Chapter 2

Author: No-Coriander
"These are my materials." I pulled the stack of papers out from Megan's bookshelf, confronting her at the same time.

She did not even look up. "You can't use them anymore, so I'm using them for you. You didn't get the recommendation anyway, so it would be a waste if we just left it there."

My fingers tightened around the papers, but I said nothing.

But what truly crossed the line for me was the day I came back to the dorm early.

The door was unlocked, and Megan was sitting in my chair as she went through my hard drive. My computer was switched on, and the screen showed the academic materials for another project. She was taking screenshots, page by page.

"What are you doing?" I stood in the doorway, my voice cold.

She lazily spun the chair around. "Just looking for some materials. Why are you so uptight?"

Then, she stood up and walked to my desk, tearing my dream university poster off the wall. She tore the poster in half, throwing it on the floor and stepping on it.

I had looked at it every night before going to sleep for three years…

"You think you deserve to go to this school?" She sneered.

I stared at the torn poster, and I could feel something inside of me crack.

That night, I pulled screenshots from the surveillance footage of Megan secretly using my meal card and hiding my math competition application form. After blocking out the private information, I posted them in the class group chat and demanded that she apologize and return everything within three days, or I would call the police.

After the message went out, the chat stayed silent for a moment.

Then, a message popped up.

Lily Smith, the department's admin, tagged me in the group: [@NellySullivan, you're slandering another student in the chat, and it's ruining the atmosphere in the college. Delete this immediately and make a public apology.]

I stared at the screen, sure I had read it wrong.

Then Megan sent me a private message. It was a string of smug reaction images, followed by one line: [My cousin works in the department. Do you really think you can beat me?]

I did not reply.

The next morning, I returned to the dorm and found that three months of research materials for the National Innovation Contest, which I had locked inside my drawer, were gone. I searched the whole dorm and finally found them in the hallway trash can. Every page had been torn to pieces.

Dawn Lynch, another of my dorm mates, saw me crouching there picking up the scraps. She sighed and said, "Megan threw them out this morning. She tore them up pretty thoroughly."

I crouched on the floor and picked them up, piece by piece.

Then, my phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down. It was an email from the Patent Office. The utility model patent I had spent half a year applying for had passed preliminary review, and the official certificate would be issued within three days.

Holding my phone, I crouched in front of the shredded paper and laughed.

Megan came out of the dorm still in her slippers. As she passed by the trash can, she stepped on the scraps on purpose. "Oh? Those were your prep materials for the contest? I thought they were just useless scrap paper, so I threw them out for you. No need to thank me."

I gathered the scraps and stood up before stuffing them all into a trash bag. Then I looked up at her. For the first time, I did not look away. "Megan, every piece of paper you stepped on will become evidence against you."

She paused, then laughed. "Trying to scare me? Is that all you can do?"

I did not argue.

Because she would know that not a word I said was a joke three days later.

On the day of the National Innovation Contest's defense segment for the university level, I realized I had left the USB drive with my slides in the dorm.

I called my roommate and asked her to bring it over. The other end went quiet for two seconds. "Megan already went to the venue with the drive. She said it was hers."

My heart sank.

By the time I reached the lecture room where the defense was taking place, Megan was already onstage. My presentation was projected clearly on the screen, and the first slide read, "Project lead, Megan Williams."

Half a year later. Central City, first snow. I sat in Professor Kyle's research lab. In front of me was a powerful workstation, and a section of code I had just finished writing was running on the screen. Outside the window, snowflakes drifted down, turning the whole campus white. My phone vibrated. It was a message from Dawn. [Nelly! It's snowing in Central City, right? Take a picture for me!] I took a photo of the scene outside the window and sent it to her. [It's so pretty!] Dawn replied to the photo. [Aren't you in Southton? Is it snowing there too?] I sent her a message. [Nope. It's raining now. So annoying!] She complained. I smiled and put down my phone. I was the only person in the lab. My seniors had all gone to eat, and I had said I wanted to adjust the code a little longer. Then, the door opened, and Professor Kyle walked in. "Nelly, you're still here?" He wore a dark gray jacket and held a thermos in his hand. More than half his hair was white, but h

