Caspian's POV

She found the money.

She never said a word about it, but I knew.

I notice the small things, and I notice the drawer that closed a quarter inch off from where I left it, the plastic sleeve turned the wrong way, the way her eyes moved over me at dinner that night, searching.

And I noticed the fear.

She was afraid of the answer. That was why she didn't ask.

Some part of her had done the math the same way I would have, and had decided that not knowing was safer than knowing, and so

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 76: The Name

Ana's POV The lift doors stood open and I didn't get in.I read the message once, with the bag cutting into my shoulder, and then again to find what was new in it. It wasn't the voice. The roses had that voice, and so had the card that said Found you, and the line in the lift at Strauss Technology about my name. It wasn't the cruelty either. What was new was the timing. The roses had known where I worked. The email after the gala had known the colour of my dress. This one had known what I would do this morning before I was done doing it, and it knew what a message said that I had read over a man's shoulder at four in the dark.Whoever this was hadn't been watching the building. They had been watching him.Behind me the doors slid shut and the lift hummed away without me. Then standing with my thumb over the screen, I did what I had not once done in eight months of being hunted.I replied.‘What do you want’I sent it plain, no please, no question mark. The dots appeared at once, a

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 75: The Inventory

Ana's POV I was dressed by five and sat at the kitchen island while the light climbed the glass, with the decree flat in front of me and my bag standing by the door.Caspian came in at a quarter past eight, barefoot, in the shirt he had slept in, one hand dragging down his face. He got three steps into the room and stopped. His eyes went to the bag. Then the paper. Then me."You're dressed," he said."Sit down.""I'd rather stand.""Then stand." I turned the decree a quarter turn so the signature faced him. "I'm going to read you something. Please don't interrupt until I'm done."He didn't say anything. In all the months I had known him, I had never seen him walk into a room that had already made up its mind. He stood there like someone feeling for a wall in the dark.Taking out my phone, I opened the list, but then realized I didn't need it. I knew it by heart."Four days," I said. "You held my scan for four days and let me hand it to you like a gift.""I told you that. I wanted

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 74: Eleven Weeks

Ana's POV Emily came through the front door with her heel, because both of her arms were full of food."Don't look at it," she said, and lined three covered dishes along the kitchen counter. "Nobody has to eat any of it. I made too much and I refuse to carry it home on the train.""What is it?""Something with lentils. Something with cheese. The third one is a mystery." She peeled back the foil, sniffed, and pressed it down again. "Still a mystery."I laughed. It came out small and rusty, like a hinge nobody had touched in weeks, and Emily pretended not to hear it, which was the kindest thing anyone had done for me since the hospital. She dropped onto the living room rug and I sat beside her with my back against the couch. For twenty minutes she told me about her landlord, who had emailed the whole building four paragraphs about recycling bins and signed it with his full legal name and the word Regards. She read it aloud in the voice of a bored judge. I listened to every word and cou

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 73: What I Read at Three in the Morning

Caspian's POV It took nine days and two phone calls.I owned the group. The group owned the building. And the building had twenty years of personnel records, and a man who works a locum shift leaves a trail through a payroll system whether he means to or not. Renner wouldn't meet me. He didn't need to."I need a file," I told my compliance officer. "A patient record, Calder Street, two years back. The name is Voss.""One moment." Keys clicking. "There's a seal on this one, sir.""Lift it.""Can I ask what this is in connection with? Just so I flag it correctly on our end.""No," I said. "Lift the seal.""Understood." There was a pause, longer this time. "It's an internal seal, Mr. Strauss. Not a court order, not a regulatory hold. Internal flags like this one are usually set at the request of someone inside the organization.""Whose request?""It doesn't say. Just a code. Could be legal, could be a board member, could be a subsidiary chair acting on their own authority. The system d

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 72: The Date

Ana's POV Emily's reply came back longer than I expected, and I could feel the discomfort in it before I'd even finished reading.I called her the second I was done."Walk me through it," I said."Calder Street sits under a subsidiary," Emily started. "The subsidiary sits inside a package of eleven facilities. All acquired three years ago, one deal, one signature. The parent company is Strauss Technology Limited.""So he owns it?""The company owns it. He owns the company. Those aren't automatically the same thing, Ana, and I want to be honest with you about that before you build something out of it.""How hard was it to find?""That's the part that's bothering me," she mumbled. "Under an hour. Public filing. I didn't need to break into anything or call in a favour. A thing that simple to find isn't usually a thing somebody's hiding.""Then why does it feel like a secret?""I don't know," Emily said. "Maybe because nobody ever told you to go looking."“I… don't… I..”"I couldn't find

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 71: Whatever She Told You

Sebastian's POV "Whatever she told you," Nicole said, "I never touched her.""What do you mean?"The words came out of me flat, giving nothing, and it cost me more than anything I'd said in that doorway so far, because the honest answer was that I had no idea what she was talking about, and the second she knew that, this whole conversation was over. She stepped back from the door, not quite an invitation, more like she needed the distance to keep talking."I only spoke to her," she continued. "I want that clear before anything else. I didn't touch her, I didn't threaten her, I just stood in a parking lot and I talked.""Go on."Just two words. I had learned, across a hundred negotiating tables, that the emptiest words in the language does more work than any full one, because a frightened person can't stand to fill a quiet room with nothing. And thankfully, Nicole couldn't stand it either."She'd just come out of some meeting," she rambled. "I didn't plan it that carefully, Sebastia

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 5: Fifty Thousand Reasons

Ana's POV I had been at my desk twenty minutes when HR walked in and shut the door behind her."Settling in?" she asked, but her eyes were doing something her smile wasn't."It's going as planned." I kept my voice light. "The launch timeline holds. I'll have the full rollout deck ready by Friday."

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 4: The Man Who Never Forgets

Caspian’s POV I knew her the second I walked through that door.I had told myself I wouldn't. I had told myself a man doesn't remember one face out of a crowded club, one night out of a hundred forgettable nights, one woman he left before the sun came up. I had told myself a lot of things on the f

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 3: The Stranger and the Cash

Ana's POV I looked at the floor he wanted me to kneel on.Then I looked at my husband, sitting there so sure of himself, and I almost laughed."No," I said. His smile slipped. "Ana.""I will never kneel to her." My voice was steady now. The shaking was gone, burned clean out of me. "Keep your sign

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 2: The Woman in My Kitchen

Ana's POV I didn't leave the bedroom for three days. The curtains stayed closed. The phone stayed face down. I laid on top of the covers in the same robe and stared at the light on the ceiling, morning into evening into morning again.Sebastian didn't come home. Why would he? He had somewhere bett
