Their dinner ended on an unsatisfactory note.

Adrian had to leave because of a work emergency. Sophie couldn’t even tell if it was real or not—if Adrian was just stealing fractions of time to be with Julia Hall.

“I’ll make it up to you,” Adrian had said.

But it had been two days, and Adrian was nowhere to be found.

Let alone making it up to her, he hadn’t even had a meal at home since. For two days, Sophie slept by herself. This had happened before, back when Adrian was still establishing his company. Sophie had been understanding, so she tried to be now.

But by the third morning, Sophie grew restless.

Sophie really didn’t want to do this. Her role was a calm and understanding wife, not clingy and insecure. But whether it was insecurity or simple curiosity, she couldn’t help but call Adrian.

No. This made sense. An understanding wife would want to know where her husband was after two days of not seeing him.

One call. Two, then three. On the fourth call, Adrian’s phone was turned off altogether. Weird. Adrian had never done this to Sophie’s calls.

So Sophie called Adrian’s assistant.

“Hello, Mrs. Beckett,” the call was picked up on the first ring.

“Good day, Mr. Abbott. Is Adrian with you?”

“No. He went on an emergency business trip.”

“You’re not with him?”

“No, Mrs. Beckett. I’m needed here to act on Mr. Beckett’s behalf.”

“I see… Is it really busy there?”

“Yes,” Mr. Abbott audibly sighed. “One of our partners suddenly encountered a problem and it directly affected their project with us. Mr. Beckett is currently handling it. I believe he is in Wyoming right now.”

“I understand. Would you please tell me when you hear from him? He’s not answering my calls…”

“I will, Mrs. Beckett,” Mr. Abbott replied readily. Almost too readily. But Sophie brushed it off. Mr. Abbott had always been efficient like that.

Wyoming. Sophie tried to recall all of Beckett Holdings’ partners, and see if there were any in Wyoming. She couldn’t. Was it new?

She started typing on her phone. Only two words. “Investigate Wyoming.”

After receiving an affirmative reply, Sophie packed her purse and began to leave for her own office.

Sophie's office was not what people assumed. What began as Adrian's offhand gift—a boutique to keep her occupied—had quietly become something else entirely. New York's upper class wives wore her pieces without knowing her name. She had made sure of that.

“Mrs. Beckett! People from Fash magazine contacted us.”

When facing her cute subordinate, and seeing how energetic they were, Sophie’s heart settled. Her mind immediately shifted focus and now, she was no longer just Mrs. Beckett. Here in her own little respite, she could finally reclaim a bit of ‘Sophie Langham’.

“Really? What did they say?”

Her subordinate, Lyla Orwell, smiled widely. She couldn’t even hide her excitement, seeing how her body trembled. “They want to feature us!”

“That’s good news,” Sophie nodded, her smile wide. “What is the feature about?”

“Timeless Elegance,” Lyla replied, full of energy. “They like our newest loungewear collection. I knew they would. We emphasize so much on the softness and fabric quality, after all. Not to mention,” Lyla stopped, her eyes scanning Sophie’s attire from top to bottom. Her simple white blouse, neat and effortless, combined with her knee-length navy skirt. “Our Mrs. Beckett here always has that graceful, classy look, so of course all the rich people recognize it!”

Sophie chuckled, ushered everyone in. “Well, then we’ll get busy now, right?”

“Of course!” Lyla said, “I will make sure our feature will be the best feature on Fash ever!”

Sophie couldn’t hold her laughter. It was a good decision to come here. This place could always restore her energy.

But as if not allowing even that, her phone rang.

Adrian.

Her muscle memory took place, “Hello, Adrian! I heard from Mr. Abbott. You’re in Wyoming?”

“Yes, I know. Sorry for not telling you. I’ll be back tonight. I swear.” Adrian’s voice came up, breathy and ragged. Without him here, Sophie didn’t even bother to hide her frown.

“I’m sad, Adrian. You used to tell me even the smallest thing. Now you’re all the way in Wyoming and you didn’t even leave a voice note?”

“Yes, sorry,” Adrian sounded apologetic. “Not good, I’ve made my darling sad. What should I do?”

Sophie smiled. The kind that didn’t reach her eyes.

“You’re gone for two days. Isn’t it right that you spent two days with me as a payback?”

She could hear Adrian laughing. “Of course, darling. Everything for you.”

Before Sophie could say anything, she could hear him gasping, followed by a faint voice of a woman, and the call ended abruptly.

Sophie stood there, stunned.

She looked at her phone, then opened her calendar app.

The private investigator she hired had clearly listed information on Julia Hall. Of course, it included her birthday, which falls exactly two days from now.

“Now, my dear Adrian,” Sophie muttered, “let’s see who you will choose.”

