Chapter 5

Penulis: Rowena
I also wanted Felix to pin up my long hair with his hands that were made to write poetry.

At first, of course, he was unwilling. If I pushed him too far, he would make excuses to stay away from my manor for a few days.

He would never take more than three days, though. He would show up again, looking calm and indifferent. He would wear the sky-blue robes I picked for him, with the coronet I'd given him on his head and the pendant I'd gifted hanging at his waist.

Even just standing there quietly, his eyes as still as a deep well, he looked as handsome as if he were a masterpiece.

He wouldn't need to say anything, for I would instantly forgive him.

Man, beauty was a curse.

A banquet was held at the palace to welcome General Colson back in triumph.

I sat below Father. When I looked back, Felix was swallowed up by the crowd, his good looks completely lost in the sea of faces.

I was bored and meant to leave early, but the guest of honor hadn't even arrived yet. Father sat at the most prominent seat in the hall, not looking mad in the slightest.

Well, I sure was.

General Colson, whose name was Gerard Colson, had deep ties to the original princess of this world. They were childhood friends of a sort, but the princess turned into Gerard's shameless pursuer as they grew up.

He had a devastatingly handsome face and was highly skilled in martial arts, and his father was General Northguard, who watched the northern frontier. On paper, he was a good match for the princess.

Except he didn't want her.

To avoid the princess, Gerard had gone to the border to lead the troops in war. He'd stayed there for three years. Who would've known that he'd not only come back in one piece but would also be triumphant?

Now, what did that point to? It meant that the heavens were blind and that menaces lived forever.

I had all of the original princess' feelings and memories, so I didn't think much of Gerard right now. If not for how ridiculously good-looking he was in those memories, I wouldn't have come to this banquet at all.

But by now, I'd lost my patience. I excused myself and slipped out. Then, I sent a handmaiden to bring Felix over.

Even if he were used to my brazen ways, he was still utterly stunned when I pinned him against the rockery and kissed him.

He scowled, looking ashamed and angry. "Your Highness!"

I covered his mouth and giggled into his ear. "Keep quiet. Do you want people to hear us?"

Felix's breathing became ragged, and his gaze darkened.

That only thrilled me more. "Or do you want to be heard?"

Just then, voices drifted over from afar.

"I heard you had the princess thrown into a cell for… verbally harassing you the other day."

"That's my fault. It was just a misunderstanding."

"Ha, I figured. She used to chase me relentlessly, after all."

The other voice paused, then said, "But General Colson, that was three years ago."

It was Gerard and Rowan.

I frowned. Anyone else would be manageable, but being caught by those two would spell trouble.

Suddenly, the arm around my waist tightened. Then, Felix pressed his lips against mine in a fiery kiss. Unlike his usual soft, passive responses, he kissed me with fierce heat, like he wanted to devour me whole.

Was he out of his mind? Wasn't he afraid of being seen? I might act crazy most days, but even this was beyond my limit!

Gerard's and Rowan's footsteps drew closer. My scalp prickled, and my eyes kept darting to the side. The handmaiden was practically twitching as she threw me frantic looks.

I could see her perfectly fine, thank you very much. She was about to sprain her eyeballs. But Felix was the one kissing me!

The footsteps faded, and I was relieved.

I was about to discuss various kissing techniques and positions with Felix when a voice ground out through clenched teeth beside us. "Claire Sable!"

I stiffened and turned to see Rowan and Gerard. They'd somehow ended up right next to Felix and me. Their faces were cold as frost.

Well, this was awkward… so awkward that I blurted, "What a coincidence. Want to join us?"

Damn it! This was exactly the sort of nonsense that went on in the mind of a female protagonist of a spicy romance novel.

Extra: Rowan's POVI was furious. For the first time, I lost my gentlemanly composure and said some cutting words. But all Claire did was nod solemnly and acknowledge what I'd said.My world turned gray again.Later, I heard about Felix tutoring Claire. It seemed he'd accepted her offer.Ha! Such behavior was truly contemptible. So why… was I jealous? What was I jealous of? That Felix had cast aside his dignity to be with her?I was, it seemed, even more pathetic than him.And then came the palace banquet, where I saw Claire and Felix kissing behind the rockery. It felt like my entire chest was about to explode, but all I did was watch her coldly.Later, when His Majesty asked if I wanted to tutor her, I agreed, especially after seeing the fearful look on her face.I started tutoring Claire. Day after day, I lectured her about etiquette and propriety, but she didn't seem to understand.Alas. She was foolish, but adorably so.Her words were flippant, and she clearly had a fick

