LOGINI limped down the hallway, trying to move fast but every step hurt.
What could we have possibly done that my legs hurt so much?
I groaned, my legs were slowing me down. I passed the cleaners elevator with the cleaning cart. By the time I reached the changing room, I was breathless. I opened my locker and gasped, the image I saw staring back at me from my mirror looked nothing like me. I looked terrible. My straight black hair was a tangled mess, dark pink bruises littered my neck, and my glasses sat crooked on my nose. I quickly adjusted my glasses and grabbed a comb from my locker to brush my hair.
Suddenly,I heard someone yelling my name as they pushed the door hard, slamming it right after.
“Madam Louise” I turned to see she was the one
“Sophia!” She screamed my name into my face, I closed my eyes, folding my lips “where did you go right after I instructed you to clean the vip suite? The one time you were told to clean a vip suite you vanished” She said her hands akimbo on her waist.
“I…I was in–”
“Ah, ah! Don't stutter! I always knew you were a lazy bun, giving excuses that you're still schooling. If you can't merge the two together just be schooling and don't come here stressing me with your lazy attitude.”
“i didn't even do anythi–"
“I'm still talking! Don't interrupt me” She pointed her finger at me “Because you attend some private university you think you can talk to me however you like?” She said with spite
Here she goes again talking about how I attended a private university that she wasn't opportuned for. I never told anyone about it. It's a scholarship, not some luxury life she thinks I'm living. For goodness sake!
“Morisa covered your shift yesterday. And now again, you're late!” I looked away from her, my hands folded in front of me “Why is the cleaning cart even in the changing room?!” She asked, pointing at the cart.
“I'm sorry I was–”
“Sorry, sorry sorry, Do you ever learn not to make mistakes?!” She glared at me "When I was your age I never slacked, never interrupted my superiors. I was responsible! Is God punishing me for all my good deeds by sending you?!”
I stood still as she paced the room, one hand on her hip, the other pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Not only did you not finish your shift, you didn't clock out, and now you're late! Five hours late!” She shouted “I almost lost my job because of you. Yesterday the vip suite you were supposed to clean was occupied after a client made a reservation. I don't know how the suite was occupied. She threw a tantrum and I was called to the manager's office. I was lucky she had a change of heart and decided after many apologies to get another room”
“I'm so sorry ma'am I really am” I whispered. My heart beating frantically against my chest. If she didn’t get sacked, somebody must have paid the price. And I was the one stupidly occupying the room with Brian.
I'm so done
“What's on your neck?” Madam Louise voice snapped me out of my thoughts as she stared at my neck
“I…I had a nightmare…must have scratched myself and woke up with injuries” I lied, backing away from her
“Sophia, Sophia. I have a daughter just your age, don't take me for a fool”
She reached out and tilted my chin, inspecting my neck. I didn't dare remove her hand.
“While the rest of us were working, my career life almost ended. You were off making out during work hours?!” She asked disgustedly as she stepped away from me inspecting my uniform “Your gown is rumpled”
She stopped, like reality had hit her all at once. Her gaze shifted to my lips “They are swollen…your lips are swollen, your hair…” She whispered.
I shake my head negatively with fear trying to convince her that it wasn't what she was thinking when clearly it was.
“Pack your things, Sophia. You're fired." Her face hardened.
“No…no I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause so much trouble. It's not what you think Madam Louise, please”
“I don't care. One person has to take the fall and it's you. Pack up!”
“I can't please, I have rent to pay and…and” I held my hand together begging
“Ha! Rent? Go to your parents who are sponsoring your school life, why suffer like us?”
“No..no I'm… I'm…an orphan” my voice cracked “And I'm on scholarship, it only covers school fees not hostels or apartments. I need this job, please”
Tears blurred my vision and I dropped to my knees, holding her hand. “I'm in my final year. Just three months from now and I'm done. I just need till the end of this month to have my pay. Pleaseee”
“I'll tell the superiors to bring someone to drag you out Sophia if you don't let go of my hand” She yanked her hand away from my grip.
I broke, right there on the floor.
“Just pack up and leave quietly. Oh good Lord I've been waiting for this day” She looked up, smiling in triumph. “Take the cleaning cart to where it belongs before you leave…actually don't bother. I'll do it for you, consider it the final good deed from me to you. How nice it is that I wouldn't be seeing your face anymore” She smiled as she left the room pulling the cleaning cart behind her, humming to herself.
I collapsed fully, sobbing. If only I had listened to my gut. Heck if only I hadn't met Brian!
I sniffled as I changed out of my uniform. I packed up my things and cleaned my locker. I hung my bag over my shoulder taking my phone before shutting the locker close. I unlocked my phone and fourteen missed from 9pm last night popped up on the notification bar. It was Marco, my neighbour. I dialed his number and on the first ring he picked up.
“Sophia where were you?” Marco's was tight with worry.
“I…I was working” I quietly replied
“Night shift? I thought you don't work during the weekends at night”
We both became silent.
Then his voice dropped “I don't know if I should tell you this over the phone or I wait till you get here” He said confused
“Marco, please tell me now” I whispered, trying to keep my voice steady.
“The landlord. He evicted you from the house” my heart dropped “They broke into your house yesterday and took your things out. He kept screaming about your unpaid rent” My world crashed, I couldn't speak.
