text. Do I have to go through Mr. Abbott to get news on you from now on?”

Usually, Adrian would coax her when he saw her pout. But now, he seemed a bit awkward.

“Adrian? What? Did something happen?”

Adrian was at a loss for words. But he didn’t need to say anything, because from behind him, a figure stepped out. Petite, precious, with a professional blazer and pencil skirt.

Julia Hall.

“Ms. Hall, you’re here,” Sophie said, not bothering to sound welcoming. She then turned to Adrian, her eyes demanding explanation.

“It’s late. I promised you I’d come back tonight, but I can’t just let her come back alone. Her neighborhood…”

He brought her here. Adrian Beckett had really brought Julia Hall to their penthouse.

Good thing Sophie’s smile was so trained, it didn’t betray anything.

“I see,” was all she said. “I understand. It is dangerous for a girl to be out there at this hour. Please wait. I’ll tell my housekeeper to prepare the guestroom.”

Perfect hospitality. Perfect smile. Perfectly understanding wife. Sophie had given Adrian no room for wanting. She once again turned to Adrian, her smile unfazed. “What a good boss you are, Adrian. I’m so proud of you.”

It made Adrian feel even more awkward instead.

“I’m sorry to impose, Mrs. Beckett.” At least Julia Hall had the common sense here.

Sophie expected that much. For a woman to bewitch Adrian, she expected someone capable. “Then, please make yourself at home,” she said, putting emphasis on the last two words. “The housekeeper will let you know when your room is ready.”

As Sophie retreated back to her room, she noticed that Adrian didn’t follow. Once again, she pouted. “Adrian, my dear, don’t you have a promise to fulfill?”

Adrian smiled, saying goodbye to Julia. His gaze lingered for a beat too long before he finally followed Sophie. Sophie didn’t miss it. She couldn’t—they made it too obvious.

In their room, Sophie said nothing. She was just there, calmly making the bed. Adrian sat on an armchair, watching her. Seeing as Sophie was silent, he tried to break it first.

“Are you sulking right now?” he asked with a playful grin. In his head, Sophie was just angry that he disappeared for two days.

“No,” said Sophie. “It’s just that my husband left me at a restaurant, didn’t contact me for two days, and when he came home, he brought a woman with him.”

Adrian was left speechless. He ran a hand through his hair. “I know, I’m sorry, okay?”

Then he pulled out something from his inner pocket. “Here, I got you something.” In his hand was a velvet box. When opened, it revealed a necklace with a brilliant, deep blood ruby as a pendant. “It’s your birthstone.”

Sophie paused. Her gaze landed on the ruby necklace, then to Adrian, smiling obliviously. “No,” she said. “Ruby is a birthstone for July.”

Adrian went stiff. Just for a moment, before he composed himself and pulled out another box. “Sorry, that was a mix-up.”

“Whose birthday was in July, Adrian?”

“Look, it was a mistake, okay? Here, this is your actual gift,” Adrian said, trying to brush the matter over. This time, it was a necklace with aquamarine. A correct stone as Sophie was born in March.

Sophie stayed silent, and it dragged for a second too long that it left Adrian feeling nervous. “Do you like it?” he finally asked.

After a moment, Sophie finally nodded. When she lifted her head, a cute pout was there. “But you still owe me a punishment. Two days, just for me. To replace the two days you went missing on me.”

“Yes, yes, my cute needy darling,” Adrian said, pulling Sophie in an embrace.

“Just. The two of us.”

To this, Adrian didn’t say anything. He just smiled, kissed Sophie on her forehead, then got in the shower. Sophie just watched as his figure disappeared into the bathroom.

She just realized that the oud and musk scent was nowhere to be found.

