Yara’s POV

Did he really just say that to me?

Whispers started in the crowd, then widespread laughter.

Talia’s poisonous smile was the worst of it. Perfect red lips curved up like she’d just won a prize. She had. Me. My life. My man.

I couldn’t move. Couldn’t blink. I just stood there while three hundred people watched Jeriah Hart dissect me on a stage.

He wasn’t done.

"You want to know what my problem is?" He looked around the room then back at me. "This. This is my problem. Seven years and every single time I had something important, you would show up and do exactly this."

"Jeriah..."

"I'm talking here, shut up!! Seven years I walked into rooms with you and watched people's faces twist with disgust. For seven years I made excuses. Seven years I apologized for bringing you places." He shook his head. "I was embarrassed. Every single time."

"You never said that to me," I said, pathetically. "Not once."

"Because I felt sorry for you."

I heard someone near the front laugh.

"Felt sorry for me," I repeated.

"What did you think was happening? You really believed I was in love with you? Like that?" He looked me up and down slowly.

"Do you even think any man here, any athlete, would want to be seen with something like you?"

Something.

He actually referred to me as a thing.

My hands curled into fists. My nails bit my palms yet the pain kept me upright.

Talia slid in then. Fake sweet. She placed her manicured hand on his chest like she was calming a wild animal.

“Baby,” she cooed, loud enough for everyone to hear. “Be gentle with her. You wouldn’t want her to burst out crying now.”

Her eyes dragged down my body.

“Considering how her clothes are already struggling with her.”

Laughter burst in the room. It stabbed into me from every direction.

I felt everyone’s eyes on my hips. My stomach. The black dress I’d starved myself for. The zipper I’d prayed would hold.

Heat crawled up my neck. My ears rang but Talia wasn’t finished.

“Oh, you poor thing,” she sighed. Then she reached into her diamond clutch and pulled out a blade.

“Here.” Her smile was venom. “Let me help ease the pressure.”

She stepped toward me.

The crowd went silent. Waiting, phones up. Recording.

I didn't know what she was planning until she grabbed the hem of my dress.

No.

The knife pressed against fabric.

Shrrrip.

She cut.

All the way to my thigh.

Cold air kissed my skin. The slit gaped open, exposing my leg, my scars, everything I hated.

Gasps. Then more laughter. Flashes blinded me.

Something inside me snapped and I grabbed her wrist.

Her eyes flew wide. “You...”

Then I shoved her, hard.

She stumbled back with a dramatic little shriek. Right into Jeriah’s arms.

He caught her quickly. Then his head whipped to me, fury twisting his face. The face I used to kiss goodnight.

“Are you out of your mind?” he bellowed. “You touch her again and I’ll...”

I didn’t let him finish.

I stepped up to both of them. My legs shook but I made them stop.

I looked him dead in the eye. Seven years. Seven years of my life poured into him.

Then I spit, right at their feet.

“I hope you both rot in hell.”

Talia gasped. Jeriah’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Good.

I turned.

My chin lifted. My spine straightened. I wouldn’t give them my tears. I wouldn’t give them my breakdown.

I walked.

Each click of my broken heel on marble sounded too loud. The whispers chased me.

“Trash.”

“Fat cow.”

“No wonder he upgraded.”

The slit in my dress flapped against my bare thigh. Exposed.

The doors finally opened.

New York air hit me like a slap. I didn’t stop, nor did I look back.

I heard him on the mic behind me. “Thank you all for supporting me and Talia through this…transition.”

Transition huh?

So my entire life was just a phase to him?

Something he upgraded from?

I walked until the ballroom noise faded. Until my feet bled in my heels. Until I couldn’t hear my own heart shattering anymore.

Home. I needed to get home. To the apartment I paid for. To the bed where I held him when he had nightmares about failing.

It took an hour. I didn't look at a single face throughout the walk.

When I turned onto our street, my chest loosened for the first time.

Then I saw two black trash bags sitting on the sidewalk like garbage.

My name was scribbled on the side in thick marker.

YARA.

  • Playing Pretend With The Mafia Hockey Star    085: THE END....