On our wedding day, Rowan didn't do what he was supposed to do. Instead, he pulled a few letters from his sleeve. He read them to me word for word. The letters overflowed with tender affection and were utterly moving. However, there was one problem—the signatures were off. They were from Felix and Gerard, respectively. There was nothing from Derrick, which was within my expectations. He was the most obedient of them all.A smile tugged at Rowan's lips, which made me go numb. That smile meant he was about to lose it. But was this necessary? I hadn't even written back.In the past six months, he'd been dazzling in court. His talent had been on full display, and he'd quietly positioned himself to be the next chancellor.I was honestly terrified he would go off the rails.Sure enough, he leaned in and whispered into my ear, "Are you feeling regretful that I'll be the only one by your side from now on, Your Highness?""A little, I guess," I said."Then, how about I change into a dif

Rowan didn't come looking for me again. I figured he'd given up—he was proud and dignified, after all, and he had the female protagonist with him.But ten days later, in a clash between the two armies, Gerard led a squad to strike the enemy's rear. Rowan should've sent another unit to support them, but he didn't.Instead, he stood in front of me while the soldiers were frantic outside. He strolled into my tent like it was nothing, looking calm and unhurried as he asked, "So, will you marry me?"I stared at him in disbelief. "Have you lost your mind, Rowan?"He came closer, still looking as refined and elegant as always. "Have you forgotten something, Your Highness? You're the one who flirted with me first. You need to stick with something once you've started it. I taught you that, didn't I?"I gaped at him. "But you literally had me thrown behind bars.""The streets were crowded then, and there were too many prying eyes. Your behavior was wanton, and your reputation would've suff

Derrick's reaction was much tamer. All he said was, "I'll keep you safe, Your Highness."I told him and Felix to take care of themselves, subtly hinting that they should keep themselves chaste. I didn't want them to be blinded by the plot armor that was bound to come with the female protagonist's existence. They looked confused, but they still nodded. "Yes, Your Highness."…I remembered how well Rowan had taken care of me before. I hesitated but ultimately found a chance to speak to him. "Three days from now, you need to watch out. I don't know why it came to me, but I dreamed that you would be injured and on the brink of death."His expression shifted slightly. "Very well. I'll be cautious, Your Highness."But three days later, I still received word that he'd been gravely wounded. Fortunately, a mysterious female physician treated him. That had to be the female protagonist.I thought it over and couldn't help myself—I got into disguise and went to see him. As always, my timing

And so, being a young woman who now understood the greater good, I quietly slipped into the army. With Gerard covering for me, I wasn't afraid of being found out.Initially, he objected to me tagging along. He paced anxiously in front of me, muttering, "How can you go? The battlefield doesn't spare anyone. You're delicate—what if you get hurt?"I looked at him and said steadily, "But I'm worried about you. I can't bear to be without you."Gerard paused, his voice softening a little. "The journey is long and tough, and it'll be exhausting to travel to the frontier. How can you—""I can't bear to be without you."His voice grew even smaller. "But the fighting will be intense. I won't have time to—""I can't bear to be without you."Gerard opened his mouth again but only spoke after a long moment. "Come along, then. Either way, I'll protect you. I won't let you be in any danger!"I wasn't worried about that, honestly. I remembered from the original novel that this would be a sweep

That night, I slept terribly. While half-asleep, I thought I saw a shadow. I snapped awake. The figure stiffened when he saw me wake up. "It's me."It was Gerard. Something was seriously wrong with him.I sat up, looking at him coldly. "Do you realize this is a capital crime, Gerard? Even if you're basking in my father's favor right now, you won't get away with this."He walked toward me, and the moonlight finally fell across his face. His usually carefree, unruly face was full of brooding anger. He stopped at my bedside. "Claire, if you can accept Rowan, Felix, and even that guard, why can't you accept me?"I honestly didn't understand how his mind worked. I arched a brow and asked, "Was I the one who ran off to the frontier three years ago?"Gerard faltered, some of his anger bleeding away. "Back then, I just didn't understand. I hovered between life and death countless times when I was on the battlefield. Each time it happened, all I saw was your face."I couldn't help think
