Scarlett

Her words were so dark and unexpected. My face fell slowly as I regarded her with a range of emotions. First shock, then confusion, and then hurt at her words.

All this time, she knew. She knew about the pregnancy I was trying so hard to hide. I had my suspicions but she had finally come open, confirming them. As surprised as I was, I still wasn't as shocked at the knowledge as I was at her words.

The cruelty in it wasn’t something I was used to from her. My lips parted, ready to ask her what she meant, but Harley moved before I could. She pushed up from the chair so fast it scraped against the floor, the sound sharp enough to make me flinch.

Then, she was pacing. Back and forth, one hand gripping the ends of her blonde hair, always twisted in a braid. She twisting it like she wanted to pull the thoughts straight from her head.

“Don’t you think?” she threw at me suddenly, her voice rising. “I mean, you were brought here a lowlife, Scarlett. And for the next ten years, you’re

Scarlett I tore my hands from his like his touch burned. My wrists still tingled where his fingers had wrapped around them, the phantom pressure making my pulse stutter and my thoughts tangle.Without looking back, I turned on my heel and left his presence. My chest felt tight, as if his gaze still pinned me in place, but I forced my legs to move faster. Not bothering to take the elevator this time around, I went down the stairs, passing the tall, watching portraits that seemed to judge my misdeed. I just needed to reach my room. Shut the door. And breathe. But when I rounded the corner at the bottom of the staircase, she was there. My madam. Her lips were pressed so tight they had gone bloodless, her arms folded across her chest like a gate I would never be allowed to pass. Her eyes swept over me once, sharp and accusing, before pinning me with a look that made my stomach clench.“I—” My voice caught, my throat dry. “The Lord…he summoned me—”The words barely left my mouth before he

CardanI hadn’t expected to find her here. She was clutching a cleaning brush like it was a dagger, her eyes wide and locked on the floor as if looking at me might turn her to stone. The scent of her hit me first, warm skin, soap, and something faintly sweet that travelled straight to my head like a rush of good wine.I had meant to check on her days ago, but the pack had been relentless—patrol disputes, territory negotiations, meetings with people I would rather see buried six feet under. Still, the thought of her had lingered in the back of my mind. And now here she was.“Enjoying your new job?” I asked, my voice sounding tired and gravelly. My eyes followed her every move, scanning her from head to toe and stopping at her knuckles whitened around the brush handle. She looked like she expected me to bare my teeth and tear her apart right there. That thought made the corner of my mouth lift. I wouldn’t eat her… at least not yet.I stepped closer, close enough to see the pulse flutte

  • Pregnant For The Enemy Alpha    Stale sameness

ScarlettI SHOULD BE OUT OF MY ROOM. Except, I hadn't been able to lift my head at the breakfast table without meeting unfriendly stares and threatening body language. Even if I didn't understand the strange language they now spoke whenever I came around, the hatred in their eyes needed no translation. My hesitation came to an end with the heavy knock and the scrape of the bolt on my door, followed by the matronly voice of a woman telling me to get up. Her tone wasn’t sharp, but it wasn’t kind either. It was the voice of someone who had been here too long to bother with niceties. When I stepped into the hall, she was waiting. She was extremely tall, like most Lycans. And one glance at her told me she was wiry, with a face carved into a permanent frown. A streak of white split her dark hair, and her shocking green eyes—they reminded me of moss, moved over me like she was counting my flaws. God knows she would lose count.“You’re not going back to the fields,” she said without preamble.

ScarlettIf they saw my belly… I was done. The Lord would find out anyway, and I knew what he would do to me then. The only card I had left to play was him. His name. And if it killed me to use it, then so be it.I lifted my chin just enough to meet the man’s gaze. “If you touch me,” I said, trying to keep my voice low but steady to show seriousness. “you’ll have to answer to Lord Cardan.”The silence that followed was thick enough to choke on. Every woman froze, their gazes snapping toward me like arrows loosed from a bow. The man’s smirk dissolved slowly till it was no more. One of the older women let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “You’re digging your own grave, girl.”A murmur rippled through the room, half awe, half disbelief. The man’s face twisted into something uglier than hatred. “You think hiding behind his name will save you?” he sneered. “You’re nothing but—”The slap came faster than my eyes could track. The palm cracked against my cheek, forcing my head to spin in the opp

CardanA slave trader? I smiled at the thought of being regarded as one. It was easy to be mistaken as such so I didn't totally blame him. The feeling of displeasure sat gently in my chest at the comparison played between me and those lowlives who greed and evil had totally consumed.I took it upon myself to buy women who were to be sold off to a fate worse than death. Worse than working as farmers for the pack. Worse than warming up my bed. Worse than being passed around by men who wouldn’t know the meaning of restraint if it stared them in the eye. They called me a slave trader but I called it salvation.Ten years. That was the deal. They served me, worked for me, and lived under my roof. Fed, clothed, and kept safe from the monsters outside my walls. A decade in my service and they would walk free with more money in their pocket than they would see in a lifetime otherwise. But a few of them I kept closer. They became mine in a way the others never could. I shaped and molded them l