Sophie was soon able to focus on her job, just in time for the second batch production to be completed. Lyla was busy arranging the shipment from Italy when Sophie finally joined the meeting.“Miss Langham! Things are moving along well. This is the report of what happened while you and Mr. Abbott are occupied,” Lyla said, handing her a file to inspect.“Thank you, Lyla,” Sophie smiled, then found a chair to study it. Nothing worth noting—just Wright Textile proposing several new manufacturers to cover their regular stock while they work with overseas partners for special release. It also seemed like Mr. and Mrs Whitaker were urging her to start a few pop-up stores to get a feel for new branch locations. Sophie chuckled—she hadn’t even thought of opening a new branch, but the idea of a temporary store seemed fun.Especially since Lyla’s reports included invitations for several events.“Everything looks great,” Sophie closed the files. “Thank you, Lyla. Now let’s look into these events

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   083 - Drowning In Our Roles

Adrian woke up to find himself in a dimly lit room. His entire body felt hot. A weird medicinal smell rushed to his nose, and his head pounded once again. He tried to sit, but a hand held him and it pushed him back to bed again. He squinted, and through his blurry vision, made out a silhouette before him. A familiar one.“Sophie?” he said, and even that took a lot of him to do.The silhouette went still for a fraction of a second, but she said nothing. She just extended her hands, cupping Adrian’s face and before long, he felt something touching his lips.It was a kiss. One that Adrian somehow returned, and he blamed the hot sensation in his entire body for that. He knew this was bad news. He remembered what happened before his consciousness faded, so despite his delirious mind that, for a split second, thought it might be Sophie kissing him right now, he knew that was definitely not the case.Yet the more he tried to resist, the hotter his body burned, and his mind went more and more

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   082 - Of Course You Are

“Hello, Soph, sorry for coming so sudden—whoa, looking grim here. What happened?”Oliver was already so chipper the moment he came into the room. Too bad Sophie was too concerned with another matter, otherwise she would gladly play along. Then, he noticed Gregory sitting on the sofa.“Oh, someone’s here. Sorry, I thought—”“No, it’s okay, Ollie,” Sophie waved her hand. “He knows.”“Oh… good then. I always feel awkward when you tell me to pretend we don’t know each other.”Sophie raised her brows. “You don’t look awkward at all.”“You don’t get it,” Oliver shook his head, clicking his tongue as he went. “What I feared was feeling too relaxed and accidentally slipped something out, but never mind that. You’ve been scowling. What happened?”Sophie weighed. Should she tell Oliver?“Is it something internal? If it is, then don’t tell me, it’s okay.”“Well, it’s not exactly a secret. It’s just… awkward.”“Try.”“It’s Adrian Beckett…”Oliver frowned. “Why? Is he still bothering you?”“No, no

Her investigations led them to a hotel, another one owned by Senator Ballard. Her investigators had already begun moving to find out the senator’s information, and look into what he wanted with Adrian or Beckett Holdings. Upon receiving the location, Gregory, too, instructed the guard agency to go there.Everything was confirmed, and now that she had done something, Sophie’s heart felt lighter. Still, she had Gregory stay for further coordination. He looked at her with confusion.“What is it?” Sophie asked.“Nothing, just… I don’t think you’ll still do all this for Mr. Beckett,” Gregory replied, and to that, Sophie sighed.“Even I find it surprising. I was tempted to just leave it alone, but once I noticed the weird things that happened, I just couldn't calm down.”“Do you still care for him, Miss Langham?”The question made Sophie pause. It was the very same question she had asked herself. Did she still care? Or was it just a habit? She had done this for Adrian countless times, smoot

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   080 - Against My Better Judgment

But Sophie debated with herself—should she? What did she care about Adrian? If he found himself in danger, Sophie no longer had any obligation to lend a hand. Knowing her, she wouldn’t be able to concentrate. And if later she found out that Adrian was, in fact, in some sort of emergency, she would never forgive herself for ignoring his call for help.“Look into Adrian Beckett,” she sent. • Playing Mrs. Beckett   079 - A Setup

Adrian stepped out of his car, and his eyes scanned the building before him. It was a commercial district Senator Ballard owned, and people had been whispering about how he even got this many buildings. In front of the main entrance, Julia Hall stood waiting for him. Her smile grew the moment he met her eyes, and it almost reignited whatever flame there was between them. Almost—Adrian knew better. He loved Sophie. That fact still hadn’t changed. Even if he was seeing another woman, even in his unfaithful days, Sophie would always take priority. Now that he knew the damages he had done on his most beloved, he couldn’t afford making any more mistakes. So even if his heart ached, he still managed to return Julia’s smile with a professional greeting.Noticing his attempt at creating distance, Julia’s smile dropped for a moment.
