LOGINAcross the street from the Royal Academy, a white van with a logo that said "City Plumbing" sat idling.
Inside, it looked like the cockpit of a spaceship. Banks of servers hummed, and monitors displayed live feeds from every camera in a three-block radius.
A man sat in the dark, watching the footage of the sprinkler incident on loop. He zoomed in on Alex’s wrist.
"Subject Alpha confirmed," the man spoke into a headset. His voice was mechanical. "The boy bypassed a secure municipal grid in under ten seconds. His coding signature matches the incident at the Arctic Core five years ago."
"And the girl?" A distorted voice replied from the speakers.
The man switched cameras to the video of Mia hitting Julian with a shoe. "Subject Beta. Highly aggressive. Protective instincts confirmed. No overt powers displayed yet."
"What about Subject Gamma?"
"The little one? Aurora?" The man zoomed in on the black SUV leaving the school. Through the tinted windows, thermal imaging showed a small heat signature radiating intense energy—hotter than a normal human.
"Subject Gamma is a nuclear reactor," the man whispered. "Energy readings are off the charts. If we capture her... The Architects can rebuild the world in a week."
"Proceed with Phase Two," the voice ordered. "Separate them from the father. He is too dangerous. Take the children when they are vulnerable."
"Copy. Engaging stealth mode."
Half an hour later. Scoops & Smiles Ice Cream Parlor.
Jackson rented out the entire second floor (habit).
Alex was eating mint chocolate chip, Mia had strawberry, and Aurora had... everything. Her bowl was a mountain of sugar.
Serenity walked in, looking flustered. She had just come from a charity meeting.
"Jackson!" Serenity marched over to the table. "The Headmaster called me. He said you gave him a blank check and told him to 'buy better teachers'?"
"He was incompetent," Jackson wiped ice cream from Aurora’s nose. "And he let a bully touch Alex. I should have bought the building and evicted him."
"You are spoiling them," Serenity sighed, stealing a spoonful of Jackson's gelato. "Alex, hacking the sprinklers? Really?"
"It was self-defense, Mom," Alex argued. "I calculated the trajectory. Minimal damage, maximum humiliation."
"That's my boy," Jackson smirked.
Serenity glared at him, but she couldn't help laughing. She leaned her head on Jackson’s shoulder. It was a perfect afternoon.
Suddenly, Aurora stopped eating.
She dropped her spoon. Clatter.
Her big brown eyes widened. The violet flecks in her irises began to swirl. She stared out the window at the busy street below.
"Rory?" Jackson noticed immediately. "What's wrong, baby? Brain freeze?"
Aurora shook her head slowly. She pointed a tiny finger at a grey sedan parked across the street. It looked like an ordinary car.
"The Bad Eye," Aurora whispered.
"What?" Jackson tensed up.
"The Bad Eye is watching us," Aurora shivered, hiding her face in Serenity's coat. "It feels cold. Like the dark basement."
Jackson didn't ask questions. He trusted his daughter’s instincts more than any radar.
"Get down," Jackson said sharply.
"Jackson?" Serenity grabbed the kids.
Jackson stood up and walked to the window, shielding his family with his body. He scanned the street. The grey sedan... the windows were too dark. The engine was running.
He stared at the car. The driver seemed to sense he was being watched.
The grey sedan suddenly peeled out of the parking spot, merging into traffic and disappearing instantly.
"Luke," Jackson pressed his comms earpiece. "Grey sedan. License plate ending in 89. Track it. Now."
"On it, Boss," Luke replied from the security detail downstairs.
Jackson turned back to the table. The fun was over.
"We are leaving," Jackson said, picking up Aurora. "Alex, Mia, stay between me and Mom. Move."
"Is it the bad guys again?" Mia asked, grabbing her brother's hand.
"Just precautions," Serenity smoothed Mia’s hair, but she exchanged a worried look with Jackson.
They had five years of peace.
But as they walked out of the ice cream shop, Jackson knew the vacation was over. The Architects had found them.
And this time, they were coming for the kids.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" The Midnight Express tore through the darkness of the Swiss Alps at 300 kilometers per hour.In the exclusive private dining car, crystal glasses jingled softly with the vibration of the tracks. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white. The horizon was white. It was a blank canvas."Whoa," Alex looked at his hands. They were glowing. "High definition rendering. Zero latency.""Where are the toys?" Aurora appeared next to him. That night, the Palace was quiet. But the air was heavy. In the royal nursery, five-year-old Aurora was tossing and turning in her bed. She was sweating.“No… go away…” she whimpered in her sleep.Around her room, objects began to react to her distress. Her teddy bears floated into the air. The heavy curtains rustled as if caught in a storm, though the windows were closed. The water in her glass began to boil.In the Dream:Aurora was standing in a field of grey ash. The sky was purple. In the distance, a massive Black Tower stretched up into the clouds. It looked like a needle piercing the sky.Standing at the top of the tower was a man. He didn't have a face. Just a smooth, white mask with a single vertical line drawn on it."Come here, little star," the man’s voice echoed inside her head. "Your light belongs to me."Shadowy hands reached out from the ground, grabbing Aurora’s ankles."Daddy!" she screamed in the dream. In the Real World:CRACK!The mirror on Aurora's wall shattered
