Chapter Four: The Truth Between Them

For five years, Elena Carter had imagined this moment.

Not exactly like this.

Not inside a billionaire's office.

Not with Damien Ashford looking at her like he was searching for a missing piece of himself.

And definitely not with him asking the one question she had spent years preparing herself to answer.

Is Noah my son?

The room suddenly felt too small.

Elena stared at Damien, trying to understand how they had gone from strangers to standing on the edge of a truth that could change everything.

Her first instinct was to leave.

To protect Noah.

To protect herself.

But her feet refused to move.

"Why are you asking me that?" she finally whispered.

Damien's expression remained unreadable, but his eyes betrayed the conflict inside him.

"Because I need to know."

Elena laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

"You need to know?"

Her voice became sharper.

"Five years ago, I needed to know where you were. I needed to know why you never came back. I needed to know why the man who promised me everything disappeared without a word."

Damien went still.

The accusation should have angered him.

Instead, it felt like a punishment he deserved.

Because no matter what the truth was, he had hurt her.

"I don't remember."

The words left his mouth quietly.

Elena looked at him.

For a moment, anger disappeared.

Only confusion remained.

"What?"

Damien looked away briefly.

"Five years ago, I was involved in an accident."

She frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?"

"My memory was affected."

Silence.

Elena stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I expect you to believe that I am trying to understand something I lost."

His voice was controlled, but there was something beneath it.

Frustration.

Pain.

Fear.

Elena noticed.

And she hated that part of her still recognized him.

Still cared.

"You don't remember me?"

Damien didn't answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

A bitter smile touched her lips.

"Of course."

She picked up her bag.

"I should have known."

"Elena."

Hearing her name stopped her.

Not because it was special.

Because of the way he said it.

Like he was trying to remember how it felt.

She turned back.

"Do not involve my son in whatever confusion you have."

Damien's expression changed.

Not anger.

Something else.

Concern.

"I would never hurt him."

"You don't know him."

"No."

His voice softened.

"But I want to."

Those words affected her more than she wanted them to.

Because for years, she had imagined Noah meeting his father.

She had imagined anger.

Rejection.

Pain.

She never imagined Damien looking at her son with genuine interest.

"I need time," she said.

Damien nodded.

For once, he didn't push.

"Take it."

Elena walked away.

But neither of them noticed the person standing outside the office.

Listening.

Watching.

And holding a phone with a message already typed.

Damien Ashford knows about the child.

---

That evening, Elena sat beside Noah's bed.

He was asleep, his small hand wrapped around the corner of his blanket.

She watched him quietly.

She had always wondered if she made the right choice.

Keeping Noah away from Damien.

Raising him alone.

Carrying the burden herself.

But what choice did she have?

She had searched for Damien.

She had tried to find him.

She had discovered nothing.

A child needed stability.

Not a father who might disappear again.

Her phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Elena frowned.

She opened it.

Her blood ran cold.

You should have stayed away from Ashford.

She stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

You made a mistake bringing that child into his life.

Her breathing became shallow.

Someone knew.

Someone knew about Noah.

She immediately looked toward her sleeping son.

Fear moved through her body.

Not for herself.

Never for herself.

For him.

---

Across the city, Damien stood in the underground parking garage of Ashford Tower.

His driver had already left.

He needed silence.

He needed answers.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

"Did you find anything?"

There was hesitation on the other end.

Damien noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

"I accessed the old accident records."

"And?"

"They were altered."

Damien's jaw tightened.

"Altered?"

"Yes. Some files were removed. The investigation report was changed after the original submission."

A cold feeling settled over him.

Someone had not only hidden Elena.

They had hidden the accident.

"Who had access?"

Marcus paused.

"Only a few people."

Damien waited.

"Your family."

The word hit harder than expected.

His family.

The people he trusted.

The people who stood beside him after the accident.

The people who told him he had imagined the things he couldn't remember.

Damien looked up at the dark building above him.

For years, he believed losing his memories was an accident.

Now he wasn't sure anymore.

---

The next morning, Elena arrived at Ashford Tower with one purpose.

She needed answers.

She couldn't pretend everything was normal anymore.

She couldn't keep Noah's existence hidden while someone was threatening them.

The moment she entered the building, she saw Damien waiting.

As if he had expected her.

"You received a message."

It wasn't a question.

Elena stopped.

"How do you know?"

"Because someone sent one to me too."

Her eyes widened.

"What did it say?"

Damien handed her his phone.

She read the message.

Forget the woman. Forget the child. Or you will lose everything.

Elena looked up.

For the first time, they weren't enemies.

They were facing the same threat.

"Who would do this?"

Damien's expression darkened.

"I don't know."

Then he looked directly at her.

"But I intend to find out."

Before Elena could respond, Damien's phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

"What happened?"

He listened silently.

Then:

"Send me the location."

He ended the call.

"What is it?" Elena asked.

Damien looked at her.

"The hospital."

Her heart dropped.

"What about the hospital?"

His voice was low.

"Someone accessed Noah's medical records."

Elena went pale.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about the past.

Someone was coming after their future.

