Ashley

I dragged myself out of bed and walked to the door, wondering who had decided my sleep was a public inconvenience.

I opened it with a frown.

Of course.

The cold-faced woman.

“Hi,” I said.

“Good morning. Be ready in an hour. You have your first fertility appointment today.”

I stared at her. “Good morning to you too. To what do I owe this pleasure?”

“Your appointment. One hour, Ashley.”

And she walked away.

I slowly closed the door.

Oh, my God. These people would be the end of me.

Couldn’t I have one peaceful morning? Just one? I’d barely opened my eyes, and somebody was already scheduling my reproductive system.

I marched into the bathroom, muttering under my breath.

Was smiling against that woman’s personal beliefs? Had she signed a contract promising never to be pleasant? Because at this point, I was beginning to suspect she had.

I showered, dressed in something comfortable, and grabbed a quick breakfast. If I was going to have a medical procedure, I wasn’t about to arrive hungry and faint dramatically in front of strangers.

When I came downstairs, she was waiting beside the door.

“Are you ready?”

I smiled sweetly. “No. I’ve decided to run away and become a nun.”

She stared at me.

I stared back.

“Let’s go,” she said.

Naturally.

I followed her outside, mentally adding another item to my growing list of reasons to scream into a pillow.

“Do you have anything to say?” she asked as we approached the car.

Several things, actually. None of them suitable for polite company.

I smiled.

“Nothing.”

The fertility clinic surprised me.

I’d expected somewhere cold and intimidating, the kind of place where even the walls looked disappointed in you. Instead, the reception area had cream-coloured walls, comfortable chairs, large windows, and little potted plants arranged around the room. Soft instrumental music played in the background, and the air carried a faint lavender scent.

It was almost suspiciously peaceful.

I glanced around, wondering whether the building belonged to the same people who had apparently made it their mission to deprive me of sleep.

A nurse soon led us to the doctor’s office.

Dr. Bennett looked to be in his early forties. He wore a white coat over a pale blue shirt, and his glasses rested low on his nose as he reviewed my file. When he noticed us, he stood and offered me a welcoming smile.

“Good morning, Ashley. Please, have a seat.”

I sat opposite him, placing my handbag on my lap.

He introduced himself and explained that he would be overseeing my IVF treatment.

“Before we begin,” he said, “I want you to understand the process. If anything worries you or you don’t understand something, please ask. I don’t want you leaving here confused about your treatment.”

I immediately liked him a little.

Finally, somebody who understood that I was a human being and not an item on a checklist.

“Okay, Doctor. I might have a lot of questions.”

“That’s perfectly fine.”

He explained that the first stage of IVF was ovarian stimulation. Ordinarily, my ovaries would release one mature egg during a menstrual cycle, but the medication would encourage them to develop several follicles at once. Each follicle might contain an egg, although not every follicle would necessarily produce a mature one.

“The medication is usually administered through daily injections under the skin,” he continued. “Stimulation commonly lasts around eight to fourteen days, depending on how your body responds. We’ll monitor you with ultrasound scans and blood tests, adjusting the medication when necessary.”

I blinked.

“Daily injections?”

“Yes.”

“As in, every single day?”

He smiled. “Every day during the stimulation phase.”

I leaned back in my chair.

Fantastic. Apparently, I’d signed up for a job that came with a subscription to needles.

“And what happens after that?”

“Once the follicles are ready, we’ll administer a trigger injection to help the eggs complete their final maturation. Egg retrieval is generally scheduled about thirty-four to thirty-six hours later. We’ll collect the eggs through the vagina using an ultrasound-guided needle, under sedation or anaesthesia, depending on the protocol.”

I stared at him.

Through the vagina.

With a needle.

I pressed my lips together.

“Okay.”

He continued explaining that the eggs would be fertilised in the laboratory using the intended father’s sperm. The resulting embryos would be monitored for several days before a suitable embryo was selected for transfer. A blood test would usually be performed about ten to fourteen days after the transfer to determine whether pregnancy had occurred.

“So, this isn’t something that happens in one day?”

“No. The entire process takes time, and pregnancy isn’t guaranteed on the first attempt.”

My fingers tightened around my handbag strap.

Not guaranteed.

I’d known there were no guarantees when I signed the contract, but hearing it from a doctor made the reality feel different.

“What if something goes wrong?” I asked.

Dr. Bennett put down my file.

“What specifically are you worried about, Ashley?”

I hesitated.

“What if this whole process kills me?”

