Chapter 4

Autor: Echo
The day I left was the day before the wedding.

I walked down the stairs, pulling my black suitcase behind me.

In the main hall, Ryn was excitedly setting up several cylindrical devices.

She was whispering to Elena. "When Briony walks down the aisle, these cream bombs will all go off at once. It's going to be epic!"

Elena put down her coffee cup and just gave a tired smile.

"Ryn, don't take it too far. Just get her dress dirty. Don't actually hurt her."

"Don't worry, Mom," Ryn said with a smug arch of her eyebrow. "Briony won't get mad. When has she ever stayed mad? She always just swallows it."

This version is direct, punchy, and uses common but effective slang to capture the "mafia" feel.

She’s talking about when we were kids.

Ryn broke my favorite teddy bear. All she did was shrug and say she didn't mean it.

Elena jumped in front of her. "It's just a toy. So it's broken. Big deal."

What she forgot was, she was the one who gave it to me. For my birthday.

Then Riccardo got on my case, saying I wasn't acting like the daughter of a boss should.

So I stormed out. Just grabbed a small bag and left.

But I was just a kid. Where the hell was I gonna go?

Of course, nobody came for me. After I was frozen stiff, I dragged myself home.

And there they were, the three of them, sitting in the living room. Smirking. Like they knew I'd come crawling back all along.

I stood on the landing, listening in silence.

I felt nothing. My heart was already dead.

I continued down the stairs, the wheels of my suitcase making a soft rolling sound on the hardwood floor.

Gideon was just walking in from outside.

He saw me with the suitcase and raised an eyebrow.

"Couldn't wait to move into my place, huh?" he said, walking toward me with a smirk. "Good. Get used to being the lady of the house."

He reached out to take my suitcase.

I sidestepped him, neatly avoiding his hand.

Gideon's hand hung in the air, and his face instantly darkened.

"Playing the part of the untouchable bride already?" he sneered, stuffing his hand in his pocket. "We're not even married and you're giving me the cold shoulder?"

I ignored him.

I stopped at the front door.

On the wall hung a massive family portrait.

Riccardo, Elena, and Ryn sat in the center, smiling happily. Gideon stood behind Ryn, his hand resting on her chair.

And me? I was on the far edge of the frame, wearing a plain gray coat, looking like an out-of-place servant.

I looked away and pushed the door open without a second glance back.

"Hey! Are you still mad?"

Ryn followed me to the door, yelling at my back.

"If you're going to be like that, you can get to the church by yourself tomorrow! I'm not picking you up!"

I opened the door of the black sedan waiting for me and got in.

Ryn leaned against the doorframe and turned to Gideon, joking with a grin. "Look at her, Gideon. Better watch out. She might get mad and actually run away."

Gideon lit a cigarette, took a long drag, and smiled with absolute certainty.

"Run? She wouldn't dare," he scoffed, blowing out a smoke ring. "The worst she'll do is go cry in the mansion for a while. She'll be in that wedding dress tomorrow, right on time."

The car door closed, shutting out their voices.

"To the airport," I told the driver coldly.

The car pulled smoothly out of the estate.

On the way, my phone buzzed.

A message from Elena.

"Briony, be a good sport when you walk down the aisle tomorrow. Ryn has a little surprise for you. Don't you dare put on that sour face and make us a laughingstock in front of the guests."

Right after, a message from Gideon popped up.

"Once you've dropped off your luggage, go to the master bedroom. I have a surprise for you in the closet, to make up for the last few days. Stop this nonsense."

A surprise?

Another tool to humiliate me, or another pity necklace?

I didn't care anymore.

I opened my contacts and, one by one, blocked Gideon, Elena, Riccardo, and Ryn.

A clean break. No one left to contact.

The flight to Zurich was boarding in half an hour.

In the family group chat, Elena had started a poll: "Let's make a bet. What time will our little princess finally cave and show up tomorrow?"

Riccardo was the first to reply: "10:30. Got to give her time to fix her makeup."

Elena sent a smiling emoji: "I'm guessing 10:00. This is a serious alliance. Briony knows the score."

Gideon chimed in, "10:15 at the latest. If I have to, I'll sweet-talk her a little. She'll put on the dress and show up."

No one cared about my dignity. They only cared about who would win their little game.

I looked at the screen, a smirk playing on my lips.

The boarding call echoed through the terminal.

I stood up and walked away without looking back.

