ANMELDENChapter 4
“Are you going to forgive your husband, my wife?”
The question slipped so smoothly from Darren’s lips, spoken in a voice filled with the remorse and tenderness of a husband afraid of losing his wife.
Huh? Lyonna froze even more. Her mind seemed to stop functioning. She stared at the man before her with wide eyes, trying to find a crack in the falsehood hidden behind those sharp eyes. Darren was smiling—a sweet smile that he had rarely, if ever, shown Lyonna during their two years of marriage. The smile was so captivating that it softened the sharp lines of his jaw, making Lyonna briefly wonder whether this scene was real or merely a terrible hallucination caused by being exhausted from hoping for too long.
Before Lyonna could catch her breath, Darren stepped slightly closer. He lowered his head and planted a warm kiss on Lyonna’s forehead. The touch was so real that Darren’s woody-and-mint perfume filled the woman’s senses. After kissing her forehead, Darren straightened up and smiled sweetly at his wife once again, as though they were newlyweds drunk on love.
Before Lyonna could process her shock, Darren’s warm fingers slipped into hers, gripping her hand tightly and possessively. The man raised their intertwined hands in front of the invited guests, who had been standing frozen as they watched the dramatic scene.
With a calm yet authoritative voice, Darren spoke loudly enough for everyone in the suddenly silent ballroom to hear.
“I know that over the past two years, I have been too busy handling the company’s business expansion, leaving me with little free time to accompany her,” Darren said with such conviction, as though he were the most devoted husband in the world. “But that doesn’t mean I have been neglecting her. You all need to understand that the happiness and harmony of our marriage do not always have to be displayed on social media or flaunted at every opportunity, right?”
The whispers that had filled the room suddenly disappeared. The guests, especially the socialites and business associates who had mocked Lyonna earlier, swallowed hard. They never expected the sole heir of the Graham family, known for being cold and arrogant, to defend his wife in public.
Meanwhile, deep inside, Lyonna was caught in an intense inner battle. Her common sense screamed that all of this was nothing but nonsense—a cheap theatrical performance to save the Graham family’s company reputation and pride from a scandal, and perhaps to boost Graham Group’s stock price. She knew exactly how much Darren hated her.
Yet, on the other hand, Lyonna’s mental defenses simply collapsed. For years, she had lived deprived of affection, ignored by her parents, and trampled on by her own husband. She was desperately thirsty for validation. She was starving for recognition. And tonight, even though she knew all this tenderness was fake, she chose not to care. Who cared whether it was acting or not? What mattered was that, just for tonight, Darren was playing his role perfectly, standing by her side and erasing all the shame she had felt only minutes ago.
The warmth of Darren’s hand made tears of emotion almost spill from the corners of Lyonna’s eyes again, but this time she held them back tightly. She wanted to enjoy this moment, at least for tonight.
Seeing Darren defend her so fiercely, the spoiled, affectionate side that had been buried deep within Lyonna suddenly emerged. She looked up at her husband with tearful eyes, making them appear as sweet as possible, then tightened her grip around Darren’s arm.
“My husband...” Lyonna called out in a deliberately softened voice, sounding incredibly affectionate. She raised her free right hand and pointed toward a group of people—several business associates and socialite wives—who had been standing in the corner of the room earlier, mocking her figure. “You know... they insulted me earlier...”
For a moment, a slight twitch appeared at the corner of Darren’s eye, as though the man was surprised by his wife’s sudden change in attitude and her unexpectedly spoiled behavior, complaining like a little child. However, Darren was a skilled actor who quickly took control of the situation. His gaze immediately followed the direction of Lyonna’s finger, staring sharply at the group of people she had pointed out.
Instantly, the faces of the socialites and businessmen she had pointed at turned deathly pale. Their bodies trembled in fear as they faced the deadly gaze of the future CEO of the city’s largest conglomerate.
Without releasing his intertwined hand with Lyonna’s, Darren raised his left hand and gave a small gesture to his personal assistant, who stood alert near the main entrance.
“Beni!” Darren called in a cold voice that gripped the air.
The neatly dressed man called Beni immediately hurried toward his boss, covered in a cold sweat. “Yes, Young Master?”
Darren glanced at Beni briefly, then looked back toward the group of people who had offended his wife before turning his gaze back to his assistant, his expression absolute and utterly intolerant.
“Effective immediately, terminate all business partnerships, contracts, and logistics supply agreements between our company and their families,” Darren ordered without the slightest hesitation, his voice loud and clear enough for the entire room to hear. “Put their companies on Graham Group’s permanent blacklist. I don’t want to see a single one of their companies survive in this city after they dared to insult my wife.”
Thump.
