Chapter 9

Author: Artemisia Xavier
The knife was brought quickly, and seeing it in Sydney’s hand made Remi shiver.

“What… What are you doing?” Remi tried to scream, but her voice was hoarse and barely audible.

As she tried to pull away, strong hands pinned her shoulders, holding her firmly against the floor. Helpless, she watched as Sydney stepped closer, a cruel smile on her face.

“You want to know what I’m going to do? I’m going to destroy your face, of course. Let’s see whether you’ll have the nerve to look like me again!”

Sydney summoned every ounce of strength, bringing the blade down with all her might across Remi’s face!

“Ah!”

The moment the blade sliced through flesh to the bone, Remi could no longer hold back the scream. Yet the very next moment, Sydney's blade came down upon her again fifty-two times.

Remi's wails of agony rang out, but no one showed a moment's mercy. Remi could distinctly hear the blade slicing through her flesh. She could feel the trail of blood trickling down her cheeks. She could see the hideous, terrifying grins upon their faces… The air thickened with the stench of blood. Her entire face had long since become a bloody, mangled mess, her body convulsing uncontrollably.

Still unsatisfied, Sydney sent her best friend to the kitchen to fill a bucket of ice-cold water, then pressed Remi's blood-soaked, mangled face into it. Remi instantly erupted in a shrill, piercing scream. The sound felt like an invisible hand, clutching at her heart with deadly force. It was excruciatingly painful.

Despite that, Sydney cackled wildly. Her face twisted with madness as she pulled out her phone, snapping photo after photo.

“Hahahaha! Look at you now! You're nothing but disgusting. With your face ruined, I'll be damned if you dare try to seduce James again.”

Remi opened her mouth, yet no words came out. She lay in a pool of blood, barely able to move, her breath faint and dying.

Sydney’s friends hovered nearby, close enough to hear Remi say, “You… You will regret this.”

Everyone felt a chill run down their spines. “Sydney, have we taken this a little too far? Mr. Hudson won't hold it against us, will he?”

Sydney snickered, arms crossed as she took it all in, utterly unconcerned. “Hold it against me? James adores me so much. How could he possibly blame me over such a trifling matter? Besides, I'm carrying his child. That's practically a get-out-of-jail-free card. Have you forgotten how much he used to care about me?”

Her friends nodded in agreement, their worries instantly dispelled.

Sydney kicked Remi, who lay sprawled on the floor like a dead dog. “Mark my words. Not just anyone can capture James’s heart. Give up that delusion of climbing the social ladder. Since you're so desperate for male attention, I'll grant you a few men.”

With that, Sydney summoned several homeless men by phone.

Surveying the ragged figures with yellowed teeth and foul breath, Sydney smiled smugly before pointing at the blood-soaked woman sprawled on the ground.

“She's yours. Though her face is beyond recognition, her figure remains passable. Do as you please, but just don't kill her.”

Having wandered the streets for years without a woman's touch, the homeless men showed no disdain for Remi. Drool dripping, they lunged at her, instantly tearing her skirt to shreds. Gazing upon her smooth body, their eyes glowed like ravenous wolves. Several scrambled to grope her, their tongues licking her skin incessantly.

Remi struggled feebly, lying limp on the ground like a dead fish. Their hands grew bolder, gradually creeping lower. Through the haze, she thought she was back at that summer long ago, when she had scraped her knees raw from climbing a wall to pick flowers. Just a trickle of blood had made the eyes of the one who loved her turn crimson.

The young man had tended to her wounds, blowing gently on them as he worked. “Sweetheart, from now on, don't let yourself get hurt. Your pain hurts me more than it hurts you.”

Tears trickled down her cheeks, mingling with the blood from her gruesome wounds before vanishing into the floorboards.

‘James, is this what you wanted?’ Remi thought.

Her clothes were torn to shreds, every inch of her body kissed by those homeless men. Just as they lowered their trousers to take her… Her lungs spasmed violently, choking off her breath. In utter despair, she bit down on her tongue, ready to end it.

At that very instant, the gate burst open with a violent kick.

“What do you guys think you’re doing?”

