Adrian fulfilled his promise. Just as the clock struck midnight, Sophie could hear the beeping of their door system. She swiftly assumed her usual role. The wife, who was always ready to welcome her husband back.

“Adrian, you’re too much,” Sophie said with a pout. “Not a word, not even a text. Do I have to go through Mr. Abbott to get news on you from now on?”

Usually, Adrian would coax her when he saw her pout. But now, he seemed a bit awkward.

“Adrian? What? Did something happen?”

Adrian was at a loss for words. But he didn’t need to say anything, because from behind him, a figure stepped out. Petite, precious, with a professional blazer and pencil skirt.

Julia Hall.

“Ms. Hall, you’re here,” Sophie said, not bothering to sound welcoming. She then turned to Adrian, her eyes demanding explanation.

“It’s late. I promised you I’d come back tonight, but I can’t just let her come back alone. Her neighborhood…”

He brought her here. Adrian Beckett had really brought Julia Hall to their penthouse.

Good thing Sophie’s smile was so trained, it didn’t betray anything.

“I see,” was all she said. “I understand. It is dangerous for a girl to be out there at this hour. Please wait. I’ll tell my housekeeper to prepare the guestroom.”

Perfect hospitality. Perfect smile. Perfectly understanding wife. Sophie had given Adrian no room for wanting. She once again turned to Adrian, her smile unfazed. “What a good boss you are, Adrian. I’m so proud of you.”

It made Adrian feel even more awkward instead.

“I’m sorry to impose, Mrs. Beckett.” At least Julia Hall had the common sense here.

Sophie expected that much. For a woman to bewitch Adrian, she expected someone capable. “Then, please make yourself at home,” she said, putting emphasis on the last two words. “The housekeeper will let you know when your room is ready.”

As Sophie retreated back to her room, she noticed that Adrian didn’t follow. Once again, she pouted. “Adrian, my dear, don’t you have a promise to fulfill?”

Adrian smiled, saying goodbye to Julia. His gaze lingered for a beat too long before he finally followed Sophie. Sophie didn’t miss it. She couldn’t—they made it too obvious.

In their room, Sophie said nothing. She was just there, calmly making the bed. Adrian sat on an armchair, watching her. Seeing as Sophie was silent, he tried to break it first.

“Are you sulking right now?” he asked with a playful grin. In his head, Sophie was just angry that he disappeared for two days.

“No,” said Sophie. “It’s just that my husband left me at a restaurant, didn’t contact me for two days, and when he came home, he brought a woman with him.”

Adrian was left speechless. He ran a hand through his hair. “I know, I’m sorry, okay?”

Then he pulled out something from his inner pocket. “Here, I got you something.” In his hand was a velvet box. When opened, it revealed a necklace with a brilliant, deep blood ruby as a pendant. “It’s your birthstone.”

Sophie paused. Her gaze landed on the ruby necklace, then to Adrian, smiling obliviously. “No,” she said. “Ruby is a birthstone for July.”

Adrian went stiff. Just for a moment, before he composed himself and pulled out another box. “Sorry, that was a mix-up.”

“Whose birthday was in July, Adrian?”

“Look, it was a mistake, okay? Here, this is your actual gift,” Adrian said, trying to brush the matter over. This time, it was a necklace with aquamarine. A correct stone as Sophie was born in March.

Sophie stayed silent, and it dragged for a second too long that it left Adrian feeling nervous. “Do you like it?” he finally asked.

After a moment, Sophie finally nodded. When she lifted her head, a cute pout was there. “But you still owe me a punishment. Two days, just for me. To replace the two days you went missing on me.”

“Yes, yes, my cute needy darling,” Adrian said, pulling Sophie in an embrace.

“Just. The two of us.”

To this, Adrian didn’t say anything. He just smiled, kissed Sophie on her forehead, then got in the shower. Sophie just watched as his figure disappeared into the bathroom.

She just realized that the oud and musk scent was nowhere to be found.