A year later, it was Halloween again.I stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at my reflection. The dark brown hair I'd been forced to get to cover the paint had grown out. My natural blonde had returned, and I'd had it styled in loose, confident waves.I was wearing a black velvet gown that clung to my curves, its embedded crystals glittering under the chandelier. No one would ever dare throw paint on this dress. My life was unrecognizable from a year ago.In Zurich, the global center of capital, I moved with ease between Wall Street and the European markets, guided by my sharp instincts and ruthless decisiveness. At the start of the year, I led the successful acquisition of two aggressive hedge funds, not only bringing in billions in profit for my firm but also making me the youngest senior partner in its history. With my own money, I bought a private estate in the Alps, with a view overlooking the magnificent snow-capped mountains. My connection to the Rossi family in Ne

The day after my parents' failed visit, I found Gideon in the coffee shop downstairs from my office. He was wearing a thin overcoat, his hair was a mess, and his jaw was covered in stubble. His eyes were shadowed with dark circles."I have ten minutes," I said, checking my watch as I sat down across from him. My tone was all business. "I have an international conference call."Gideon flinched at the coldness in my voice."Briony..." he began, his voice terrifyingly hoarse. "I'm sorry. The paint on Halloween, the data last year... I was a goddamn fool. I know I was wrong. I really do."He kept his head down, his hands clenched around his coffee cup, searching my face for any flicker of emotion. But I just watched him calmly. "I know. I've known for a long time.""Give me another chance. Let's start over." Gideon looked up, his eyes pleading. He frantically grabbed a huge, beautifully wrapped box from the seat next to him and pushed it toward me. "Look, I brought the surprise you never g

A week later in Zurich, I had just finished a three-hour M&A meeting and was walking out of the bank, rubbing my sore neck.I stopped the second I pushed open the main doors. At the edge of the plaza outside, a familiar black sedan was parked.Standing beside it were two people I thought I'd never see again—my father, Riccardo, and my mother, Elena. They had clearly been waiting in the cold for a long time.Elena was wearing an expensive fur coat, but her face was pale from the chill. Riccardo was pacing anxiously. When they saw me, Elena rushed over, her eyes instantly turning red."Briony..." Her voice trembled as she tried to take my arm. "How could you be so cruel? Blocking all of us, not leaving a single word... Do you have any idea how worried I've been?"I stepped aside, avoiding her touch, my gaze calm. "I thought I made a clean break. I assumed you'd be pleased.""What kind of thing is that to say?" Riccardo said, walking over with a dark expression, instinctively falling back

The early winter in Zurich was bitingly cold, but my life was slowly falling into a new rhythm.I quickly adapted to the high-pressure pace of the new firm. With my sharp risk-assessment skills, I closed two major deals in just two weeks, cementing my position in the company."We've had a lot of IPs from North America trying to breach our firewalls, digging for information on you," my boss said, handing me a coffee with a raised eyebrow. "But don't worry, I've had our tech guys cover your tracks. The Mafia's reach doesn't extend to the heart of Swiss finance.""Thank you," I said, taking the coffee with a small smile. After work, back in my apartment, I opened my laptop and went to a popular North American social media forum. The top trending topic was a video posted by Gideon. In the video, the once-arrogant New York godfather was a completely different person. He was wearing a rumpled shirt, his eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse as he pleaded with the camera."Briony, I know I

Wall Street. The New York headquarters of the top investment bank.Radiating pure fury, Gideon kicked open the door to the executive's office.Behind the desk, Briony's old university mentor, now the bank's Head of North American Operations, calmly adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses."Why did you transfer her?" Gideon's eyes were bloodshot, like a cornered animal's. "You knew she was about to marry me. Why would you give her a position in Zurich now?"The mentor closed the folder in his hands and looked up, his eyes filled with undisguised contempt."Mr. Rossi. I never thought I'd see the day the heir to the Rossi empire lost his composure," the mentor sneered. "You ask me why? Because I'm someone who actually values her talent, while you are nothing but a worthless bastard.""Shut your mouth!" Gideon roared."Should I?" The mentor stood up, staring him down across the desk. "Three years ago, when Briony pulled four all-nighters to launder your family's dirty money and ended up in the ER

(Gideon's POV)10:30 a.m.Inside St. Paul's Cathedral, the most opulent church in New York City, the air was ice-cold.The pews on either side of the aisle were filled with every major underworld boss, politician, and socialite in New York. But the bride was nowhere to be seen.Guests were starting to whisper.Gideon stood at the altar, glancing irritably at his Patek Philippe."Still putting on a show?" he muttered to Riccardo beside him.Riccardo, puffing on a cigar, frowned but still seemed unconcerned."Women. Always so much drama. She's probably sitting in the car, waiting for you to go out and personally escort her in.""We've spoiled her," Gideon grunted, pushing down a strange knot of panic in his gut.At the church entrance, Ryn clutched a remote control. It was the detonator for the "cream bombs."She was practically vibrating with anticipation for her ultimate prank. The minutes ticked by.11:00 a.m.Restless murmurs rippled through the pews.Gideon's face was a thundercloud