Ever since that reckless night, Sydney had been under the protection of Katie. He never once had the chance to approach her, let alone harm the child in her womb. The pain of it crushed him, and he had locked himself away in the villa, drowning in alcohol, muttering her name in a drunken haze, clinging to bottles as if they were lifelines.Perhaps even fate found his self-destruction repulsive. One night, after drinking himself into oblivion, he tumbled down the stairs, his face swelling until he could barely speak. It was only then that he finally fell silent. That was until Sydney had another premature labor and was rushed to the hospital by Katie. As the father’s signature was required, he was summoned along. However, to prevent any further harm, Katie stayed with her in the delivery room, leaving him to wait alone outside.Looking at the bright red letters on the delivery room door, he could not help but imagine what could have been. If none of that night’s chaos had happened, w

Soon, the first item up for auction was unveiled. The moment it appeared, gasps of awe echoed throughout the room. The Sloan family’s wealth was largely built on jewelry. Over generations, their collection of rare gems and treasures had grown vast, each piece worth a fortune. The first item was no exception. It was a set of green emerald jewelry, starting at three million dollars, with increments of five hundred thousand fdollars for each new bid.As soon as the gavel fell, guests eagerly raised their paddles. The auction proceeded smoothly, and before long, it was time for the final, centerpiece item. The auctioneer gestured to her, and Remi gracefully lifted her dress and walked toward the stage. Taking the microphone from the auctioneer, she introduced the final piece.“This centerpiece is the very first design I created when I began working with jewelry. I poured most of my heart into it, so it holds great personal significance. The proceeds from this piece will go toward esta

The scandalous news quickly reached Elias, and he could not wait to make a long-distance call. He had someone he wanted to share this “good news” with.In a grand estate somewhere in the United Everest, a woman with delicate features was tending to the roses in her garden. Sunlight streamed over her as she watered them from a hose. The refraction of the sun through the clear water created tiny rainbows that lifted the spirits of anyone who saw them. Not far away, her phone rang on the table, its melodic ringtone cutting through the morning calm. The woman handed the hose to a nearby servant, dried her hands with a handkerchief offered by another, and finally walked over to answer the call. The moment she picked up, Elias’s excited voice came through. “Great news, Remi!”Reclining leisurely in a rocking chair, Remi smiled. “What’s the good news this time, Elias?”Since her parents had brought her to the United Everest a year ago for treatment, she had settled there permanently. She

Katie found herself speechless as she watched the scene unfold. She immediately pulled Sydney away from James’s hold.“What are you two doing?” she demanded.James looked at his mother coldly, all traces of patience gone. “Mom, this is not your place to interfere.”However, Katie slapped him hard across the back. “If I don’t interfere, you’d end up killing my grandson’s mother, your wife!”James’s eyelid twitched violently. A sense of foreboding crawled up his spine. “Mom, what do you mean by that?”Carefully, Katie escorted Sydney back into the room before turning to face her son with a calculating look in her eyes.Ever since the Hudson family went bankrupt and James’s father went to prison, Katie had realized just how few people remained in their family. Even though she had a grandson now, the house felt empty, and that reminded her of Sydney. Sydney had been willing to bear a child for them for a million dollars, and now Katie was ready to spend a little money she had secretl

James’s face darkened instantly. “Say that again. What do you mean, the company?”His assistant looked back at him cautiously. “T-The company has gone bankrupt…”James grabbed the assistant by the collar. “You're talking nonsense!”The assistant trembled, holding out his phone. James snatched it and scanned the screen at lightning speed. After James forced Henry’s mistress to terminate her pregnancy, she harbored a deep grudge. In retaliation, she filed a report accusing Henry of embezzling company funds. The special task force immediately dispatched investigators to the company. There, they discovered that Henry had lost billions to gambling and misappropriated seventy-three million from the company’s funds. With the company’s cash flow collapsed, it could not meet its payment obligations, and in the end, the company went bankrupt. As the embezzled amount was massive and unrecovered, Henry faced more than ten years or possibly life in prison. Once the facts were confirmed, they

It turned out that after Henry returned to the company, he and Katie had gotten into yet another violent fight. At the same time, a few clients and shareholders were visiting the office. The moment the door opened, they were met with the shocking scene. Even worse, one of the major shareholders was injured and had to be hospitalized. The clients immediately shook their heads and left. Several shareholders, furious beyond measure, announced on the spot that they were withdrawing their investments. The company instantly descended into chaos. With the withdrawal of funds and the departure of clients, cash flow dried up. Materials could not be delivered to construction sites on time, causing projects to stall. When the main contractor refused to release the final payments, the workers began rioting, and some even threatened to go up onto the rooftop. James was overwhelmed, running around like a man on fire.Watching the series of disasters unfold at Hudson Corporation, Elias sipped his
