I smiled so widely my cheeks started to hurt. “Thank you so much. I’m really glad I made it.” I was so excited that I actually had to caution myself. Ashley, calm down. You haven’t even started anything yet. But honestly, who could blame me? After everything that had happened, things were finally beginning to look up. “Now,” one of the women said, stepping forward with a folder in her hand, “let’s go over the terms of your contract so you understand exactly what will be expected of you.” I straightened my spine. “First, you’ll be moving into the family residence tomorrow. You’ll be staying there for the duration of the arrangement.” I blinked. The family residence? As in a billionaire’s mansion? I was sorry, but was that really necessary? I thought all I had to do was show up at the hospital, get the procedure done, become pregnant, and carry the baby in peace. I didn’t realise the package included moving into somebody else’s house, too. What was I supposed to do there? Sit in their living room and admire their expensive furniture? Well, it wasn’t as if I had a better offer waiting for me. I needed the money, and I was willing to go through a lot to get it. Besides, how bad could it possibly be? I decided not to answer that question. My imagination had a habit of making things worse. “The next stage involves the IVF process,” the woman continued, drawing my attention back to her. “You’ll begin fertility medication to stimulate your ovaries to produce eggs. The medical team will monitor your response through blood tests and ultrasound scans. When the eggs are ready, they’ll be retrieved in a minor procedure.” Okay. Eggs. I could work with that. “The eggs will then be fertilised with sperm from the intended father in a laboratory. The resulting embryos will be monitored as they develop, and the doctors will determine which embryo is suitable for transfer.” I nodded again, trying my best to look like I understood everything. “After that, an embryo will be transferred into your uterus using a thin catheter. It’s a relatively straightforward procedure, and it usually doesn’t require anaesthesia. You’ll be given instructions on what to do afterwards, and a blood test will be scheduled to determine whether the transfer has resulted in a pregnancy.” I stared at her. She stared back. I stared at her some more. “Wow,” I blurted out. I hadn’t even realised I’d said it aloud until the woman paused. Because, wow. There was the medication, the egg retrieval, the fertilisation, the embryo development, the transfer, and then waiting to find out if it had worked. And here I was, thinking the entire thing involved one hospital visit and a little patience. My goodness. “Of course, IVF doesn’t guarantee a successful pregnancy on the first attempt,” she added. “The doctors will explain the possible risks, side effects, and any additional procedures that may become necessary. You’ll also receive regular medical care throughout the pregnancy if the transfer is successful.” I swallowed. A lot. This was a lot. But I could wing it. Well, perhaps wing it wasn’t the best expression to use when doctors were involved, but you understood what I meant. I could handle it. I had to. “The medical team will guide you through each stage,” she assured me. “You’ll simply need to follow their instructions and attend all scheduled appointments.” “Okay,” I said, nodding slowly. “I understand.” I hoped I did, anyway. “There is one more condition concerning the heir.” I looked up. “The contract requires you to spend at least eight hours a day in close proximity to him. This will be five days a week, and your designated location will be the hospital.” I frowned. “Sorry, what do you mean?” “You’ll be expected to spend eight hours a day with the heir at the hospital, five days a week.” I stared at her. Eight hours? Every day? Five days a week? With a man I hadn’t even met? “Why?” I asked before I could stop myself.Skyler I had been following the selection process rather closely, mostly because I wanted to know exactly what my mother was planning. If she was determined to go ahead with this ridiculous arrangement, I wanted to know who she intended to bring into my life. More importantly, I wanted to know whether anyone involved in the programme had connections to the people who had orchestrated my accident. I was still investigating an attempted murder. I had no intention of allowing my mother’s well-funded reproductive experiment to become another avenue through which someone could get close enough to finish what they had started. So, I watched. I paid little attention to the medical appointments beyond the information I considered necessary. I was not particularly interested in studying a room full of women, and I certainly had no intention of developing an interest in any of them. I was married. Happily, as far as I was concerned. And I was still very much in love with my wife
