Chapter 3

Author: Seven Ponds
Theodore invited me to meet him at a restaurant at seven on Saturday night.

That was enough to shock the entire family, then they became worried.

Theodore held enormous influence and power in Harbor City, and his temper was even harder to predict. Someone had once said the wrong thing in front of him and Theodore had bankrupted him for it.

As for me, I was so oblivious that even if someone held a knife to my throat, I would still grin and say, "That knife looks so real!"

My father, Kenny, was so worried he paced in circles.

My mother, Caroline, was so anxious she cried.

My older brother, Tommy, kept sighing too.

Only Nora covered her mouth smugly. She thought Theodore had figured out what had happened and wanted to deal with me.

I was completely confused. "I'm just going to an audition. You should be happy for me."

Afraid that the family would stop me, Nora quickly added, "Exactly, Dad, Mom, Tommy. Rebecca really is going to an audition. Maybe if Mr. Jensen is pleased, he'll even reward her with something nice. Besides, he has already sent an invitation. We can't possibly refuse, right?"

Of course, they could not reject the man who ruled Harbor City from behind the scenes. Although the Lane Family's main sphere of influence was outside of the island Harbor City was in. However, they also had plenty of business in Harbor City.

If they wanted their business to keep developing steadily, they could not afford to cross Theodore.

After thinking it over again and again, the family could only accept it helplessly.

They held my hand and reminded me repeatedly. "Rebecca, you have to watch what you say and do."

I nodded. To make sure the audition went well, I would definitely perform properly.

Before I went out on Saturday, Nora brought me to a corner.

She secretly stuffed a small switchblade into my hand.

Then she said mysteriously, "This is a prop I prepared just for you. I heard their movie is an action movie. When you audition, take this knife out, and he'll definitely see you in a whole new light!"

I held her hand gratefully. "Thank you for thinking this far ahead for me. I'll make good use of it!"

Nora burst out laughing as she watched me leave. "What an idiot! Pulling a knife in front of Theodore? Time to die, idiot."

The meeting was at seven, but I arrived at the private room ten minutes early. I had not expected Theodore to arrive even earlier as he was already sitting inside.

As soon as I walked in, he told me to sit and ask what I wanted to eat. I said seriously, "I can eat anything, but when does our audition start?"

He turned his eyes from the menu in his hand to my face. After confirming that I was serious and not joking, he raised an eyebrow in interest. After all, this was his first time meeting someone as slow and oblivious as me.

With that thought in mind, he put down the menu and said, "Now, then."

I looked around. The men playing the men-in-black bodyguards from the dark room were not there.

Now, only Theodore and I were in the private room. Which meant he wanted me to roleplay with him. There was no script either, so he must want me to improvise.

Thinking of how Nora had said this movie was an action movie, I pulled the switchblade out of my pants pocket and pointed the tip at Theodore.

My gaze darkened, and my whole presence suddenly turned cold as I sneered. "Today is the day you die!"

Theodore's amused expression suddenly darkened.

His hand had already moved on instinct toward the gun hidden by his thigh. But before he could draw the gun, the private room door was kicked open.

A figure rushed in, the gun in his hand aimed straight at Theodore's head. "Theodore! Today is the day you die!"

I froze.

Huh?

The same line?

Damn it! Was he trying to steal my spotlight?

Did he not see that my audition was not over yet?

Theodore's heart sank, and hostility surged inside him.

When it rained, it poured.

He could not help suspecting that I was with that man.

His hand had already touched the grip of his gun.

He was about to send us both off to Hell one by one before he saw me rush at the man with incredible speed. Before the man could react, I had already knocked him to the floor. I kicked the gun away, before pinning him to the ground, and pressed the switchblade against his neck. "Tell me! Who sent you?"