After I finished tutoring Tessa, she said, "Nelly, you're really amazing. I want to learn from you." "You don't need to learn from me," I said. "Just walk your own path." She nodded and left with her laptop in her arms. I sat at my desk and opened the drawer. I had framed the taped-together poster and hung it on the wall above my bed. The tear marks were still there, but that made them stand out even more. I had placed the taped-together receipt under my pillow and put the broken water cup on the highest shelf of the bookcase. I no longer used it, but I could not bring myself to throw it away. My phone lit up. It was a voice message from my mother. "Sweetheart, did you get the beef jerky? You said it tasted good last time, so I made another five pounds." I smiled. "I got it, Mom. It tastes good. Stop making it, though. It's too heavy." "Too heavy? I'm happy to make it." As I laughed, my eyes became red again. - It was drizzling the day my official letter for the PhD

Then, Dawn's message asked me something I forgot: [By the way, are the results from your National Innovation competition out yet?] I was stunned for a moment and opened the contest's website. After my project was re-evaluated, it received the grand prize for the university stage and was recommended for the national stage. Megan's first prize had already been revoked. I sent the screenshot to Dawn. Dawn sent a long string of exclamation marks. [!!!!!!!!! Nelly, you're incredible!] I looked at the screen and smiled. Then I turned off my phone and continued reading my academic papers. The national stage would begin in two months. This time, nobody could steal what was mine. - The news about the national stage of the National Innovation Contest came a month later. My project had been selected not for first prize, but for the "Best Innovation Award". There were only two spots for the entire college. Dawn screamed in the dorm for a full minute. I covered my ears and l

I thought everything was over. But some people would never accept defeat. It happened on the seventh day after the grad school recommendation list was posted. I had just left the lab and was preparing to head to the cafeteria for lunch. When I reached the entrance of the college building, I saw a crowd gathered there. Someone was crying. Not crying quietly like a sob, but loud wailing that everyone could hear. "My daughter was bullied! That Nelly ruined her so badly she had to take a leave of absence! The university has to give me an explanation!" I stopped walking. A middle-aged woman stood at the entrance of the college building, wearing a dark red coat. Her hair was messy, and tears covered her face. She held up a printed sheet with a few large words on it: [Give my daughter justice!] It was Megan's mother. Megan stood beside her, head lowered. She held the corner of her mother's clothes and said quietly, "Mom, stop causing trouble here. Let's go back." "I'm not go

The next day, the list came out. My name was in the first column. [Nelly Sullivan, School of Information Technology and Engineering, direct PhD.] Dawn was the first to post in the group chat. [Congratulations, Nelly! You earned it!] Then came a long string of congratulations. Some of the people who had cursed me earlier sent private apologies, while others said sorry publicly in the group. I read a few, but did not reply. It was not that I held a grudge. It just felt unnecessary. The nightmare of the past three months had finally ended. - On the third day after the grad school recommendation list was posted again, Megan came to complete the paperwork for taking a leave of absence. She had already moved out of the dorm and was staying in a budget hotel near the university. I heard her mother had rushed over from their hometown and was helping her with all the procedures. At noon, when I was eating in the cafeteria, Dawn suddenly nudged me with her elbow. "Look. The e

Megan was also called in for questioning. While I waited in the hallway, I heard her voice from the conference room. One moment she was crying, the next she was shouting, and then she said, "I didn't know it was hers!" An hour later, she came out. Her eyes were red and swollen. When she saw me in the hallway, she froze, then lowered her head and hurried away. On the fifth day, the result came out. The class group chat received a long notice. [After a thorough investigation, Megan Williams has been found to have committed the following disciplinary violations:] [Firstly, she stole Nelly's original draft, changed it to her own name, and submitted it to fraudulently obtain eligibility for a grad school recommendation.] [Secondly, she publicly posted false information in the class group chat and maliciously slandered Nelly.] [Thirdly, she repeatedly took Nelly's materials for the National Innovation Contest and other academic materials without permission and destroyed them.]
