Roman’s silhouette filled the threshold, broad shoulders, dark coat hanging open. The faint scent of cedar and cigarettes drifted in with him. Then his eyes found Lennon.

Not Damian. Lennon.

Roman’s eyes swept over him in one deliberate stare—no, a glare—clinical and predatory. He recognized Lennon. Damian knew Roman recognized him. Why wouldn’t he? He looked almost the same as his father—only Richard was huge and imposing, while Lennon was small and shy.

Roman said nothing at first. He catalog

The penthouse was quieter than it had been in weeks.Roman was on restricted activity per the hospital's instruction, which he was ignoring in the specific way of someone who considered restricted activity a suggestion rather than a directive. He was at the island with his laptop, moving slowly, but moving.Damien was on the couch. This was the part Lennon had not fully anticipated, the version of Damien that was present and recovering and watching things happen that he could not currently intercept. It was not a comfortable version. Damien was managing it. But the management showed around the edges."The boycott threat," Damien said. "Has the league responded.""Not officially." Lennon was on the far side of the island in his training gear, eating standing up because he had twenty minutes before he needed to be at the facility. "Archer spoke to the league coordinator this morning. The coordinator said the opposing team has the right to raise a concern but not to dictate roster deci

  • Professor Grayson's Favorite sin    Chapter 180: Testimony

The board room held forty-three people and it was not designed for forty-three people.Every seat was filled. People stood along the back wall. Three journalists were in the designated press area to the left, which had never been used for an actual press presence before today. Two of them had cameras. One had a recorder on the table and her notebook open and her pen already moving even though the proceeding had not started.Lennon sat at the testimony table alone. He had his statement in front of him. He did not need it, he had written it and he knew every word but having it there was a different kind of preparation. The kind that said, this is real, this is written, this has a permanent shape.Hargrove sat at the head of the board table. He looked at Lennon and then looked at the assembled board members and then at the press area and then back at Lennon. His expression was the specific one of a man who had arranged a proceeding and then watched the proceeding become something lar

The hospital was too bright.Lennon had been in the waiting area for two hours before anyone told him anything useful. A nurse, short sentences, surgical and table for now. They would know more in an hour.He sat back down. His hands were still stained. Someone had given him something to clean them with, but he had not finished cleaning them and he was looking at his hands now the way you looked at things you did not fully believe yet.Archer was beside him. He had not spoken in forty minutes, which was the correct response to the situation and Lennon was grateful for it.Evelyn was across the room on her phone. Managing what needed managing, which was everything outside this building and none of which mattered to Lennon at this moment at all.Roman had a bandage on his arm from somewhere in the corridor, and was seated near the window with the particular stillness of someone holding themselves together by deliberate effort."He will be all right," Archer said.Lennon looked at him.

  • Professor Grayson's Favorite sin    Chapter 178: Uncontrolled

Damien set the phone down on the island. He set it down carefully. The careful part was deliberate, the careful part was the only thing standing between the version of him that was functional and the version that had just watched a knife pressed against Lennon's throat on a live feed.He looked at Archer."Call Roman," he said."Roman is still at the…""Call him now."Archer called.Roman picked up on the second ring."I know," Roman said. "I am already outside. The attorney got the charges dropped eleven minutes ago." A pause. "I saw the feed, one of my contacts flagged it thirty seconds after it went live." Another pause. "I need ten minutes.""You have five.""Then I will be there in five."Damien ended the call on Archer's phone and handed it back.Evelyn was at the island. She was looking at him with the specific expression she kept when she was deciding whether to say the thing she was thinking or wait."Say it," Damien said."You cannot go in uncontrolled.""I am not uncontrol

  • Professor Grayson's Favorite sin    Chapter 177: In Pieces

He came back to consciousness in pieces. The low hum of a vehicle. Then stillness, which meant the vehicle had stopped. Then the specific quality of air in a closed concrete space — cool, flat and without the circulation of anywhere inhabited. Then pain. His wrists, behind him. Something plastic and tight. His right shoulder where he had hit the door of the SUV when they pulled him in.He opened his eyes.Concrete walls. One light source, a single bulb on a cord suspended from the ceiling above a metal chair. He was in the chair, his wrists were zip-tied behind the back of it.He was not gagged. He tested the zip tie. It was tight and properly applied, which meant someone who knew how to do it had done it. He stopped testing it because the information was complete and continuing would only bruise the wrists. He looked at the room. Two men near the far wall. Standing. Not the same two from the SUV, these were different men, bigger, with the particular build of people whose job was

The corner of Fifth and Archer was empty at four AM.A bodega two doors down had its light on. A cab moved through the intersection without stopping. But the specific corner was quiet and the man standing on it was alone and had the posture of someone who had been waiting long enough to be past the uncomfortable part of waiting.Lennon stopped a few feet away. His father looked older than he had in the hotel lobby. The specific quality of a man who had put down something heavy and was not yet used to the feeling of his own hands without it."You came alone," his father said."I said I would.""I know. I was not sure you would."They looked at each other for a moment. The street was quiet around them, somewhere down the block a door closed."Show me what you have," Lennon said. His father reached into his coat and produced a sealed envelope. He held it out. Lennon took it and opened it and looked at what was inside.Three photographs. Printed, not digital. Timestamped. The first showe

Damien's POVDamien paced the hallway outside his bedroom like a caged animal. The corridor was too narrow for the energy boiling under his skin; each turn felt clipped, boots scuffing the dark oak with sharp, frustrated sounds. The door stayed shut. Locked from the inside. Lennon had slammed it ha

LENNON'S POVLennon stood frozen in the foyer after his father walked away. The photo replayed in his mind. Over and over and over.Lennon felt dizzy. There was nothing wrong in that picture, Lennon knew. Infact, that picture would have done more good than harm if his dad wasn't thinking through hi

Chapter 39Saturday morning arrived just like every other—with excitement. There was no stupid alarm to wake Lennon up. No lecture to rush to.He finally cracked his eyes open when his phone buzzed against the nightstand wood: gentle but insistent, like someone tapping on a window. He rolled over

Chapter 38Damien shut the door behind Roman with more force than necessary. The heavy slab of black walnut slammed home; the deadbolt engaged with a metallic 'snick' that cracked through the penthouse like a suppressed gunshot. The sound echoed off the exposed concrete walls and high ceilings, lin
