Chapter 33: The Dead Princess

Jackson Sterling did not sleep that night. He sat in his study, surrounded by old newspapers and encrypted files that his team had dug up from European archives.

It was 4 AM when Luke knocked on the door. He held a secure tablet, his face grim.

"Boss. You need to see this."

Jackson took the tablet. On the screen was a black-and-white photo from 25 years ago. A beautiful woman—the Duchess of Montbert—was holding a baby girl.

The baby was wearing the silver locket. The same one Serenity wore today.

"Her name was Princess Aurelia," Luke explained. "According to official records, she died alongside her parents in a suspicious palace fire twenty-five years ago. No bodies were found, but the Kingdom declared them dead."

"Who became the ruler after them?" Jackson asked sharply.

"The Duke's younger brother, Grand Duke Stefan," Luke swiped to the next photo. It showed a man with cold, cruel eyes. "He took over the throne immediately. Since then, the Dukedom has been under his iron rule."

Jackson closed his eyes, tapping his fingers on the desk.

"It wasn't a fire," Jackson whispered. "It was a coup."

He stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the dark garden where Serenity was sleeping safely.

"Someone smuggled the baby out to save her," Jackson concluded. "They dropped her at an orphanage in America to hide her from Stefan."

"Sir," Luke lowered his voice. "If Serenity is really Princess Aurelia... she is the rightful heir to the Dukedom. Grand Duke Stefan is holding a stolen throne."

"Which means," Jackson’s eyes snapped open, freezing cold. "If Stefan finds out she is alive, he will send assassins to finish the job."

Luke nodded. "Should we stop the investigation? It's dangerous."

"No," Jackson turned around. "Serenity has been called an orphan her whole life. She thinks she was unwanted. She deserves to know that her parents didn't abandon her... they died trying to protect her."

"Prepare the private jet," Jackson ordered. "We are not going to Montbert yet. But I want a DNA sample from the surviving relatives. We need proof before we start a war."

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away. The Kingdom of Montbert.

Inside a luxurious but gloomy palace, an old man sat on a velvet chair. He was Grand Duke Stefan. Though aging, he still looked formidable.

His butler walked in with a trembling hand, holding a satellite phone.

"Your Highness... our spies in America flagged something."

"America?" Stefan frowned. "What is it?"

"A wedding news report," the butler showed him a photo. It was the photo of Serenity coming out of the bridal shop, the silver locket glinting on her neck.

Stefan grabbed the phone. He stared at the face—a face that looked exactly like the woman he killed twenty-five years ago.

His hand crushed the phone screen.

"A ghost," Stefan hissed. "The little brat survived."

"What shall we do, Highness?" the butler asked. "She is marrying Jackson Sterling. He is a powerful man."

"Powerful? He is a businessman," Stefan sneered. "I am a ruler. In this game of thrones, money means nothing against absolute power."

Stefan stood up, walking to the fireplace. He looked at the painting of his dead brother above it.

"I burned the palace down once to get this crown," Stefan muttered darkly. "I don't mind burning down New York to keep it."

He turned to his butler.

"Send The Viper. Tell him to go to New York. It seems my niece needs a tragic accident... just like her parents."

Back in New York. The Villa.

Serenity woke up from a nightmare. In her dream, she was wrapped in a blanket, surrounded by flames and screaming.

"Serenity?"

Jackson was by her side instantly, holding her hand. He hadn't changed clothes.

"Jackson..." Serenity panted, sweating. "I had a bad dream."

"It's okay. You're safe," Jackson kissed her forehead. But his eyes were serious.

"Serenity," he said gently. "We found something. About your locket."

Serenity sat up, her heart pounding. "What is it? Did my parents... abandon me?"

"No," Jackson cupped her face, looking deep into her eyes. "They loved you. They saved you."

He took a deep breath.

"You are not just Serenity Lewis. Your real name is Aurelia. And you... are a Princess."

Serenity stared at him. The room spun.

Orphan. Princess. Murder.

Her life was about to change forever.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white.
