Ashley’s POV
“You have been shortlisted for the Heirs Program.” I was doomscrolling through P*******t, searching for the perfect dress for my date night, when the text appeared across my phone screen. I stared at it for a few seconds, blinked, then read it again, just to make sure I hadn’t somehow misunderstood what I was seeing. “You have been shortlisted for the Heirs Program. What heir program?” Yes, I had been applying for some jobs lately, but I was almost certain I had never applied for anything called the Heirs Program. So what was happening? More importantly, what did Heirs Program even mean? I immediately opened G****e, because obviously that was the logical thing to do when a completely random organization decided to send you a suspicious text message. Then, because apparently G****e alone wasn’t enough to satisfy my increasingly suspicious brain, I checked AI too. The results were… interesting, to say the least. Entrepreneurship program. Leadership program. Something about succession. And, somehow, even a surrogacy setup. A surrogacy setup? I stared at the screen in disbelief. “What the hell?” You know what? I needed someone who actually knew what they were talking about, and I knew exactly who to ask. Josh. My boyfriend. If there was anyone who could possibly decipher whatever bizarre, elite-sounding nonsense this was, it was him. Josh came from one of those families—the kind of families people wrote articles about, the kind whose names opened doors before they even knocked. He was a chaebol kid, and he definitely knew someone who could explain what the hell an Heirs Program was. I dropped him a message because Josh hated calls. He was the kind of person who could see an incoming call and stare at his phone like it had personally offended him. Texting was usually the safest option unless I wanted to hear him complain about how unnecessary phone calls were. Nothing. I checked again, but the message hadn’t gone through. Okay, maybe it was a network issue. I tried again after another thirty minutes, but it was still the same thing. That was strange. I decided to call him. It would be faster anyway, and I could just apologize afterward for calling when I knew he hated it. I pressed his name and lifted the phone to my ear. A few seconds later, the call ended. Number not reachable. Same thing. I tried one more time, and this time I was met with that annoyingly calm female robotic voice telling me the number was unreachable. “Urgh.” I dropped the phone onto my bed, feeling my frustration grow. And unfortunately, my overthinking mind had decided this was the perfect time to start creating stories about everything. Maybe his phone was dead. Maybe his network was terrible. Maybe he was sleeping. Then I remembered that he had told me yesterday that he was coming down with a cold. My stomach tightened. What if it was worse now? What if something had happened? I picked up my phone again and stared at his name for a few seconds, but there were still no new messages. I decided I wasn’t going to sit in my room imagining every possible disaster while waiting for my boyfriend to magically become reachable. I was going to his house. Because apparently, worrying from the comfort of my bedroom was no longer an option. By the time I got to his house, my mind had already created approximately seventeen different disasters, and none of them were particularly helpful. The front door was locked. Okay. He was probably at home. Maybe he was sleeping. Maybe he had taken some medication and knocked himself out. Maybe I stopped myself. Enough. I knew the code. Well… technically, I didn’t know the code. I had accidentally figured it out. I’d once watched him punching it in when he thought I wasn’t paying attention, and I had peeped over his shoulder. Apparently, my brain had decided that information was worth storing forever. So, yes. The code was 1499. I entered it, and the lock clicked. “Thank God.” The door swung open, and I stepped inside. “Josh?” The house was eerily quiet. I closed the door behind me and looked around, suddenly feeling the first real knot of worry settle in my stomach. “Josh?” No response. “Josh, are you here?” Nothing. The silence suddenly felt wrong. Too wrong. I rushed upstairs, calling his name as I went. “Josh!” My footsteps echoed through the hallway, but there was still no response. Why wasn’t he responding? Was he really not home? But if he wasn’t home, why was his phone unreachable? And why hadn’t my messages gone through? I reached the top of the stairs, my breathing already uneven, and looked toward his master bedroom. I walked toward the door, my heart pounding harder with every step. I reached for the handle and pushed the door open. And then I saw him. For a second, I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even process what I was looking at. My entire world seemed to stop as I stood there, frozen in the doorway, staring at the person I loved. And suddenly, that stupid text on my