Evian

The silence after his proposal did not break.

It fractured.

Kate’s painted smile trembled. My stepmother looked between us like she was watching her entire social ladder rearrange itself. My father tried to speak twice and failed both times.

And he just stood there.

Calm. Untouched. Certain.

“Marry me.”

Not a question. Not a plea.

A claim.

I felt every eye in the room burning into my back, waiting for me to shrink.

Instead, I stepped forward.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

I stopped close enough to smell the faint, expensive scent on his collar. His gaze lowered slightly, watching me like he was curious what move I would make next.

Good.

Let him be curious.

I reached up and straightened his tie.

Gasps fluttered through the room.

Then I rose on my toes and kissed him.

Not soft.

Not shy.

Possessive.

The sound of my stepmother’s sharp inhale was almost satisfying.

His hand came to my waist instantly. Not startled. Not confused. He deepened it just enough to make it real. To make it convincing.

When I pulled back, I kept my hand on his lapel.

“I suppose,” I said lightly, as if discussing dinner plans, “if you’re asking so seriously, we should at least talk properly.”

My father found his voice. “Evian, what are you doing?”

I didn’t look at him.

I kept my eyes on the man in front of me.

“Wait for me,” I told him.

His brow lifted slightly.

But he nodded.

“I’ll wait.”

I turned and walked upstairs without another word.

I didn’t rush.

Let them stew.

Let them wonder.

When I came back down ten minutes later, I paused just before entering the living room again.

Voices.

Desperate.

“We are honored, of course,” my father was saying, strained but greedy. “But surely you would prefer someone… more suitable. Kate is—”

“I am not interested in Miss Katherine.”

Flat. Final.

My stepmother tried next. “Perhaps this is some misunderstanding? Young people these days can be impulsive—”

Silence.

He was giving them nothing.

No reassurance. No negotiation.

I stepped into the room.

He saw me immediately.

They didn’t.

I walked straight to him, slid my hand into his, and laced our fingers together.

“Shall we?” I said.

He didn’t hesitate.

We walked out together while my family stood frozen behind us.

The gates opened.

The limousine waited.

Inside the car, the world felt smaller.

Quieter.

The second the door shut, I turned toward him and grabbed his collar.

“You put on quite a show,” I murmured.

“And you didn’t?” he replied calmly.

I kissed him again.

This time it wasn’t for them.

It was electric. Heated. Controlled chaos.

His hand slid to my waist, then lower, firm and confident. He pulled me into his lap as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

I let him.

For a moment.

His mouth moved against mine slower now, less performance, more curiosity. His fingers traced the curve of my thigh, pushing the hem of my dress slightly higher.

Heat spiraled low in my stomach.

I pulled back just enough to breathe.

My phone vibrated in my clutch.

Perfect timing.

Without breaking eye contact, I retrieved it, opened my banking app, and made a transfer.

Five million.

I turned the screen toward him.

“Payment,” I said softly. “You performed exceptionally well back there.”

His eyes flicked to the notification.

Then back to me.

There was no anger.

No offense.

Only something dangerously amused.

He chuckled under his breath.

“You think that was an act?”

I tilted my head. “Wasn’t it?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he cupped my face and kissed me again.

Slower.

Deeper.

Like he was tasting something he intended to keep.

When he pulled away, his thumb brushed my lower lip.

“So,” he asked quietly, “was my service top-notch?”

I smiled faintly.

His hand slid along my thigh again, warmer this time, more deliberate.

I caught his wrist.

Held it.

Stopped him.

Our eyes locked.

“Good girls don’t do this,” I said lightly.

A lie.

But a useful one.

His gaze darkened briefly — not with frustration, but with restraint.

He withdrew his hand immediately.

“As you wish.”

No pressure.

No protest.

That composure unsettled me more than if he had pushed.

He adjusted his cuff calmly.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“The boutique.”

His brow lifted again.

“It’s time,” I said, glancing down at my phone, “to spend some money.”

A corner of his mouth curved.

“Mine or yours?”

I looked at him.

“Does it matter?”

He leaned back against the seat, watching me like I was the most interesting thing he’d encountered all week.

“Not at all.”

The car slowed as we approached the luxury shopping district.

I moved off his lap and smoothed my dress.

Before the car stopped completely, he reached for me once more — not to restrain, not to claim.

Just to tilt my chin slightly upward.

“Evian,” he said softly.

The way he said my name felt deliberate.

Measured.

“Be careful how you spend.”

I smiled.

“I always am.”

The door opened.

Flashes of afternoon sunlight spilled into the car.

I stepped out first.

Head high.

Shoulders back.

Behind me, he followed — not like a hired companion.

Not like a groom.

