Chapter 2

Author: Pantaloon
It was actually my idea to go for that prenatal checkup. Compared to other women six months along, my belly was far too big—almost the size of someone carrying twins.

I looked it up online. A baby that grew too large could make delivery dangerous for both mother and child. That was why I suggested another hospital visit, just to be safe.

I never expected that this marriage, or James' six years of persistence in chasing me, was nothing but a complete lie.

I was never his wife. I was just the substitute carrying the child he wanted for himself and Natasha.

One night, half-asleep in bed, I vaguely heard James on the phone. I could not catch his words clearly, but when I woke, the house was suddenly filled with several new maids.

"Jenna, you're awake?" he said.

"Why are there so many people here?" I asked.

His eyes flickered nervously before he rushed over to hug me, patting my head gently like always.

"Did you forget again? I have to leave on a business trip for a few days. Since I can't be here with you, I hired them to take good care of you."

I remembered it was the end of the month. James always disappeared for a few days around this time.

The next day, he was gone.

Shortly after I got up, one of the maids brought me a pill. "Mrs. Hunt, here's the prenatal medicine Mr. Hunt instructed us to give you. Three times a day, and not a single dose can be missed."

A chill spread through me. These women were not here to care for me, but to watch over me. Bitterness welled up inside me.

Right then, my phone rang. Of course, it was James—right on time. He knew exactly when I woke up and when I was supposed to take the medicine.

"Jenna, did you take your pill today?" he asked.

My throat tightened. I stayed quiet for a long time, fighting down the hurt and resentment. "Not yet. James, do I really have to keep taking this medicine?"

His tone turned sharp instantly. "It's for your own good. Take it. Don't make me angry."

Whatever fragile hope I had left was finally shattered. Under the watchful eyes of the maids, I swallowed the pill.

From then on, every single day, right before I took my dose, he would call or video chat at the same time.

The maids looked on with envy. "Mrs. Hunt, Mr. Hunt really cares about you. He remembers every dose and even calls to remind you. The love between you two is admirable."

I said nothing and merely forced a weak smile.

What was there to admire? That my so-called loving husband cared more about keeping me alive long enough to deliver the baby than about me?

When the maids were not looking, I lay in bed and booked an appointment for an abortion at another hospital.

Since James never once considered me his wife, I wasn't going to sit here and wait to die. This mistake had gone on long enough.

Not long after, my phone buzzed with a message. It was from Natasha. "Jenna, you haven't been home in so long. Isn't it your birthday today? Mom wants you to come back for dinner."

The words made me clutch the phone tight as my breath caught. Natasha was my stepsister, and Tilly Fisher was my biological mother. But when I was still young, Tilly had thrown me out of the house.

On my 18th birthday, Natasha had jumped into the water herself, yet she claimed I pushed her.

Not only did Mom blame me, but she was also desperate to keep her place in her new family. Hence, she did not hesitate to send me away.

When I did not reply, Natasha sent another message. This time, it was a photo of a man driving. Only part of his arm was visible, but the wedding band on his finger was one I knew all too well.

"Jenna, James is here too. He wants you to join us." A message followed.

"You know I have the power to do so!"That one sentence was enough to make me leave the room. I knew James too well—if forcing me out meant destroying someone else's life, he wouldn't hesitate.I opened the door and looked at him coldly. "James, what exactly do you want? Will you only be satisfied once you've driven me to my death?"The moment I spoke, he started begging me. "Jenna, thank goodness! You're finally willing to see me. You know I didn't mean that. I simply had no other choice. You refused to see me, no matter what I tried. This was the only way left!"He reached for my arm, trying to drag me out with him.Abigail instantly stepped between us, shielding me like a mother hen. "If you've got the guts, ruin my company then. But you're not taking her anywhere today!"I couldn't help but laugh.James froze, staring at me with a dazed, almost tender expression. In the end, I gently pulled Abigail aside before turning to him. "Fine. Let's go downstairs. We'll talk."His f

