Chapter 8

Author: Lil Deer
Upon hearing Nina's words, I stood frozen.

I never imagined that Zachary would casually hand over my fate to a stranger. He trampled over my love for him just like that.

At this moment, I didn't know whether to laugh at my own foolishness for not seeing through him or to laugh at him for his blind trust in Nina. He had actually handed her power over my life and death.

Zachary stopped Nina and tenderly caressed her cheek. "Enough, I haven't said anything. Why hurt yourself like this? Sarah would never do this. Who did you learn this from?"

Mentioning me caused Zachary to pause for a moment.

Nina was just as shocked. She never expected to hear anything good about me from Zachary.

Honestly, I hadn't expected it either.

With the key now missing, Zachary turned to Bobby. "Get the tech team here, and also bring some saws."

It seemed that Zachary was now determined to "rescue" me, but it was too little, too late.

I was already dead, Zachary! Completely dead!

The "her" Zachary was referring to was me, of course.I scoffed. After all this time, he still couldn't bring himself to believe I was really dead?Just then, a deliveryman appeared at the door. "Are you Mr. Zachary Finch?" he asked.Zachary snapped out of his daze. "Yes."The deliveryman handed over a package. "This is from Mr. Wilson."Mr. Wilson? In that instant, I knew exactly who it was.He was a former colleague of mine, Joseph Wilson. We trained together every day, ate together, and joked around. If it weren't for Zachary, I probably would have ended up with him.But Zachary had once been my youthful, unrequited love. That was all in the past, though.Zachary opened the package to find a USB drive. He watched the content and learned the truth about that night's banquet. Everything had been orchestrated by Nina.At that moment, Zachary couldn't hold it in anymore. After sobbing uncontrollably, he fell ill.In his delirium, he turned to me with a look of joy in his eye

  • Pray That I Don't Haunt You   Chapter 10

In the end, Zachary decided to go in himself.Since he was too tall, he had the household staff cut away some more of the tank before he entered. With the faint light from outside streaming in, he quickly fixed his gaze on a certain spot.I followed his line of sight and saw my body lying there.Zachary sneered. "Sarah, come on. Stop messing around. You might fool others with this little stunt, but not me. You scared Nina earlier. Now get out here and apologize, or I'll divorce you."You should know that you're just a worn-out woman who's already had kids and been married. No one else would want you, except me."But I didn't need anyone to want me anymore.I watched as Zachary walked toward my body. He reached out, grabbed my wrist that hung limply, and turned to yank me outside. To my horror, I watched as my entire arm was ripped off.Zachary walked out with my severed arm in his hand. Nina turned pale at the sight. The young technician from earlier couldn't hold it in. She s

When Zachary said that last sentence, he purposely raised his voice.I could tell that he wanted me to hear it from within the tank. He really made me sick. The stinking water had already flooded the floor. Nina fought back her nausea as she walked over. The opening in the tank was just big enough for a person to slip inside. She barely poked her head in before she jerked back. With a pale face, she screamed, "Zac! S-Sarah's in there!"Panic-stricken, Nina threw herself into Zachary's arms to seek comfort. "Zac, s-she's pretending to be dead and hiding in there just to scare me! She really hates me. I think I'd better leave her alone for now."With that, she turned to leave, but Zachary caught her wrist. When he heard that I was "pretending", his deep frown finally eased a little. "Don't be scared, Nina. I'll make Sarah get down on her knees and apologize to you. Alright?"I bit down hard on my lower lip. I didn't understand how my already-numb heart could still hurt so much fro

Time passed, yet there was no sign of movement in the water tank.I sneered as I watched Zachary spout nonsense. He didn't know that I was already dead. How could I possibly respond to him? After all, the dead could never speak. The unease in Zachary's heart grew stronger. Finally, his patience ran out. "Sarah, you ungrateful bitch! Do you not understand how lucky you are that I even came to see you?"You used tricks to marry me, and you got pregnant with my children just to fight for my family's inheritance! If you want it so badly, I'll reluctantly give you 5% of the family business. Are you still not satisfied?"Nina is so much more sensible than you are. She doesn't want a single cent. All she wants is to stay by my side. Why can't you learn from her?"His senseless accusations and insults left me numb. My heart no longer stirred.I stared coldly at Zachary, the man I had loved for 12 years. The noble gentleman I once admired was now gone, replaced by nothing but a mass of h

