Chapter 3

Autor: Echo
"Still throwing a fit?"

The next afternoon, Gideon pushed open my bedroom door.

I was taking down a photo of the two of us from the wall and tossing it into a cardboard box.

He walked over and dropped a glittering diamond necklace on my vanity.

"I was a little hot-headed last night. Take this. Wear it at the wedding."

I glanced at the necklace and swept it into a drawer.

I'd throw it in the trash after he left. I didn't need his late-game apologies.

Gideon's eyes fell on my dark brown hair.

He suddenly smiled and reached out to touch it, but I turned my head, dodging his hand.

"Actually, the dark color suits you better," he said, pulling his hand back and leaning casually against the desk. "My mother always said your old blonde hair was too flashy. This color... it's more understated. More fitting for our world."

I stopped packing the box.

"So, you knew Ryn was going to throw paint on me and ruin my dress, didn't you?"

Gideon froze for a second, then gave me a placating smile. "I just saw her mixing the paint... but Briony, a Mafia family doesn't need a delicate flower. I thought a little shock would help toughen you up."

My breath caught in my throat. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Why didn't you stop her?" I stared into his eyes. "You knew I waited six months for that couture gown! It was one-of-a-kind. It's ruined, and it can't be replaced!"

"It's just a dress. I can get you a new one," Gideon said with a shrug. "I thought this would be more exciting. Briony, you're always so calm. I prefer it when you lose control."

So, me crying in anger, shaking in fear, being laughed at by everyone...

To him, it was just interesting.

"Gideon!" Ryn's voice came from the doorway.

She sauntered in, saw the empty jewelry box on the vanity, and pouted. "You got her another gift? You didn't even get me something this expensive when I helped you delete her investment data!"

The room went dead silent.

Gideon's face changed instantly. "Ryn! Shut up!" he hissed.

But it was too late.

I stood frozen, the blood draining from my body.

Last winter. The family's core fund—the one I managed. Key data had mysteriously vanished overnight.

The family lost nearly ten million dollars.

For a week, I couldn't sleep. I was so consumed with guilt I was losing my hair in clumps.

And what did Gideon do back then?

He stood outside my door every day, comforting me, holding me, telling me he'd help me carry the burden, that he had my back.

It turned out he was the one who handed them the knife.

"You told Ryn to do it?" My voice was a whisper.

Gideon looked away, yanking at his tie in frustration. "I just mentioned it offhand. How was I supposed to know she'd actually do it? Besides, didn't I cover the loss for you?"

"You covered it?" I laughed, a bitter, broken sound. "You owed me that!"

"Briony!" Gideon snapped, his embarrassment turning to anger. "Are you really going to dredge up this old grudge? You're far too vindictive!"

I looked at the face I had loved for seven years.

Once, when Ryn had bullied me under the guise of a "joke," he would hold me tight and whisper, "I'm here now. I swear I'll never let you be treated like this again."

Now, he'd broken that promise.

He had become one of them.

"I'm done bringing it up," I said with a smile.

There was no point in settling scores with someone who would soon be dead to me.

Gideon visibly relaxed.

He reached out to hug me.

"That's more like it."

"Don't worry, I promise it will never happen again."

At three in the afternoon, the wedding planner knocked on my door.

"Miss Briony, here is the final schedule for tomorrow's wedding. Please confirm."

I took the sheet, glanced at it, and signed my name.

"No changes," I said, handing it back.

I wasn't going to cancel the wedding.

Tomorrow, all the heads of New York's underworld would be gathered in one place.

I would give them the wedding of the century—with a missing bride. A gift, from me to my dear family and my wonderful fiancé.

Just like all the "gifts" Ryn had given me over the years.

