CHRISTIAN

~•~

Melanie and I sat across from each other, just staring.

Well, she was glaring but same difference.

I had expected Melanie to show up today. Besides, she didn’t seem like the kind of woman to recklessly dishonor a contract. However, she still felt betrayed for reasons best known to her so she thought the best course of action was coming into my office at the start of the work day and glaring at me.

Did she think I’d let her go if she glared hard enough?

If there was a knock on the

CHRISTIAN~•~I didn’t know what to say to that. Logically, it made sense. Our argument wasn’t taking us anywhere. If anything, it was just making things worse. However, I also didn’t want her to leave. She could stay in the guest room like she did the other day. We didn’t have to sleep in the same bed. We could just exist under the same roof but she had already packed her things before I even arrived as if she knew this conversation wouldn’t lead us anywhere. As she turned around to leave, I wanted to say something, anything. I wanted to tell her to stay. I wanted to apologize for not hearing her side. I wanted to make sure she wasn’t angry as she left. She had assured me we weren’t breaking up but I also wasn’t sure how we’d act around each other if we ran into each other at work during this time. That led to the question that eventually slipped past my lips. “Are you still going to work tomorrow?”Melanie paused just a few feet away from the foyer and turned around to look at me. “

MELANIE~•~The rest of the workday passed by too slowly.Or maybe it was because I spent the whole day in a foul mood. I tried to improve my mood, but I couldn’t help it because anytime I came across a colleague, they avoided me.When I went to get coffee, the person at the machine gave way for me instantly. I lost my appetite immediately and returned to my office.I just couldn’t stand it.I doubted I was productive at all, with how much I focused on my argument with Christian instead of work. That was why I left as soon as the clock struck five in the evening.I drove back to his apartment alone because I couldn’t stand the building a minute longer. I sat at his kitchen island with a cup of tea that I didn’t drink because I spent the time going over every word I’d said, and the more I replayed it, the angrier I got, and the less sure I was about who I was angry with. When I didn’t have anything to do, I packed my things back into my overnight bag, waiting for him to return home. H

MELANIE~•~“Can you stay for another week?”I looked over at Christian who was watching me get dressed for work from the doorway. “I haven’t seen the inside of my apartment in almost a week.”“You can always go see it and come back, if that’s the issue.”I laughed, shaking my head. “Are you slowly trying to make me move into your place?”He shrugged, not confirming or denying. “It’s just one week though.”I looked around his closet. A few of my clothes were already hung next to his. Some of his drawers contained my belongings. His place was very comfortable and he had an extra room if we ever needed space from each other, but I also didn’t want to start living together too quickly, but then I looked back at him and saw that he was still waiting for a response. I sighed. “Fine. One week.”Christian smiled, then crossed the room and kissed me briefly. “See you at work, Ms. Juarez.”He left after that and I drove to work with a smile I couldn’t wipe off my face.It was a Monday. I was s

MELANIE~•~“But I don’t have anything to wear.”“We can always visit a department store.”“My hair desperately needs a new cut.”“Good thing I mentioned it early. We have time to stop by the hairdresser too.”I placed my hands on my waist, staring at Christian. “Do we really need to go out today?”“You don’t want to?”Considering I was giving excuses, I thought that was obvious. “I don’t want to dress up.”“What would you rather do?”“Netflix and chill?”Christian raised an eyebrow. “Netflix and chill.” He repeated in a dry tone.“Yes.”“Do you know what that means?”“I’m twenty-seven, Christian. I know what it means.” I could feel my cheeks warming, but I held his gaze steadily. “I also know what it means literally. We pick something, we sit on your couch, and we don’t leave this apartment.”“I’m sure you didn’t mean that literally.”“I—“He suddenly moved closer on the couch so that his face was very close to mine. “But if that’s what you want,” his voice lowered as his eyes flicke

CHRISTIAN~•~Melanie and I didn’t speak all night. We ate our dinner at different times and I didn’t see her for the rest of the evening until it was time for bed and it wasn’t a lack of trying on my part.Even when I went to bed, she only said a curt goodnight and faced the other way.It bothered me. I tried to think if we’d ever argued and realized it was the first time. I wasn’t sure how to handle it so I didn’t bother her and went to sleep as well.I woke up at five, which was usual. What was unusual, at least, for the past few days, was that Melanie’s side of the bed was empty. The bed was cold on her side, which meant she’d been gone for a while now. I sat up instantly, wondering if she went home.I didn’t hesitate to get out of the bed, but I barely made it towards the stairs when I heard sounds coming from the guest bedroom, the same room she’d stayed in the first night I brought her to my place while drunk.I walked toward the door of the guest bedroom and listened for sound

MELANIE~•~My palm was still stinging when I reached Christian’s building.I sat in the car for a minute with the engine off, flexing my fingers. I had slapped Vivian in front of a café full of people and poured a latte over her head. She had been too shocked to do anything but gape at me as I walked out.I should have felt ashamed, but I didn’t. Instead, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Vivian had been a thorn in my ass for the longest time. Whenever Patrick and I had problems, she liked to fan the flames and imply silly things about me, making every argument worse than they should have been.Even now that I was no longer in her life, she just couldn’t leave me alone. I didn’t know why she was meeting up with Lane. I didn’t know how they managed to link up in the first place.Christian was waiting in the living room when I entered. His head snapped up at my arrival. “Where’d you go?” He asked, standing up to meet me. “I texted you back but never got a response