Bobby recoiled in shock.Frowning, Zachary stopped Nina from kneeling. "Nina, he's just a lowly staff member. There's no need to lower yourself like that."Hearing him say that, I nearly screamed. If Bobby was lowly, then what was Nina? Was she not a shameless mistress hiding in the shadows?Bobby kept his tone respectful as he said, "Mr. Finch, the staff said there's already a faint smell of decay. Are you really not going to check?"Nina clung to Zachary's arm. "Zac, why don't we go take a look? Sarah's due any day now. We can't risk something happening to the babies.""Fine, we'll go take a look."Zachary, who had been refusing to budge all along, gave in the moment Nina spoke. At that moment, memories of all my sweet moments with Zachary surged through my mind. Then, they shattered like bubbles, vanishing without a trace. The second they stepped into the water tank room, Zachary's face turned ugly. "Who took a dump in here?"No one answered.Only Bobby walked forward and

  • Pray That I Don't Haunt You   Chapter 5

I wanted to see Zachary's expression when he heard the news of me dying. After all, he was the one who had caused my death. But I had underestimated just how shameless Zachary could be.When he heard the news, his expression faltered for a moment, and he muttered, "It's no wonder she didn't reply to my messages. She was locked in the water tank."Then, with chilling indifference, he continued louder this time, "So what? Are you trying to plead for her now?"Upon hearing his disjointed words, I realized how blind and foolish I had been to have fallen in love with someone like him.How pitiful my unborn children were. They never had the chance to see the world.Bobby, taken aback by Zachary's coldness, still pressed on. "The staff over there reported that the water tank was modified. It's still in the experimental phase, and its drainage system isn't set to change every three hours, but rather every ten hours."But from what the staff said, it seems the water hasn't been changed i

Two more days passed.Zachary, reeking of alcohol, helped Nina through the door. Their unsteady steps caused them both to tumble onto the couch inside. In a daze, Zachary grabbed his phone and dialed a specific number.I glanced over and realized that he was trying to reach me.A cold chill spread through my body. The phone rang, but soon went to voicemail. Undeterred, Zachary dialed a few more times, but still no one answered.I let out a bitter laugh. How could I answer when I was already dead?Besides, my phone had been in the water tank with me.Zachary's face darkened. He typed out a message and sent it to me."Sarah, you should know your place. You've been living off me all these years. Without me, you're nothing. You'd better show up before I lose my temper."Nina looped her arm around his neck and pouted. "Zac, I want some of Sarah's ravioli."Without thinking, Zachary said, "I'll tell her to make it for you. Consider it an apology."I froze, fury and hatred rising

  • Pray That I Don't Haunt You   Chapter 3

Zachary spent two wild days with Nina, ignoring countless messages and calls from Bobby. The situation escalated to the point where Zachary even blocked Bobby on all messaging platforms. When Zachary returned with Nina, I noticed that Bobby seemed to have aged ten years.Zachary glanced at him and scoffed. "Mr. Hudson, could you stop acting like someone just died at home?""Mr. Finch—"Zachary cut Bobby off, saying, "Don't say anything yet. Answer me first. Did Sarah admit that she was wrong? Did she say she would apologize to Nina on her knees?"Ridiculous! Why should I apologize? That night at the banquet, Zachary had texted me, asking me to wait for him in the garden. He said he had something to tell me.But when I ran over with joy, I saw Nina, who had been waiting there for a long time.At that moment, I sensed something wasn't right. Before I could turn around and leave, I heard a loud splash, followed by Nina's cries and pleas. The only ones at the scene were Nina and