  • Pregnant With the Billionaire's Forgotten Baby   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED SIX: EPILOGUE — THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED

Two years later, the house with the tree was no longer temporary.Noah was seven, taller, still serious when the situation required it, and permanently marked by a small scar on his left knee from a playground fall that had required nothing more dramatic than ice and a story about bravery. He left for school each morning with a backpack that always seemed to contain one more rock or drawing than it had the day before. Elena walked him to the corner on most days. Damien took the other days. The negotiation over whose turn it was had become one of the quiet, recurring jokes of the household. The legal work had finished in stages. Noah’s name and parental rights were settled without spectacle. Crowe received a sentence that would keep him out of any medical setting for the rest of his working life. The independent review of Ashford Group produced resignations, financial restatements, and a long public acknowledgment of failures that could not be softened. Damien remained with the company

  • Pregnant With the Billionaire's Forgotten Baby   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED FIVE: THE THURSDAY THAT HELD

Thursday arrived the way ordinary days were supposed to arrive—without negotiation.Noah woke early and announced that the school visit required his blue shirt because it was the one that made him look serious. Elena found the shirt, helped him with the buttons he still occasionally mismatched, and did not correct him when he practiced introducing himself in the mirror. Damien watched from the doorway of the bedroom and felt the quiet force of the moment settle in his chest: a five-year-old preparing for a classroom instead of another extraction route. The elementary school near the old apartment was a low brick building with a fenced playground and a front office that smelled of paper and floor polish. They were received without ceremony. The enrollment officer reviewed Noah’s birth certificate and immunization record, noted the current temporary address, and explained the fall term schedule in the practical language of someone who had done this for hundreds of children. Noah sat on

  • Pregnant With the Billionaire's Forgotten Baby   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED FOUR: THE DAYS THAT BEGAN TO STAY

The second morning without alerts felt less provisional than the first.Damien woke to the sound of Noah talking to himself in the kitchen, an elaborate monologue about the rules of a game that required three players and a tree. Elena’s quieter responses floated under it. For a long moment Damien remained still and let the ordinary noise of the house reach him without the old instinct to translate every sound into risk assessment. The instinct was still present, but it no longer arrived first. He rose and joined them. Breakfast was already in progress—toast, fruit, the residual pancakes from the day before that Noah had insisted should not be wasted. Elena handed Damien a coffee without comment. Their fingers touched briefly on the mug. The contact no longer felt like a question. After breakfast Elena raised the school enrollment the way she raised most practical matters: directly, without ceremony.“I called the elementary near the old apartment,” she said while Noah was occupied wit

  • Pregnant With the Billionaire's Forgotten Baby   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED THREE: THE MORNING AFTER THE LAST PAPER

Morning arrived without a single alert.Damien woke to the sound of Noah’s bare feet on the floorboards and the low clink of a bowl being set on the kitchen table. For a few seconds he lay still, waiting for the familiar tightening in his chest that had accompanied every previous dawn—the check of the perimeter status, the mental inventory of exits, the residual calculation of residual risk. It did not come with the same force. The operational phase was finished. Gabriel’s final status line from the night before still held.He rose and found Elena already in the kitchen, hair loosely tied, sleeves pushed up, watching Noah negotiate a bottle of syrup with careful seriousness. A stack of pancakes sat on a plate between them. The ordinary domesticity of the scene landed with a weight he had not expected.Noah looked up. “You said pancakes.”“I did.” Damien sat across from him. Elena set a second plate down without comment and poured coffee into two mugs. Their fingers brushed when she ha

  • Pregnant With the Billionaire's Forgotten Baby   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED TWO: THE ENVELOPE WITH HER NAME

Damien did not bring Margaret Ellis to the house. He met the intercept team one block outside the outer screen, in the neutral space of a quiet side street under the last of the daylight. Two of Gabriel’s people stood at a measured distance. Margaret Ellis waited on the sidewalk with her hands visible and empty except for a single sealed envelope. She was a woman in her mid-forties with the composed posture of someone who had spent years managing other people’s documents. She did not look surprised to see him.“Mr. Ashford,” she said. “Thank you for not making this louder than it needed to be.”Damien stopped a few feet from her. “You asked for me by name. You have an envelope for Elena Carter. Explain both.”Margaret glanced once at the operators, then back at him. “I was a paralegal at the firm that handled the hospital authorizations after your accident. I filed the original medical releases. I saw the private notes that never went into the main archive. I also saw the secondary re

  • Pregnant With the Billionaire's Forgotten Baby   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED ONE: THE WOMAN FOUR MILES AWAY

Damien did not elevate the house posture. He sat with Gabriel’s report for several minutes after they returned, weighing the distance between a residual observer and an active threat. Margaret Ellis had no financial link to Richard’s off-book accounts. She had no criminal record. She had left the counsel’s firm six months after the accident and had not reappeared in any Ashford matter since. What she had done was watch the final document handoff, research the public trail, and live close enough that the overlap could not be ignored.Elena waited until Noah was occupied with a puzzle at the low table before she asked the practical question.“How do you want to handle her?”“Quietly,” Damien said. “No confrontation at her address. No visible pressure. Gabriel will map her recent movements and any remaining professional contacts. If she’s simply a former employee who recognized a name from old files and followed the public story out of personal interest, the trail will show it. If there’