YARA POV Three months later. The main arena at the New York Ice Center was packed with over eighteen thousand screaming fans. The bright stadium lights reflected off the fresh white ice below, and the noise of the crowd was like a constant roar. It was opening night of the new hockey season. I sat in the front row right behind the home team bench, wearing a custom Volkov jersey. My life had completely transformed. My legal consultancy practice in Brooklyn was thriving. I had passed the bar exam with high marks…and was actively helping young athletes and vulnerable people protect themselves from predatory contracts. I wasn't the broke, heartbroken girl anymore. I was strong, secure, and standing on my own two feet. Down on the ice, the team finished their pre game warmup laps. Kieran looked powerful in his captain's jersey. He skated past the team bench, stopping right near the glass where I was sitting. He pulled off his helmet, and looked right at me. A warm, br

KIERAN POV Three weeks later. The morning sun was shining brightly through the high glass windows of our Brooklyn Apartment. The smell of fresh coffee filled the kitchen. I stood by the stove in a pair of grey sweatpants, flipping pancakes in a pan. My shoulder was completely healed, the bruises from the airport tarmac were gone, and for the first time in my life, my head felt clear. On the kitchen island, my laptop was open to a live sports broadcast. The headline on the screen read: KIERAN VOLKOV SIGNS RECORD EXTENSION WITH NEW YORK. Below the headline was a picture of me, Dominic, and Alaric at the team headquarters yesterday, officially signing my long-term contract extension. The mafia was dead to us, The federal investigation was officially closed. The Volkov Sports brand was entirely clean. I heard soft footsteps coming down the hallway. Yara walked into the kitchen wearing one of my oversized black hockey t shirts, her long blonde hair tied up in a loose bu

  • Playing Pretend With The Mafia Hockey Star    083: WE MADE IT

YARA POV The silence was heavy, broken only by the crackle of burning jet fuel and the distant sound of approaching sirens. Agent Cillian lowered his weapon, his hand staying close to his holster as he stared at the bleeding man on the plane wing. Frederick was on his knees, holding his shattered shoulder. Blood soaked through his expensive suit jacket, Beside him, Sienna was screaming, as she tried to pull her father back from the flames spreading near the left engine. I turned my head toward the shadow of the cargo hangar where the shot had come from. Agent Cillian stood under the bright floodlights, a silenced sniper rifle in his hands, thick smoke rising from the barrel. He slowly lowered the weapon, stepping into the open rain with two armed federal officers right behind him. "FBI! Nobody move!" Cillian’s voice echoed across the tarmac, cold and authoritative. My breath caught in my throat. Kieran didn't drop his gun, but he stepped directly in front of me, shiel

  • Playing Pretend With The Mafia Hockey Star    082: IT'S OVER?!

KIERAN POV The shot rang out before anyone could react. I had drawn the gun from my waistband in a second, firing a single round straight through the forehead of the guard who had put his hands on Yara. The man dropped like a stone, collapsing onto the concrete. "DOWN!" I roared at Yara. Yara didn't hesitate. She threw her body flat against the wet ground as the second guard drew his weapon. I fired twice more. BANG! BANG! The bullet tore straight through the second guard's chest, throwing him backward into the tires of the plane "Shoot him!" Sienna screamed from the top of the stairs, her calm composure instantly shattering into wild panic as she scrambled backward into the cabin of the jet. The two guards near the wing pulled out their guns and opened fire. Bullets tore into the concrete around my feet, sending sparks into the air. I dove behind a heavy steel baggage cart as more bullets hit the metal. I stepped out from behind the cart and fired three shots, hitt

  • Playing Pretend With The Mafia Hockey Star    081: PLAYING HERO

KIERAN POV Twenty minutes later, I was driving Dominic's black SUV through the rain slicked streets of downtown Boston, pushing the engine to its absolute limit. The speedometer stayed at ninety miles per hour as I drove through the late night traffic to Shells Airport. Heavy rain hit the windshield as my heart raced. Beside me in the passenger seat, my leather duffel bag sat open. Inside was the kit I had kept hidden in the back of Dominic's trunk since the night we raided the Brooklyn warehouse…a heavy 9mm handgun, two extra magazines, and a satellite tracker. My phone chimed on the dashboard. Dominic's name flashed on the screen. I hit the speaker button. "Talk to me," I barked. "Marcus just pulled the flight plans," Dominic said, his voice coming through fast and urgent over the speaker. "A private Gulfstream registered to a Swiss holding company filed a flight path from Shells to Zurich ten minutes ago. Departure window closes in twelve minutes." "Is Agent Cil

  • Playing Pretend With The Mafia Hockey Star    080: SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO ME!

KIERAN POV The noise inside the away locker room was deafening. Ice buckets were clattering, equipment bags were being thrown around, and Alaric was blasting music from the speakers near the showers. The team had just destroyed Boston on their home ice in game one of the Finals, but I couldn't care less about the win. I unstrapped my chest pads, pulled my damp sweat shirt over my head, and tossed it into the laundry bin. My shoulder was aching, but my mind was completely focused on the corridor outside. I grabbed my phone from my locker shelf. Zero missed calls. Zero text messages from Yara. My brow furrowed. She had promised to wait by the private family reception room near the press tunnel while I finished my post game media obligations. That was twenty minutes ago. "Kieran, great power play in the second period," Sergei said, walking past my stall with a stack of stat sheets. "The sports networks are already running the highlights." "Yeah. Thanks uncle," I muttered, p
