Dacre’s pov

I looked out the window. The city was moving, oblivious. My mother had been busy. Not running my company into the ground—she wasn’t that stupid—but remaking it in her own image. Filling it with people who owed their loyalty to her.

“Okay,” I said finally, turning back to Sarah. Her eyes were wide, waiting for my reaction. “Get me the full, unedited reports on the Volkov merger. And the personnel files on everyone she hired or fired. I want to see everything.”

“Right away, sir.”

“And Sarah?” I added as she turned to leave.

“Yes, sir?”

“The coffee’s good.”

A real, genuine smile broke through her professional mask.

“Thank you so much sir,” she said before walking out as I leaned against my seat.

It didn’t take long before I was seated in the conference room with the people all scattered around me.

I nodded as they all welcomed me back with messages as I was slowly getting tired of hearing this.

"Reports," I said, my voice cutting through the pleasantries. No small talk

Zelda’s povThe champagne in my flute had gone flat. I didn’t want another one as I just stayed there. My son had vanished. My future daughter-in-law had been caught in a compromising position with… with Jake, of all people. I didn't even know what to say or do. Soon, Alistair showed up. “You left quite fast,” he smiled. “What’s the matter?”I kept my eyes fixed on the rows of expensive bottles behind the bar. “What do you want, Alistair? Come to gloat? To see the great Zelda Thorne’s perfect plan explode in her face?”“I just wanted to know if you were okay,” he sighed. It was worse than gloating. “You looked… shaken.”A bitter laugh escaped me. “Shaken. That’s one word for it. I just caught my son’s supposed fiancée—the girl I’ve been shoving down his throat for months—locked in a rather passionate embrace with another man. Because my son is too stupid and too heartbroken to see her as anything other than a stand-in for the woman he actually loved.” The words tasted like ash. I fin

Zelda’s povI totally understood her. I knew just how crazy all of this was. “I’m tired, Zelda,” she said, turning back to me. The fight was gone. “I’m so tired of trying to be what you want me to be, what Dacre needs me to be. I’m going home.”She started to walk past me, back toward the ballroom.“Wait,” I said, the CEO in me snapping back to attention, trying to salvage the mess. “Let me… let me go get Dacre. We’ll… we’ll fix this. He’s not well, he’s grieving, he didn’t mean—”“I’m done waiting for him,” she said as she walked away from me.I had to find Dacre. I had to make him understand what he’d done.I turned back into the party and stared around me trying to locate him. He wasn’t at the bar. He wasn’t with the investors. My stomach twisted tighter than ever as I reached out and caught Mark’s arm as he whisked past me, tray of empty glasses in his hands."Mark. My son. Where is he ?"The young man looked startled. "Mr. Thorne? He… he left, Mrs. Thorne. About twenty minutes a

Zelda’s pov. The kiss was an earthquake. A fundamental shifting of the continents of my life. Alistair Croft. My husband’s nemesis. My own… Adversary. And now… this. His mouth was on mine, and it wasn’t a gentle exploration. It was a claiming. A collision of thirty years of pent-up frustration, rivalry, and a shocking, terrifying kind of recognition. It tasted of expensive whiskey and a shared, brutal understanding of how the world worked. He grabbed my waist as I held his suit with a solid fist.We kissed for a while before he broke away from me with a sigh.“Zelda… let’s take a break.”It was then I realized that I was to be here for my son and not with him.The gala. My son. The carefully constructed narrative I was supposed to be overseeing. I nodded. “I need a break.”He studied my face, his own expression unreadable in the dark. He didn’t smile. He didn’t look triumphant. He just looked… serious. “Of course.”I nodded and walked away from him.The ice queen. The matriarch. The

Dacre’s povOne of them—tall, brunette, sharp eyes—tilted her head. “You’re calmer than I expected. Word is you don’t usually entertain questions like these.”“Word exaggerates,” I said smoothly, sipping. “I can be entertaining when I choose to.”“Prove it,” she teased, leaning closer.I smirked, but my chest burned. I wasn’t thinking about her, or them, or the deals being hinted at between their sentences. I was thinking about the balcony. About Renee’s trembling voice when she asked me if I was kissing her or Katherine. About the silence I gave her instead of an answer.I hated silence. But with her, I had nothing else. The conversation dragged on, women tossing questions like darts, me catching each one without effort. My mouth moved, I laughed when needed, I promised things I probably wouldn’t give. It was easy, mechanical. But inside… I felt split.Mark leaned close at one point, whispering, “You should check on her.”I shot him a look. “Drop it.”“She looked—”“Mark.” My voice c

Renee’s povDacre blinked at me, confused for a moment. “What?”“You said her name.” My voice cracked between disbelief and fury. “Don’t lie to me, Dacre. I heard it.”“I didn't mean for this… I thought…”“Oh my God,” I said weakly, stepping back. My hands shook as I crossed my arms over my chest. “How could you—you think of me that way?”“Maybe you misheard,” he tried, his voice calm but tight.“Don’t you fucking gaslight me man,” I growled. “I heard you. Plain as day. Katherine.”He sighed heavily, jaw tight. “Look, we were kissing. Things get—mixed up sometimes—”“Mixed up?!” My laugh was sharp, hard. “So what, you weren’t kissing me? You were kissing her—in your head?”Dacre’s eyes flickered, and for the first time that night he looked guilty. Actually guilty. And then it hit me. “Oh my God. That’s it, isn’t it? You were doing all this to her and not me. You thought she was me.”“Renee…”“Was it me you wanted? Or was it Katherine?”He didn't say anything which only angered me even

Zelda’s povWe stood at the railing, not speaking, just looking out. The tension wasn’t about business anymore. It was thicker, more intimate.“All these years,” I said softly, almost to myself. “We’ve been trying to destroy each other.”“It was a good game,” he replied, his voice quiet. “The best I ever played.”I turned to look at him as I saw him looking at me with soft eyes. He was looking at me not as Zelda Thorne, the corporate titan, but just as… a woman. A widow. A mother fighting to hold her world together. His hand slowly reached up to brush my cheek. I should have pulled away. I should have slapped him. I did nothing.“All that energy,” he murmured, his face inches from mine. “All that passion spent on hating each other. What a waste.”And then he kissed me.It wasn’t gentle. It was hungry, and fierce, and tasted of thirty years of pent-up rivalry and a shocking, breathtaking respect. It was the most honest interaction I’d had with anyone since my husband died.My hands cam
