Chapter 104: The White Room

Alex woke up to a headache.

He wasn't in a van anymore. He was lying on a soft, white bed.

He sat up quickly. The room was bright—too bright. Everything was white. The walls, the floor, the furniture. It looked like the inside of an Apple store mixed with a hospital.

"Mia? Aurora?" Alex jumped out of bed.

Mia was sleeping on a couch nearby. Aurora was curled up on a beanbag chair.

"Alex?" Mia woke up, rubbing her neck. "Where are we? Are we dead?"

"Not dead. Just... relocated," Alex scanned the room. No windows. One door with no handle. And in the corner, a camera lens tracking his every move.

He rushed to Aurora. The metal collar was still locked around her small neck. A tiny red light blinked on it.

"Rory, wake up," Alex shook her gently.

Aurora opened her eyes. She looked terrified. She tried to use her telekinesis to summon her teddy bear from across the room. She frowned, straining. The bear didn't move.

"My magic is gone," Aurora whispered, tears filling her eyes.

"It's the collar," Alex examined the device. "It blocks your brain waves. Don't worry, I'll get it off."

Click.

The handle-less door slid open.

A man walked in.

He was tall, thin, and wore a pristine white suit that matched the room. He wore rimless glasses and held a tablet. He looked like a university professor.

"Good morning, subjects," the man smiled politely. "I apologize for the rough extraction. The EMP was necessary to disable your father's... intrusive surveillance."

Alex stepped in front of his sisters, his small body tense. "Who are you? How much ransom do you want? My dad will pay anything."

"Money?" The man laughed softly. "Money is for primitive minds like The Order. We are The Architects."

He tapped his tablet. The wall transformed into a giant screen, showing complex DNA helixes.

"I am Dr. Silas. And you three... you are the most precious resource on the planet."

"You, Alex," Silas pointed a laser at him. "IQ of 180. Analytical processing speed that rivals a quantum computer."

"Mia," he pointed at her. "Unnatural physical resilience and combat reflexes."

"And Aurora..." Silas looked at the little girl with hunger in his eyes. "The Conduit. Pure energy manipulation."

"We are not resources," Alex said coldly. "We are kids. And our dad is going to dismantle this place brick by brick."

"Your father relies on technology," Dr. Silas said calmly. "And we own technology. He is blind now. He can't find you."

He walked over and placed a tray of food on the table. Nutrient bars and vitamin water.

"Eat. Rest," Dr. Silas turned to leave. "Classes begin tomorrow. We are going to strip away your human weaknesses and make you... perfect."

The door slid shut and locked with a heavy magnetic thud.

Mia kicked the door in frustration. "I hate him! I want to go home!"

"Don't cry," Alex adjusted his glasses. His fear was gone, replaced by the calculating coldness of a hacker who found a puzzle.

He looked at the camera in the corner. Then he looked at the electronic lock on Aurora's collar.

"He said Dad is blind because he relies on tech," Alex whispered to his sisters. "But Silas made a mistake."

"What?" Mia sniffled.

"He put me inside his system," Alex smirked. "He thinks I'm a prisoner. But I'm actually a virus."

Alex reached into his shoe. He pulled out a tiny, thin piece of wire he had hidden in his sole.

"Watch my back," Alex sat next to Aurora. "Let's see what makes this collar tick."

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white.