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Not bad

Skyler I had been following the selection process rather closely, mostly because I wanted to know exactly what my mother was planning. If she was determined to go ahead with this ridiculous arrangement, I wanted to know who she intended to bring into my life. More importantly, I wanted to know whether anyone involved in the programme had connections to the people who had orchestrated my accident. I was still investigating an attempted murder. I had no intention of allowing my mother’s well-funded reproductive experiment to become another avenue through which someone could get close enough to finish what they had started. So, I watched. I paid little attention to the medical appointments beyond the information I considered necessary. I was not particularly interested in studying a room full of women, and I certainly had no intention of developing an interest in any of them. I was married. Happily, as far as I was concerned. And I was still very much in love with my wife

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   IVF

SkylerNow, before you misunderstand that last statement, let me make something clear.Bri Tylan is the love of my life. She has been for as long as I can remember.Bri and I have known each other since we were teenagers. We grew up as neighbours, and our families were familiar with each other long before either of us understood what it meant to fall in love. Bri practically had unrestricted access to our home. She would walk in without announcing herself, raid our kitchen, complain about whatever was bothering her and somehow convince everyone that she had done us a favour simply by showing up.I used to pretend she was a nuisance. She knew I was lying. We became friends first. Then best friends. The sort of friends who knew each other’s habits, fears and embarrassing childhood stories. She knew when I was angry even when I said nothing. She knew when I needed space and when I needed someone to stay. When things were difficult, Bri was there. When I had something worth celebrating,

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Unfortunately

SkylerMy name is Skyler Tylan.I’m sure you’ve heard of me by now. The comatose billionaire heir.An unfortunate accident. That’s what they’ve been calling it.Personally, I find the description rather amusing. There was nothing unfortunate about the timing. And I’m beginning to suspect there was very little accidental about it either. For the past three months, my life has been a series of carefully disguised warnings. A tyre bursting on a highway. Brake failure in a vehicle that had passed inspection less than twenty-four hours earlier. A security breach at one of our private residences. Minor incidents, individually speaking. The sort of things people dismiss as bad luck.I didn’t.When you’re preparing to assume control of one of the largest conglomerates in the world, you learn to pay attention to details other people overlook. Especially when those details keep appearing around you.Tylan Holdings was approaching a major succession announcement. The position of chairman was du

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Hired surrogate

Ashley Oh, absolutely not.My brain finally sprang into action.Whatever else happened, I could not allow this situation to escalate before I explained myself.I had already signed a contract. I had accepted the money. Twenty-five million dollars had already entered my account, and a significant portion of it had gone towards Jason’s treatment.I could not afford to have somebody misunderstand my presence, report me to the hospital, and create a scandal before I had even completed the first week of this arrangement.I took a small step forward.“Wait!”She paused and looked at me.I straightened.“I’m Ashley. I’m the hired surrogate.”Silence.For one beautiful, terrifying second, neither of us said anything. Then she gave a small nod.“So they’ve moved quickly already.”I wasn’t sure what to make of that response. There was no obvious shock. No dramatic gasp. No immediate demand for an explanation. She simply said it as though she’d expected something of the sort to happen eventuall

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Eighth wonder

Ashley She laughed. Not a polite little laugh. Not the kind of laugh people gave when they were trying to be civil despite finding something amusing.No.She laughed hysterically.I stood there with the cloth still in my hand, watching her as though she’d suddenly started speaking a language I didn’t understand.“I’m sorry,” she said, still laughing. “Did you just ask me who I am?”Her eyes travelled from my face to Skyler, then back to me.“Me? You’re asking me who I am? A nobody is standing here kissing my comatose husband in his hospital room, and somehow, I’m the one who needs to introduce herself?”She laughed again, shaking her head in disbelief.“I guess this is the eighth wonder of the world, wouldn’t you agree, Miss?”I opened my mouth.Closed it.Opened it again.Nothing came out.Oh.Oh, wow.Okay.First of all, nobody was kissing anybody.Second of all, comatose husband?Third of all—I finally took a proper look at her. And, oh my God.Oh. My. God.She was a goddess.I w

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Who are you

AshleyI gathered the supplies I needed and washed my hands. Before yesterday, I hadn’t imagined that personal care would become a regular part of my daily routine. Now, apparently, it was part of my job description. Twice a day, I was expected to help clean a grown man who happened to be one of the richest people in the country. Life really did have a sense of humour. A questionable one, but still. I approached his bed and hesitated. “Okay, Skyler. I’m about to touch you now.” I paused. “Yes, I know. You can’t hear me. And no, I don’t know why I’m asking for permission from a man who can’t answer me. But I’ve watched enough Korean medical dramas to know that doctors announce what they’re about to do before they start poking people. So I’m following protocol.” I glanced at his face. “Except you’re not my patient, technically. You’re my employer. And you’re unconscious. This arrangement is getting more confusing by the day.” I exhaled. “Anyway, let’s just do this.” I began w