By the time she arrived at home, the sun had already set. Sophie sighed, soaking herself in a warm bath. She needed to clean everything—everything Adrian touched, every memory that had been tainted. With the last rinse, the look in her eyes shifted. Gone was the meek, agreeable, and modest Mrs. Beckett. From now on, she was just Sophie. She whisked up a quick meal—some pasta with ready-made sauce—and made herself a pot of tea. Then, she locked herself in her study, reading. She no longer cared how long the time went by.The front door opened with a loud bang. Sophie didn’t bother lifting her head from her book—she already knew what would happen. Adrian would walk with hurried footsteps, scrambling to look for Sophie. Then he would start his speech, about how she misunderstood, or was dramatic, or making things into something they weren't. Sophie reached for her

Adrian’s jaw tightened, he ran his hand through his hair. There was conflict in his face, but then he inhaled, an attempt at calming himself, seizing back control of the situation. Sophie waited. She had time. She had all the time she needed, and didn’t mind watching what Adrian’s response would be—what his next scenario was.Adrian grabbed Sophie’s shoulders, caressing with his thumbs. “Look, Sophie, I know that you’ve been restless lately. But by doing this, you’re making this hard for me.”Sophie's brows lifted."Making this hard for you?"Adrian opened his mouth, then closed it again."That's not what I meant.""No?" Sophie

Sophie had expected this. This was Beckett Holdings headquarter. Of course her crossing path with Julia Hall was inevitable. She had assumed that they would meet in the hallway, or somewhere in the office building. Yet somehow, meeting Julia in front of the private office with a special access made even more sense. “Ah, Ms. Hall,” Sophie said, her smile unwavering. She turned her head to Adrian, maintaining a perfect, unassuming expression. She didn’t need to do much. If Adrian was still the man she knew, he would understand what this calm expression meant. Her eyes locked his, and with a light voice she said, “What a surprise.” All without breaking eye contact. Adrian cleared his throat, his eyes wandered. Then he shot his glance towards Julia, likely asking what she was doing here. Julia, proving herself to be a formidable force, gave away nothing. “Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Beckett. I’m sorry to disturb your quality time, but as Mr. Abbott h

Sophie woke up to the smell of coffee. For a brief, disorienting second, everything felt normal. Then last night came rushing back. The midnight whisper. The birthday call. The promises meant for another woman. And just like that, whatever lingering doubt she still carried vanished. The strange thing was that Sophie wasn't heartbroken anymore. She thought she would be. Three years of marriage should have earned at least that much. Instead, all she felt was an almost frightening sense of clarity. It was ironic how quickly the heart adjusted. Just yesterday she was hurting, almost grieving the crack in her marriage. She had hoped for things to be just her misunderstanding because the look Adrian gave was still the same; pure, loving. But now all that remained was a quiet,

The next thing Sophie knew, they were on a trip to Long Island. It was summer, and the beach provided a perfect summer escapade. Sophie heard the name a lot, and had been curious for a long time. Finally, one more thing to cross from her to-do list in America. When they started driving, it was dark, so Adrian had insisted on Long Island. It was a short, an hour and a half drive. Perfect for this kind of impromptu trip. Sophie said nothing. She was just nodding, going along with it.The entire drive, Adrian had played a lot of music. Nostalgic ones, those that reminded them of simpler times.“Do you remember this, darling?” Adrian said, turning up the volume slightly. Just The Way You Are flowed out of the speaker, bringing along memories of their youth. This used to be their song, one of the tracks that Adrian added to their playlist. Because you’re amazing, Sophie, he had said.Sophie smiled, bobbing her head. She never knew how hard it actually was, trying to appear normal. Like the

Perhaps because of her tears, but Adrian finished work so much earlier than usual. He was home for lunch, taking Sophie to the cheap, vintage-themed diner they used to frequent back in their college days. They had a greasy burger with a side of fries, such a simple meal. The kind that they’d long outgrown. But Adrian didn’t complain.“This is my punishment. I still have one more day to go.”But Sophie knew. Tomorrow was Julia Hall’s birthday. Tenth of July with ruby for a birthstone. The final test Sophie had set for the renowned Nation’s Ideal Husband.“You better keep the promise, Adrian,” Sophie playfully warned. “I’ve made enough compromises for work. I’m not going to forgive anything else.”Sophie had managed to go back to her role. Right now, she was smiling, sprinkling believable awkwardness that occurred after a quarrel. Adrian smiled, pinching Sophie’s nose. A gesture she previously found cute, but now, it just left her feeling conflicted. It turned out affection could be sha