phone, the one about the Heirs Program, was the last thing on my mind.Ashley POV I walked into the room with my fingers tightening around the hem of the towel. The first thing I noticed was the examination bed. The second was the woman standing beside it in a white coat. A female doctor. Thank goodness. At least there was that. “Lie down,” she instructed. I climbed onto the bed, suddenly very aware of how exposed I was. The doctor picked up a pair of gloves and glanced at the file beside her. “Spread your legs.” I hesitated for barely a second before obeying. She began by asking a few questions about my medical history, whether I had any known allergies, previous surgeries, reproductive health issues, or a history of sexually transmitted infections. Her tone was clipped, and she barely looked at me while I answered. After that came the blood samples, which, apparently, would be used to screen for infections and assess my general health. She explained that I would also need an ultrasound to examine my reproductive organs and that further fertil
Ashley POV Josh had said the program paid well. Whatever else he’d done, whatever his reasons for submitting my name, he’d clearly believed the financial compensation was worth mentioning. And if there was even a chance that the program could help me raise the money my brother needed, could I really afford to ignore it? I looked down at my phone. My thumb hovered over the screen. I didn’t know what the program involved. I didn’t know what it would ask of me, what I’d be expected to do, or whether the money would be enough. I knew nothing. But for the first time since leaving Josh’s house, I had something resembling a direction. And right now, that was going to have to be enough.I opened the message and typed a quick reply.Thank you. What’s the next step? I just hoped I wasn’t too late to reply and that they would still consider me. I said a little prayer to the universe, hoping I hadn’t lost my last chance before I even got to try.I took a bus home and resisted th
Ashley POV I pressed my forehead against the cool window and watched the streets pass by. My brother couldn’t afford to wait for me to get over a heartbreak. Neither could I afford to fall apart. By the time I arrived at St. Mike Hospital, I’d managed to convince myself that everything would somehow work out. Not because I had a plan. I just didn’t have the luxury of entertaining the alternative. I headed straight to Dr. Hart’s office and knocked. “Come in.” I opened the door. “Hi, Doc.” He looked up from his desk and removed his glasses. “Ashley. It’s nice to see you again.” “I wish I could say the same to you.” He laughed. “Wow. Is that how you greet someone who’s been taking care of your brother for five years?” “Sorry, Doctor. I’m going through a lot. Please forgive me.” “Of course.” His smile softened as he studied my face. “What’s wrong? Why do you look so sad?” “It’s nothing much, honestly.” He raised an eyebrow. I sighed. “Okay, fine. It’s a lot, actually,
Ashley’s POV I almost ignored the call. Honestly, the last thing I wanted was to speak to anyone. I didn’t have the energy to explain why I was crying, and I certainly wasn’t in the mood to pretend that everything was fine. I pulled it out of my bag and answered without checking the caller ID. “Hello, it’s Ashley here.” “Good afternoon. This is Dr. Hart calling from the hospital.” I straightened instinctively. The hospital. My brother. Every other thought in my head immediately took a back seat. “Good afternoon, Doctor.” “We have some good news. Your brother has finally gotten a bone marrow donor.” I stopped walking. “What?” “A donor has been found, Ashley. We can proceed with the next stage of the process, but there are some financial requirements we need to discuss.” Hope. After five years of appointments, tests, waiting, and conversations that seemed to lead nowhere, a donor had finally been found. My eyes filled with tears again, but this time, th
Ashley’s POV“JOSH!”Josh froze.Amy didn’t.That was the first thing I noticed, even through the ringing in my ears. My boyfriend was in bed with my best friend, and Amy had the audacity to look mildly inconvenienced by my presence. They were kissing. Passionately. Amy was straddling Josh, her hands tangled in his hair, while his arms were wrapped around her waist. They looked comfortable. Familiar.Like this wasn’t the first time.My knees gave way before my brain could make sense of what I was seeing. I landed on the floor, gripping the doorframe as though it were the only thing keeping me from completely falling apart.“Josh.” My voice came out smaller this time. “What the fuck is happening here?”He looked at me.No panic. No guilt. Not even the decency to look embarrassed.“What does it seem like?”For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.“What?”“You heard me.”I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh and tell me this was some elaborate joke.“Josh, why?” My voice cracked. “Why