But like a man entirely comfortable letting the world believe whatever story I chose to tell.

And for the first time since my mother died, I wasn’t reacting.

I was directing.

But as we walked toward the boutique entrance, I could feel it.

The shift.

This wasn’t a game of purchase and performance anymore.

Evian The drive was quiet after Francis disappeared back into the house.I expected Cassian to ask more questions. About Francis. About what he wanted. About why he thought he could touch me like that.He didn’t.He just drove. The silence wasn’t awkward. It was controlled. Like he was giving me space to speak if I wanted to.“You pushed him hard,” I said finally.“He was out of line,” Cassian replied.“He’s always out of line.”“You let him stand too close.”I looked at him. “I didn’t let him.”“You didn’t stop him soon enough.”That irritated me. “I handled it.”“You stepped back. He stepped forward. That’s not handling it.”I folded my arms. “Why do you care?”His eyes stayed on the road. “I don’t like people touching what they haven’t earned.”The way he said it made something tighten in my chest. He didn’t sound jealous. He sounded firm.We drove another minute before he asked, “Was he always like that?”“Like what?”“Comfortable.”I looked out the window. “He used to be differe

I called him at noon.He picked up on the second ring.“I want to see you,” I said. There was a small pause on the line. “When?”“Today.”“Time and place.”I liked that about him. No unnecessary questions. No dramatic tone.“Five o’clock,” I said. “I’ll text you the location.”“Alright.”He hung up first.I stared at my phone for a moment before putting it down. I wasn’t nervous. I just needed air. I needed to step out of this house without someone demanding money or obedience from me.By four-thirty, I was dressed. Not overly dramatic. Just sharp enough to feel untouchable. A fitted black dress, low heels, minimal jewelry. My hair down. Clean. Controlled.I walked downstairs calmly and headed toward the car lot.The afternoon sun was still warm, but the house felt colder than usual. As I stepped into the open space near the cars, I heard footsteps behind me.“Evian.”I stopped.I didn’t have to turn around to know who it was.Francis.I turned slowly. He looked almost relieved to see

I woke up to a knock on my door.It wasn’t soft. It wasn’t polite. It was the kind of knock that assumed I would answer immediately.I opened my eyes slowly and stared at the ceiling for a second. My shoulder still hurt from yesterday. My body felt heavy, but my mind was clear. The knock came again.“I’m awake,” I said flatly.I got out of bed, wrapped my robe around me, and walked to the door. When I opened it, Kate was standing there, already dressed like she was about to leave the house. Her makeup was perfect. Her expression wasn’t.“What do you want?” I asked. She didn’t bother greeting me. “I need ten million.”I stared at her for a second. Then I laughed.“For what?”Her eyes narrowed instantly. “You don’t need to question me.”I leaned against the doorframe and folded my arms. “Then you don’t need my money.”Her jaw tightened. “Transfer it.”“No.”The word came out calm and simple.“You froze the accounts,” she said sharply. “The card was declined this morning. I have somethin

Evian By the time I stepped out of the car, the sky was completely dark.10:07 p.m.The mansion was blazing with light.Waiting.Of course. The gates shut behind me with a heavy metallic sound that echoed longer than it should have. The air felt colder than usual. Or maybe that was just anticipation.I walked in without rushing. The moment I pushed open the front door, I knew they had been sitting there for hours. My father stood near the fireplace, his walking stick planted firmly in front of him like a judge’s gavel. My stepmother sat upright on the sofa, arms crossed tightly. Kate leaned casually against the armrest, but her eyes were sharp and restless.“You dare to come home at this hour?” my father’s voice thundered across the room.I paused deliberately and looked up at the large clock hanging above the staircase.“It’s only ten.”“Only?” my stepmother repeated, as if I had said something outrageous.I slipped off my heels slowly and placed them neatly by the door. “What if I

The world narrowed to the heat of his skin under my palms, the solid weight of him beneath me. I didn’t know how we got to the room, and I didn’t care. The chaos in my head demanded a different, louder noise to drown it out.He gave it to me.His mouth was a brand, kissing away the memory of every cold, cruel touch I’d ever endured. He found places on my skin that made me arch and forget my own name. I was on top, taking charge, riding the wave of my own reckless decision. This was my choice. My destruction. My first real power in years.I shed my clothes like a second skin, helping him with his. When I leaned down and bit his nipple, a rough sound escaped his throat. It was a spark in the dark. He rolled us over, his body caging mine. His eyes, dark and intense, devoured me."I want you," It was all the permission he needed. The rest was a blur of sensation, a beautiful, punishing history written on my aching body. For a few hours, I wasn’t Evian the ghost. I was just a body c
