Chapter 4

The next day, East Shipping Corporation hosted a small welcome-back dinner for Joe.

Mary called me in the morning and insisted that I attend.

“If you don’t go, what will the others think of Joe?”

I asked, “Isn’t he taking Mia with him?”

Mary sounded impatient.

“Mia’s a business partner. Of course, she’ll be attending too. Don’t be petty.”

I attended the dinner.

I wore a long black dress, but I did not wear my wedding ring.

The dinner was held at a hotel near the jetty.

When I went into the private room, Mia was seated on Joe’s left.

She was wearing a white dress, and she had the wave necklace around her neck.

She was also wearing the earrings from the same set.

Mary saw me and waved at me.

“Aria, quick, come over! You should sit there. It’s easier for you to serve the dishes.”

Joe did not say anything.

Mia looked up and chuckled.

“Mrs. Anderson, don’t misunderstand this. I’m wearing this set for a photoshoot today. Joe said I can keep it for a while.”

Someone cheered.

“Captain Anderson has great taste! The wave design really suits Ms. Smith.”

“He’s a captain. Of course, only those who know the sea well will be able to understand him.”

“Mrs. Anderson, don’t be jealous. Ms. Smith is one of us.”

Joe raised a glass.

“Enough. Stop with your nonsense.”

Even though he said it was nonsense, he was smiling.

I was seated near the entrance. The waiter placed the cold cuts before me.

I had gastritis, so I could not eat raw cured meat.

Joe knew that.

However, he was serving Mia warm food.

Mia walked toward me with a glass of wine.

“Mrs. Anderson, let’s have a toast. Joe always told me how hard you’ve worked to take care of his parents. I’m very impressed.”

I stared at her necklace.

“What else did he say?”

Mia’s eyes glinted.

“He said that you’re a thoughtful person, but you never truly understood the sea in his heart.”

Everyone fell silent. Someone tried to lighten the mood by joking around.

“It’s normal, after all. Ship crews rarely get to see their families. You just have to be understanding toward each other.”

Mary lowered her voice and said, “Drink it. Don’t embarrass us.”

Joe stared at me.

“Aria, we can discuss these things in private. Don’t embarrass us in front of everyone.”

I took the glass but did not drink it.

I poured the wine into the flower pot next to me.

Mia’s face changed.

Mary stood up abruptly.

“Aria!”

Joe shot to his feet and tried to grab me.

At the same time, Helen Scott, the wife of the vice captain, Luke Henson, walked in.

Her face was flushed from drinking too much. She was holding a piece of crumpled paper.

She pressed the paper into my palm and said loudly, “Not only did he send her jewelry, but the delivery authorization document also has your name on it. I don’t remember you signing it.”

Joe’s face paled.

He reached over to snatch the paper.

I took a step back and straightened the crumpled paper.

In the very bottom signature box, my full name was written in full.

[Aria Reid.]

It was not my handwriting.