A year later, it was Halloween again.I stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at my reflection. The dark brown hair I'd been forced to get to cover the paint had grown out. My natural blonde had returned, and I'd had it styled in loose, confident waves.I was wearing a black velvet gown that clung to my curves, its embedded crystals glittering under the chandelier. No one would ever dare throw paint on this dress. My life was unrecognizable from a year ago.In Zurich, the global center of capital, I moved with ease between Wall Street and the European markets, guided by my sharp instincts and ruthless decisiveness. At the start of the year, I led the successful acquisition of two aggressive hedge funds, not only bringing in billions in profit for my firm but also making me the youngest senior partner in its history. With my own money, I bought a private estate in the Alps, with a view overlooking the magnificent snow-capped mountains. My connection to the Rossi family in Ne

The day after my parents' failed visit, I found Gideon in the coffee shop downstairs from my office. He was wearing a thin overcoat, his hair was a mess, and his jaw was covered in stubble. His eyes were shadowed with dark circles."I have ten minutes," I said, checking my watch as I sat down across from him. My tone was all business. "I have an international conference call."Gideon flinched at the coldness in my voice."Briony..." he began, his voice terrifyingly hoarse. "I'm sorry. The paint on Halloween, the data last year... I was a goddamn fool. I know I was wrong. I really do."He kept his head down, his hands clenched around his coffee cup, searching my face for any flicker of emotion. But I just watched him calmly. "I know. I've known for a long time.""Give me another chance. Let's start over." Gideon looked up, his eyes pleading. He frantically grabbed a huge, beautifully wrapped box from the seat next to him and pushed it toward me. "Look, I brought the surprise you never g

A week later in Zurich, I had just finished a three-hour M&A meeting and was walking out of the bank, rubbing my sore neck.I stopped the second I pushed open the main doors. At the edge of the plaza outside, a familiar black sedan was parked.Standing beside it were two people I thought I'd never see again—my father, Riccardo, and my mother, Elena. They had clearly been waiting in the cold for a long time.Elena was wearing an expensive fur coat, but her face was pale from the chill. Riccardo was pacing anxiously. When they saw me, Elena rushed over, her eyes instantly turning red."Briony..." Her voice trembled as she tried to take my arm. "How could you be so cruel? Blocking all of us, not leaving a single word... Do you have any idea how worried I've been?"I stepped aside, avoiding her touch, my gaze calm. "I thought I made a clean break. I assumed you'd be pleased.""What kind of thing is that to say?" Riccardo said, walking over with a dark expression, instinctively falling back

The early winter in Zurich was bitingly cold, but my life was slowly falling into a new rhythm.I quickly adapted to the high-pressure pace of the new firm. With my sharp risk-assessment skills, I closed two major deals in just two weeks, cementing my position in the company."We've had a lot of IPs from North America trying to breach our firewalls, digging for information on you," my boss said, handing me a coffee with a raised eyebrow. "But don't worry, I've had our tech guys cover your tracks. The Mafia's reach doesn't extend to the heart of Swiss finance.""Thank you," I said, taking the coffee with a small smile. After work, back in my apartment, I opened my laptop and went to a popular North American social media forum. The top trending topic was a video posted by Gideon. In the video, the once-arrogant New York godfather was a completely different person. He was wearing a rumpled shirt, his eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse as he pleaded with the camera."Briony, I know I

Wall Street. The New York headquarters of the top investment bank.Radiating pure fury, Gideon kicked open the door to the executive's office.Behind the desk, Briony's old university mentor, now the bank's Head of North American Operations, calmly adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses."Why did you transfer her?" Gideon's eyes were bloodshot, like a cornered animal's. "You knew she was about to marry me. Why would you give her a position in Zurich now?"The mentor closed the folder in his hands and looked up, his eyes filled with undisguised contempt."Mr. Rossi. I never thought I'd see the day the heir to the Rossi empire lost his composure," the mentor sneered. "You ask me why? Because I'm someone who actually values her talent, while you are nothing but a worthless bastard.""Shut your mouth!" Gideon roared."Should I?" The mentor stood up, staring him down across the desk. "Three years ago, when Briony pulled four all-nighters to launder your family's dirty money and ended up in the ER
