Elena’s POV

The city was different here.

Not as loud, not as sharp as the one I left behind. The streets were calmer, the skyline softer, the pace of life slower. It wasn’t home, but it was safe. And for now, that was enough.

Elijah and I had rented a modest apartment close to the hospital where he’d found work. He was thriving under his new supervisor, his dedication earning him respect almost instantly. I was proud of him. Watching him walk into that building each morning gave me hope that maybe, just maybe, we could build something new here.

As for me, I had taken a job in the hospitality sector. It wasn’t glamorous, not compared to the wealth and opulence I had once been surrounded by, but it was honest work. I started as a junior manager in one of the city’s most luxurious and busiest hotels. The hours were long, the demands high, but I liked it. The structure steadied me. The smiles of satisfied guests reminded me I still had something to offer.

And then there was the baby.

  • Pregnant for the Heartless Billionaire   144 The Temptation of Power

Elena’s POV Raymond didn’t move for a while. He just sat there, his hands steepled, his shoulders tense, his eyes fixed on me as though he were observing something volatile, something new, something dangerous. Something that could either save the Rothschild empire… or burn it completely to the ground.“You’ve thought this through,” he said at last, his voice low.“I have.”He leaned back in the chair, which creaked softly under the strain, or maybe under the weight of the thoughts stacking behind his gaze. He studied me like a man trying to decide whether the person in front of him was still the woman he knew… or someone else entirely.“If we can reduce James’s holdings,” he admitted, “it would shift control significantly back to our side.” He paused. “But how exactly do you plan to do that in detail?”I hesitated for only a heartbeat, then I told him.“We crash the company value.”He blinked. Once. Twice. Then his brows shot up.“Crash it?”“Temporarily,” I clarified, my tone cal

  • Pregnant for the Heartless Billionaire   143 The Risk of Calm

Elena’s POV By the time the sun set over Evercrest the next day, it had been almost forty-eight hours since the board meeting, and I still hadn’t slept properly. My body felt like it had been hollowed out and stuffed with nerves and caffeine. But for the first time since the accident, there was light, fragile, trembling, barely holding its shape, but light all the same.Damien was in the clear. The doctors said it with cautious optimism, as if afraid the universe would punish them for hope. He hadn’t woken up yet, his eyelids still lay heavy, unmoving, but his body was out of immediate danger. His vitals were strong, stable, consistent enough to move him from the ICU to a private ward.Stable. That word had wrapped itself around my ribs and refused to let go.When I stepped into his new room, it felt less like a battlefield and more like a sanctuary. The machines still hummed, wires still connected him to life, and oxygen still hissed softly beside his bed, but this room had windows,

  • Pregnant for the Heartless Billionaire   142 The Waiting Room

Elena’s POV When I got home, I didn’t realise how exhausted I was until I shut the door behind me. The sound of the latch clicking into place felt too final, too heavy, like it was locking me into a silence I wasn’t prepared to face. All day, adrenaline had pushed me forward, through the board meeting, through James’s pathetic display of entitlement, through Isabelle’s public meltdown and humiliation. The news cameras, the reporters, the whispers… all of it had blurred into background noise. I had moved through every hour like a blade. Sharp. Controlled. Unshaking. But the moment that door closed, the blade dulled. The weight of the day settled into my bones, dragging every breath downward.I leaned against the wall for a moment, closing my eyes as the quiet wrapped itself around me. I wasn’t sure if the ache in my chest was grief, fear, or rage. Maybe all three. They swirled inside me like stormwater refusing to settle.Eventually, I pushed myself upright and walked to the bedroom.

  • Pregnant for the Heartless Billionaire   141 The Press and the Poison

Elena’s POVThe moment I stepped out of the boardroom, the air felt heavier, as though the walls themselves had absorbed every drop of tension that had spilled during the meeting.Raymond stayed a step behind me, Mathias beside him, the two lawyers already whispering about formal statements for the press. But before we even reached the elevator, a hand shot out and grabbed me.It was James. His grip was rough, almost violent, and my body reacted before my mind did, one of Adrian’s men instantly seized his wrist, twisting it off me.James winced and raised both hands in exaggerated surrender. “Alright, alright,” he said with a forced laugh. “Didn’t mean to scare the lady.”I smoothed my sleeve and looked at him coolly. “Then you shouldn’t have touched me.”His smile faltered, replaced by the glint of venom he didn’t bother to hide anymore. “You’ll regret this, Elena,” he said softly. “Damien couldn’t deal with me. What chance do you think you have? You’re nothing but a fly buzzing aroun

  • Pregnant for the Heartless Billionaire   140 The Turning Point

Elena’s POVThe meeting resumed after a tense silence. The board secretary read through the agenda, her voice steady, but everyone’s focus had already shifted, there would be no vote for chairman now. That item was struck off before she could even finish the first line.Jamie’s face tightened when Mathias crossed it out on the projector screen, his expression a mix of irritation and disbelief.“Moving on,” Mathias announced. “Next on the agenda, the proposed merger with the Reynolds Group.”The atmosphere thickened again. Jamie seized the moment, leaning forward like a man reclaiming ground.“Good,” he said, adjusting his tie. “Now, as I was saying before this… diversion, the Reynolds merger could be our saving grace. Let’s not pretend we don’t know where our local division stands. Production costs are up, profit margins are down, and our manufacturing units are operating below fifty percent capacity. We can’t keep relying on the international branches to carry our weight forever.”He

  • Pregnant for the Heartless Billionaire   139 The Boardroom Reckoning

Elena’s POVThe atmosphere in the boardroom was heavier than I’d expected. The moment Raymond and I walked in, all conversation stilled. Every seat was taken, a sea of tailored suits and wary eyes. And there, lounging comfortably in Damien’s chair, sat James Railey. My husband’s chair. His fingers drummed lazily on the armrest, his smirk wide enough to make my blood simmer. Isabelle sat two seats away, her chin raised, smugness radiating off her like expensive perfume.Mathias entered beside me with two lawyers in tow, their presence commanding immediate attention. Behind us, Raymond and two of Adrian’s men stood quietly by the door, their expressions unreadable.Jamie let out a small, amused laugh. “Well, this is unexpected,” he said, leaning back in the chair as though it were his throne. “Mrs. Rothschild… you aren’t part of this meeting.”A few chuckles rippled across the room, nervous, shallow laughter from those too spineless to pick a side yet.I said nothing. Instead, I walked