“So you’re getting divorced?” her father asked, in a tone so nonchalant that it didn’t at all feel like there were years between their last meeting.“Yes,” Sophie replied. “Edmund was a great help.”Her father gave a small hum, then silence settled for a while. It wasn't uncomfortable, only unfamiliar after so many years apart. “And are you still planning to stay in the States?”Sophie went silent for a beat. It was somehow refreshing to hear her father speak in such a matter-of-fact way. In truth, he was never a man of emotions. “I started a company here. I might still need to stay here to oversee it.”“I heard. Meadow Lane?”“Yes.”“Is everything okay now?”“Yes,” Sophie nodded. “I got help from Oliver.”Her father paused for a moment. “Why not from us?”“Huh?”“Why didn’t you ask us?”For once, Sophie didn’t know what to say. “I didn’t think you’ll—”“We will, Sophie. Whatever it is you asked for, we will.”A lump formed in her throat. For a few seconds, no one talked.“But I sup

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   072 - Family

Sophie drove back in a daze. Back at Meadow Lane, she managed to do everything required of her, but both Lyla and Gregory could tell that their boss was on autopilot. Still, neither of them said anything until the office began to empty. Just as Sophie was getting ready to head home, someone knocked on her office door. Lyla peeked her head through the doorway, a can of hot chocolate in hand.“Is this a good time, Miss Langham?” she asked. Sophie, who had just finished tidying her desk, smiled.“What is it, Lyla?”“Nothing, really,” Lyla stepped in, leaving the can on Sophie's desk. “It's just that ever since you came back, you've seemed like your head's been in the clouds.”Sophie chuckled a little. “I just got a sudden family matter. Nothing concerning, though.” Sophie took the hot chocolate, “Thank you for this, Lyla. I need this.”“I can tell,” Lyla nodded, a proud smile appeared on her face. She then sighed. “I’m glad that it was nothing, then,” she said, standing up and beginning

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   071 - You Will Always Have Our Support

Sophie remained where she was even after Adrian's car disappeared from view. The bustle inside Meadow Lane continued as though nothing had happened. Customers came and went through the revolving door. Somewhere behind her, Lyla was already giving instructions to another department. Yet Adrian's final revelation lingered in her mind, refusing to leave.‘Your family had been supporting Beckett Holdings.’She had instinctively rejected the idea. It sounded too absurd to be true. Her father had never approved of her decision to go to the States, let alone to marry Adrian. After she insisted on marrying him, she had believed the distance between herself and the Langhams only widened. Father no longer involved her in the family's affairs, he didn’t even look for a way to reach her anymore.

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   070 - A Spark of Hope

Adrian parked across Meadow Lane, his hands remaining on the steering wheel long after the engine was off. The storefront looked busier than the last time he had seen it. Employees carried garment bags between the building and the loading dock, while several customers stepped out with shopping bags bearing Meadow Lane's logo. Even from outside, the place felt lively. He pushed the thought away and entered the building. The receptionist recognized him almost immediately."Hello, Mr. Beckett.""I'm here to see Sophie."Before the receptionist could answer, Lyla walked out from the corridor with several documents tucked under one arm. She stopped the moment she noticed Adrian. There was a brief flicker of surprise across her face before it disappeared behind a professional smile."Good afternoon, Mr. Beckett.""I’m here to see Sophie."Lyla smiled, but it didn’t feel friendly. "Miss Langham is currently in a meeting."Miss Langham. The name grated on him somehow. Perhaps it was the fact

"Mr. Beckett."Adrian looked up from the report in his hands. His legal director stood by his home office’s door with a thick folder tucked under his arm."The documents you requested.""Leave them there."The man placed the folder on Adrian's desk, and Adrian immediately opened it. Inside was a complete list of every partner Beckett Holdings had lost since the divorce became public. Construction companies, logistics providers, insurers, packaging manufacturers, financing firms. They belonged to entirely different industries and had no obvious connection with one another. At first glance, the withdrawals looked almost random. His finger tapped lightly against the desk as he read through the report for the second time. No company willingly paid a penalty fee unless they expected to gain something greater elsewhere. If so many businesses had reached the same decision within such a short period of time, someone had to be coordinating it behind the scenes. Someone influential enough that

  • Playing Mrs. Beckett   068 - Empty

Adrian flipped the contract Julia brought. Everything seemed fair, nothing suspicious. Brought by one of his most promising staff. The company was not big, but from what he’d seen, they didn’t seem to dabble in anything funny. After they were done with whatever projects they had left, the company was at a huge risk if they failed to find a new partnership. The sales of their own products was not too affected despite a small effort of boycott, but if he only depended on it, he might not be able to avoid layoff.Beckett Holdings needed this contract, if only to keep things afloat. More and more partners pulled out at an extremely alarming rate. Adrian knew now—he had angered someone powerful. He didn’t have to guess who it was.He sighed, his mouth pulled into a weary smile. The same person who used to ease his mind during the company’s hard times was now the reason for his biggest challenge yet.How cruel, Adrian thought, as his hand reached for his phone. His finger already hovered ov