The sheets felt rumpled beneath my hands. I stretched my arm across the bed reaching for Miguel, but the space beside me was empty. My eyes flew open. He had fallen asleep in my room the night before. I scrambled to my feet, leaving my slippers behind.“Miguel!” I called out for him, as I came out of my room.He popped his head out from behind his bedroom door. “Yes, mummy.”I stared at him, confused. “Baby, come out fully would you.”Somehow I was more curious about why he was hiding behind his door than why he wasn’t beside me in bed.“Are you sure mummy?”“Of course I’m sure, baby.” I tightened my silk robe around me.He came out of his room and said, “I dressed for school,” he looked down as though he had been caught doing something bad.“Mummy, you had a bad dream yesterday,” then he pulled the puppy face at me. “And I didn’t want to disturb mummy,” he came closer to me and hugged my legs then looked up at me with his doe eyes, and I was not falling for it this time.I hated when
The restaurant app was still open on my phone, but I put my phone down on the kitchen counter. He saw her. Which meant he had seen the phone pointed at him, which also meant he had seen someone watching. That explained why she looked pale. Jet lag? Pft, Becky flies like she was born with wings. Did he confront her? Did he do something to her? I thought to myself. "How did it happen?” I asked “Did he demand something from you?” I dragged both my hands down my face and pressed my lips together, staring at her.She unexpectedly let out a hysterical laugh. “Do you see yourself? I don't think you're over this man.”Annoyed at her outburst, I pushed past her to the living room, which further ignited her laughter.“Hush it! Miguel is asleep.” I pointed at his room door and rolled my eyes at her. “I'm ordering nothing for you,” I sat on the sofa to finish my order and made payment. “You think this is funny? This is serious.” I said, refusing to look at her.“I'm so sorryyy, but your face.”
My phone buzzed again. “I'm not joking. I think it's him!” Then a video notification popped up beneath it.With shaky hands, I set my phone face down on my desk, pretending I didn’t see a thing as I picked up a file I had promised myself I'd work on after the meeting. My head pounded at the same rate my heart was beating as I read the same sentence over and over again and with ever passing seconds, my vision blurred. Surely, it must be some random man she has mistaken for Brian, but I know Becky isn't stupid. My phone buzzed again, this time longer than the message notifications. I couldn't bring myself to ignore it, so I turned my phone and my eyes set on the screen. Becky was calling. Without delay, I declined the call, my phone screen was damp from my sweaty hands.“You can ignore me, but this is important!!” Her message appeared immediately after. From the exclamation mark alone, I could hear Becky's voice yelling in my head. Another video notification popped up again and her
The handshake lasted exactly as long as it should have.“And you are?” She asked.“I… I'm… I'm Sophia… Sophia Hart,” I released her hand and reached behind me to right the chair I had knocked. Mostly because I needed somewhere to put my hands and something to look at that wasn't her face.“It's great meeting you Sophia Hart. One of Aurevéra's best jewellery designers,” she took her seat. “How does that sound? Excellent right?” The smile she had never left her face. Someone seeing her for the first time would think she smiles on a daily basis. Milson. The name replayed in my head. Of all the– No. Milson is a name. Names are just sounds and the world is full of them. I said to myself.Nobody really called her Mrs. Milson. Not the board. Not the department heads. Not even the clients who had been with the company since its founding. Heck, the name plate on her desk read ‘Naomi Chief Executive Officer.’ She was simply Mrs. Naomi and somehow that single name carried more weight than mos
That sent a shiver down my spine, but I brushed it off. I have to be brave. The moment the elevator reached the ground floor. The commotion in the company was loud as people ran from the supposed fire emergency Mr. Collins started. I pushed through the crowd and at the far end of the reception Mr. Collins pointed at me to the security officers. I pushed even harder, in no time I reached the parking lot, but my feet were no longer on the ground as the security guard held me by my arm. “Let me go! I'm a staff, I work here and not a thief!” I yelled. “Mr. Collins claims you stole from his office.” The security guard on my right said to me.“Yes…” Mr. Collins came into view panting dreadfully. He took in an amount of breath before he said “She stole!” Pointing his index finger at me, his chest heaving up and down while his other hand rested over his round belly. He reached for the paper file, but I squeezed the files tightly in my hands as he tried to pull it away from me. “No!” I scr
“Mummy, but I don't want to stay home.” Miguel crawled on his bed to meet me from where I sat on his bed to hug me.“No baby, your body says otherwise. It's burning hot.” I place my palm on his forehead. “Ouch! so hot.” I fan my hand. He laughed faintly. “No mummy I'm not.” I sighed. Healthy Miguel would have tried to make a joke from what I said. “Just rest baby. For today, tomorrow I'll drop you off personally at school.” “Okay mummy. Is Aunty Becky coming over?” “No baby, she's still in London. Nanny Ann will take care of you.” “Nana?” He asked brushing his dark hair away from his face.“Yes baby. Looks like someone needs a haircut,” I pat his head and lay him back on his bed. “I have to go to work now unless mummy will be late.”He nodded in reply as his eyelids slowly flickered closed. I kissed his forehead before leaving his room. A call came through my car Bluetooth that was connected to my phone. The screen revealed CEO. I picked the call, and her motherly voice sounde
“You're pregnant,” The doctor said smiling.“What do you mean? I don't understand,” The word didn't register.“You're pregnant. Congratulations,” She said smiling “On your way out, ask one of the nurses in the reception to guide you to the obstetrician.” I nodded leaving the office numb founded as
"Give me his number.” She demanded.“I don't have his, just the agent's number,” I murmured. “Damn it,” Becky hissed, pulling away from me as she raked her hands through her glossy brunette hair. “Save your tears, love. Fucking bastard should have left your things inside till you came. Maros told
“The landlord. He evicted you from the house” my heart dropped “They broke into your house yesterday and took your things out. He kept screaming about your unpaid rent” My world crashed, I couldn't speak.“I'm on my way Maros” I muttered.I froze, not sure if I should run home, email the agent and
A rush of panic and desire engulfed me. I was almost naked in front of a man. The same scenario I might have judged harshly in another girl yet here I was, breathless and exposed before him. My first love. His mouth found the hollow of my neck, his breath hot against my skin. He nibbled my earlobe