In the blink of an eye, I had been staying at Abigail's place for two weeks. Having her around made everything a lot easier than being alone. One sunny afternoon, I was lying by the window, soaking up the sun, when my lawyer called. His tone was still apologetic. "Ms. Lowe, Mr. Hunt still refuses to cooperate. No matter what we say, he won't sign the divorce papers. He said he wants you to meet him in person."I refused the idea of meeting James on principle. "Let it drag then. If he won't cooperate, we'll drag it to the court."Shortly after I hung up, Mom called. I stared at her number on the screen. Lately, Mom had been calling all the time. Sometimes, she would pester until I picked up, and other times she would remind me of Dad's last words to guilt me into answering. When I finally answered, Mom sounded cheerful over the phone. "Jenna, how's your recovery? Is there anything you want me to bring? How about your favorite smoked pork ribs or salad when you were little?"I l

Third Person POVTilly collapsed onto the couch.James staggered his way out. He couldn't bear to think about it. Jenna, the woman he had chased for six years, looked strong on the outside but was fragile inside, and had endured so much pain. How much courage had it taken for her to keep living? The misfortune of her youth was followed by the cruel blow he dealt her as an adult. That wound had cut through her entire life."James, you really are a bastard!" he cursed himself. With a sharp crack, he slapped himself hard across the face.A deep red print bloomed across his cheek, but he didn't care. He went straight to find Natasha again. This time, the moment he laid eyes on her, hatred burned inside him.If it hadn't been for her, Jenna would never have suffered so much.James' voice came out low and cold, sounding more furious than ever. "Do you remember now? Was it really Jenna who pushed you into the water that day?"Natasha paled, panic flashing in her eyes. She shook he

Third Person POVAfter Jenna hung up without hesitation, James collapsed onto the floor. The room was stained crimson, the fetus on the floor. James buried his face in his hands and broke down, sobbing. He didn't know how long he had stayed like that until a nurse's voice pulled him back."Sir, we need to clean up. Could you please step outside?"Staggering to his feet, James moved aside. Two nurses began stripping the blood-soaked pads, whispering to each other as they worked."Poor thing—such a big fetus lost just like that. The blue surgical drape was soaked through, and it even turned red from the blood.""Honestly, you can't blame the mother. It's only been six months, and the baby's already that big. If she had carried to term, it might have killed her."James pressed his lips tightly, his face deathly pale. For some unknown reason, he took the fetus with him. His mind was in a haze as he stumbled out of the hospital. He did not know where to go.In the past, he always

The moment I texted James back, his call came through almost instantly. But I didn't answer. He could call again after he saw the surprise I left him.Abigail drove me to her place. I had planned to check into a recovery clinic for post-abortion care, but she insisted it wasn't safe. With James' power, no private facility could guarantee to keep him away. She was right, so I stayed with her instead. As I lay in her bed, James finally walked into the operating room I had just left. Blood soaked the sheets. It was as if someone had slammed a hammer into his chest. His knees buckled, and he stumbled back, only to step directly on something soft. The jolt made him leap back in horror, and he widened his eyes in shock. His hands shook as he fumbled for his phone. He could barely hold it, his voice trembling with panic. "Jenna, don't do this. Where are you? Why did you go to the hospital today? We didn't have any tests scheduled!"I let out a weak, bitter laugh. So, James remembered c

I left Natasha's place alone, feeling numb and hollow. I walked the whole way home without even thinking to hail a cab.By the time I got back, it was already late at night. A light rain had soaked my hair.James was there, standing by the window with a cigarette. The moment he saw me, he crushed it out and hurried over. "Jenna, where were you? I called you so many times, but you didn't answer. I was worried sick!"I said nothing. He suddenly pulled me into his arms, his voice trembling. "I was terrified just now. I hadn't heard a word from you, and I thought I was going crazy!"When his hand brushed against my damp hair, panic flashed across his face, and he quickly led me to a couch. He fetched a towel before gently drying my hair."Jenna, I was too impulsive earlier. I lost control, but you have to believe that I didn't mean it. Natasha's your sister. You went too far with her. Her arm was so red that it became bruised.""So you really think I did that to her?"The words w