Kenny, Caroline, and Tommy looked at Nora in disbelief. "Nora, it really was you..."At the same time, Theodore appeared on the big screen. He entered the room I was in and patted my head in relief. "I thought you were really going to fall for her trick. Looks like you're not that stupid after all."I said confidently, "I'm a little slow and can be a bit oblivious, but I'm not stupid."He smiled. "So, you do know you're oblivious, huh?"When he turned around, all the gentleness vanished from his face. He looked coldly into the hidden camera and said, "Nora Lane, Susan Summers, since you dared to lay a hand on my fiancee, I believe you are ready to become an enemy of my family and me."Bodyguards wearing full black surged out and surrounded the two of them.Nora's face turned pale and she looked to my family for help. They turned away in disappointment, not wanting to look at her again. Susan's legs gave out as she collapsed to the floor. She had only wanted to drive me away becau

On the day of Susan's birthday party, I finally saw my family again after a long time. After Kenny, Caroline, and Tommy confirmed that I had fully recovered, they finally stopped worrying about me. For some reason, Theodore had not allowed them to visit me at his estate. During this time, they were barely able to eat or sleep properly.Nora stood behind them, staring at me the moment she saw me. After everyone else finished greeting me, she was about to leave.I suddenly called out to her. "Nora."She paused and looked at me uncertainly.I walked up, patted her shoulder, and said, "I didn't expect you to have been trying to hurt me all along."She had not expected me to expose her so directly, and her mind started racing. After thinking of something, she quickly put on a guilty expression. "Rebecca, I'm sorry. I've done a lot of thinking lately. I admit I was jealous of you, but I know what I did put me in the wrong now. Can we still be sisters?"To keep me safe, Theodore had se

After that, Susan said she had not seen Theodore for a long time, then actually stayed at his estate. After I recovered, I could finally leave the infirmary and move into a proper bedroom.Susan seemed very eager to build a bond with me.Whenever she had some free time, she would come to hang around me.On the first day, she brought a photo album and flipped through it in front of me. "Rebecca, look. These are all photos of Theodore and me when we were little. We've known each other since we were in diapers. Our parents even said we should get married when we grow up."I nodded and asked sincerely, "Really? Then why didn't you get married?"I swore I had no hidden meaning when I asked. She had brought it up, so I naturally asked. Who knew Susan's expression would darken right then and there? "You… How could you have mocked me?! Do you think you're so extraordinary just because you get to marry Theodore?"After saying that, she ran off crying.I was completely confused.I was n

After listening to my long speech, Theodore fell silent for the longest time.He might have looked calm on the surface, but he was not that calm inside at all. He knew I was oblivious, but he had not expected me to be this oblivious. He suddenly wondered if I would still think it was a performance if he shot someone in the head right in front of me.Theodore took a deep breath and used every bit of patience he had to lay out the truth without sympathy. "First, everything that happened in that room that day was real. It wasn't a performance."In any case, I was already engaged to him. It was time to tell me the truth. "At the time, I was dealing with a traitor. That man wasn't saying a line when he asked you for help. He was really begging for help. What you touched wasn't fake blood either. It was real blood."My eyes slowly widened, but Theodore continued. "When Nora pushed you in, I was planning to deal with you too because that involved family secrets. Outsiders couldn't be all

Theodore looked at the three people in front of him with some surprise. "I heard Rebecca went missing as a child and only recently came back to your family. I thought you would care more about Nora."The three of them exchanged glances and said, "Of course we care about Nora too. Both girls are family. How could we not care? It's just... We didn't expect Nora to do something like that at today's banquet."Theodore reminded them, "Nora might have been behind this..."Tommy interrupted him. "It couldn't have been Nora! She's been innocent and kind since she was little. It absolutely couldn't be her! She only said those things at the banquet because she was afraid you would really drink the poison. Theodore, she was doing it for your sake too!"Kenny and Caroline nodded as well. "Those two girls usually get along so well. Why would Nora frame Rebecca?"Theodore glanced at my family. 'It seems Rebecca was not the only oblivious one in the family,' he thought to himself.Theodore had

The entire banquet hall instantly descended into chaos.Just a moment ago, I had been accused of trying to poison Theodore. But now, I was the victim.Fortunately, there was a professional medical team working in the estate and I was instantly rushed to the infirmary.Nora watched everything unfold, her body going stiff with fear. True, she had watched me pour in the poison with her own eyes and then left. That was because her only goal had been to make sure the security camera captured me poisoning the wine. She had not expected me to drink the poisoned wine out of gluttony right after she left. The person who had poisoned the drink had taken a sip of the poison herself. Would that not make her accusation suspicious, too?The moment she thought about what she might have to face, her legs went weak. She looked around, trying to slip away in the chaos. But as soon as she turned, a bodyguard grabbed her by the collar and hurled her in front of Theodore. His expression was as dark