Chapter 10 “Darren,” Viona said softly, stepping forward through the doorway without waiting to be invited. Her hand quickly reached out, wrapping around Darren’s arm as he still stood stiffly on the final step, pulling him closer with a movement that seemed so familiar, as though the two years of separation between them had never happened. “You said there would be important guests tonight. So I came to accompany you.” Darren did not answer immediately. His eyes were still fixed on Lyonna’s face as she stood stiffly beside him, his chest still pounding from the incident on the stairs earlier, leaving him needing a fraction of a second to process the situation that had suddenly become even more complicated. “You and her are already divorced, aren’t you?” Viona continued, her voice sweet yet sharp to Lyonna’s ears, her eyes briefly glancing toward the woman standing on Darren’s other side as though assessing something beneath
Chapter 9 Before he could take another step, Lyonna grabbed Darren’s arm, causing her husband to stop on the first step of the staircase. “Wait,” she said hurriedly. “Your tie is crooked, and your suit is still wrinkled here.” Darren did not have time to reply. Lyonna was already standing in front of him, her hand reaching up to the tie knot that had indeed been slightly loose since earlier, fixing it with quick yet meticulous movements. The distance between them was incredibly small, barely a foot, close enough for Darren to faintly catch the scent of vanilla perfume wafting from the skin of Lyonna’s neck. Lyonna’s fingers moved nimbly as she pulled the tie knot into place, while her own breath, warm and steady, softly brushed just beneath Darren’s chin whenever she tilted her head up slightly to make sure everything looked neat. Darren unconsciously held his breath, his body tensing rigidly, while the
Chapter 8At four in the afternoon, the guest room at the end of the corridor had already been transformed into a sea of fabric color samples, rows of cosmetic boxes covering the vanity, and three assistants busily moving back and forth with their respective tools in hand. Lyonna sat upright in front of the large gold-framed mirror, her eyes closed as Madame Ivanka’s skilled fingers—the makeup artist whose name often appeared in the capital’s fashion magazines—worked deftly around her eyelids.“You have to trust me, Miss,” Madame Ivanka said as she gently tapped the brush against Lyonna’s cheek. “Tonight, everyone in that room will forget who is supposed to be the center of attention between you and the guests from Singapore.”Lyonna smiled faintly, her eyes still closed. “I just don’t want to become a laughingstock, Madame. Just make me look presentable.”“Presentable?” Madame Ivanka scoffed softly, setting down her brush for a moment. “You’re going to look extraordinary. Trust my ha
The morning sunlight softly reflected off the marble floor of the family room as Darren stood near the large window, his phone pressed to his right ear. His voice was low and firm as he discussed the third-quarter projection figures with someone on the other end of the call—his client from Singapore, who would be arriving that evening."I sent the revised contract last night," Darren said, his tone professional and unwavering. "You can check your email this morning. If there's anything that needs to be discussed further, we can—"His sentence was abruptly cut off when a pair of arms wrapped tightly around his waist from behind. The soft scent of lavender soap wafted from Lyonna's hair as it brushed against his back. Darren froze for a moment, his body tensing, while the client's voice on the other end of the phone continued rambling without pause, completely unaware of what had just happened in the family room.Darren turned around, ready to voice a protest with the sharp look he usua
The first morning of the second day of those one hundred days arrived with sunlight filtering through the gaps in the linen curtains of the master bedroom. Lyonna slowly opened her eyes, momentarily confused by the high ceiling adorned with crystal chandeliers that had not belonged to her for the past two years. All this time, she had slept in the guest room at the end of the corridor, far from the master bedroom, which had always been empty because Darren more often spent his nights at the apartment near his office. She got up, reached for her phone on the nightstand, and found a short message from Darren sent at five in the morning.[I'm waiting for you in the dining room. We're going to discuss the rules of your ridiculous agreement, so hurry up.]Lyonna snorted softly, reading the sentence twice before putting her phone back down. She dragged herself toward the bathroom, letting warm water run over her shoulders while arranging the sentences she would throw at him later. Last nigh
Chapter 5The atmosphere inside the black Rolls-Royce was utterly silent after the doors closed tightly, shutting out the world outside. The AC hummed softly, blowing cool air that contrasted sharply with the tension that suddenly rose between the passengers in the back seat.As the car drove away from the luxury hotel where the dinner had been held, Darren turned his head sharply. He glared at the woman beside him, his eyes blazing with anger that he had been suppressing all this time.“Are you satisfied now, Lyonna?” Darren hissed sharply, his voice almost a whisper but filled with piercing emphasis.Lyonna, still wearing her elegant ivory gown, slowly turned toward him. Instead of feeling frightened or intimidated, the corners of her lips lifted into a sweet yet mysterious smile. She did not immediately respond with harsh words. Instead, Lyonna deliberately shifted closer until the scent of her expensive perfume blended perfectly with her husband’s natural scent. With a deliberate,