SkylerNow, before you misunderstand that last statement, let me make something clear.Bri Tylan is the love of my life. She has been for as long as I can remember.Bri and I have known each other since we were teenagers. We grew up as neighbours, and our families were familiar with each other long before either of us understood what it meant to fall in love. Bri practically had unrestricted access to our home. She would walk in without announcing herself, raid our kitchen, complain about whatever was bothering her and somehow convince everyone that she had done us a favour simply by showing up.I used to pretend she was a nuisance. She knew I was lying. We became friends first. Then best friends. The sort of friends who knew each other’s habits, fears and embarrassing childhood stories. She knew when I was angry even when I said nothing. She knew when I needed space and when I needed someone to stay. When things were difficult, Bri was there. When I had something worth celebrating,
SkylerMy name is Skyler Tylan.I’m sure you’ve heard of me by now. The comatose billionaire heir.An unfortunate accident. That’s what they’ve been calling it.Personally, I find the description rather amusing. There was nothing unfortunate about the timing. And I’m beginning to suspect there was very little accidental about it either. For the past three months, my life has been a series of carefully disguised warnings. A tyre bursting on a highway. Brake failure in a vehicle that had passed inspection less than twenty-four hours earlier. A security breach at one of our private residences. Minor incidents, individually speaking. The sort of things people dismiss as bad luck.I didn’t.When you’re preparing to assume control of one of the largest conglomerates in the world, you learn to pay attention to details other people overlook. Especially when those details keep appearing around you.Tylan Holdings was approaching a major succession announcement. The position of chairman was du
Ashley Oh, absolutely not.My brain finally sprang into action.Whatever else happened, I could not allow this situation to escalate before I explained myself.I had already signed a contract. I had accepted the money. Twenty-five million dollars had already entered my account, and a significant portion of it had gone towards Jason’s treatment.I could not afford to have somebody misunderstand my presence, report me to the hospital, and create a scandal before I had even completed the first week of this arrangement.I took a small step forward.“Wait!”She paused and looked at me.I straightened.“I’m Ashley. I’m the hired surrogate.”Silence.For one beautiful, terrifying second, neither of us said anything. Then she gave a small nod.“So they’ve moved quickly already.”I wasn’t sure what to make of that response. There was no obvious shock. No dramatic gasp. No immediate demand for an explanation. She simply said it as though she’d expected something of the sort to happen eventuall
Ashley She laughed. Not a polite little laugh. Not the kind of laugh people gave when they were trying to be civil despite finding something amusing.No.She laughed hysterically.I stood there with the cloth still in my hand, watching her as though she’d suddenly started speaking a language I didn’t understand.“I’m sorry,” she said, still laughing. “Did you just ask me who I am?”Her eyes travelled from my face to Skyler, then back to me.“Me? You’re asking me who I am? A nobody is standing here kissing my comatose husband in his hospital room, and somehow, I’m the one who needs to introduce herself?”She laughed again, shaking her head in disbelief.“I guess this is the eighth wonder of the world, wouldn’t you agree, Miss?”I opened my mouth.Closed it.Opened it again.Nothing came out.Oh.Oh, wow.Okay.First of all, nobody was kissing anybody.Second of all, comatose husband?Third of all—I finally took a proper look at her. And, oh my God.Oh. My. God.She was a goddess.I w
AshleyI gathered the supplies I needed and washed my hands. Before yesterday, I hadn’t imagined that personal care would become a regular part of my daily routine. Now, apparently, it was part of my job description. Twice a day, I was expected to help clean a grown man who happened to be one of the richest people in the country. Life really did have a sense of humour. A questionable one, but still. I approached his bed and hesitated. “Okay, Skyler. I’m about to touch you now.” I paused. “Yes, I know. You can’t hear me. And no, I don’t know why I’m asking for permission from a man who can’t answer me. But I’ve watched enough Korean medical dramas to know that doctors announce what they’re about to do before they start poking people. So I’m following protocol.” I glanced at his face. “Except you’re not my patient, technically. You’re my employer. And you’re unconscious. This arrangement is getting more confusing by the day.” I exhaled. “Anyway, let’s just do this.” I began w
