34. The Burden of Proof
The mood in the town was shifting as the winter settled in and the sun set early. Finn could never quite manage to stay warm enough while out in the fields doing his inspections.
The fence repairs were mounting after the latest winter storm passed and he needed to head up to meet with Russel to start planning what to order.
Dismounting Midnight he tied the horse to the post and headed into the ranch house to meet with Russel and grab a coffee. Just as he stepped into the kitchen, Reese popped her head in to say congratulations.
"Thanks Reese. I am looking forward to marrying her as soon as possible. That house is too big for just the two of us," he smiled and winked at her.
"If you need any help with planning, don't hesitate to reach out."
"I will let my sweet little Lili know that you offered when I get home tonight," he replied as he walked down the hall.

Drake calmly held the phone to his ear and spoke with clarity to his wife, "I am safe but there is a situation here. There has been an unfortunate accident that I must attend to." The handcuffs fell to the bed an Finn let out a small sigh of relief. He felt Anders pick up his wrists and swear at the sores that had festered while Caleb forced Finn to wear them while in his hospital bed. He wrote and he wrote until there was nothing left to say. His hands hurt and his mind was getting fuzzy as sleep was trying to take hold of him. He felt relief coursing throughout his entire body as he walked onto their front porch. Every step was a struggle, just to put one foot in front of the other. Each step forward was pure agony but it was a victory over his acusers. He managed to unlock the front door with his hands that didn't want to function, but he won the fight and opened the door. Home! What a wonderful feeling after being in the hospital. All of the lights were off and he tried to be so quiet so that he didn't wake Lili. Walking was still very painful and Finn needed to avoid the stairs for another few weeks, but he hobbled home, this time in daylight with Lili, Anders, Stacey, Russel and Reese surrounding him to welcome him home. The doctors removed the wiring on his jaw, but he still had restricted movement and it hurt like hell to talk. Poor Lili when he tried to talk for the first time in weeks, she wasn't sure if she should laugh or cry at the little squeak that managed to escape from his mouth. It was pure embarassment! Lili gave in to the feeling floating around in her brain; misery, betrayal, hatred and so much more. Mostly, she gave into grief. Grief for the loss of her father and her brother. Grief for the love of a family so lost in power and money. She wondered who she was but then she saw Finn, the man she loved when he was just a simple ranch hand. The man she loved and they needed to set a course to follow for themselves. The future was theirs - a blank canvas. She cried! She swore! She yelled! And through it all, Finn just held her and comforted her with his words and actions. They just might make it through and find their own way. "Lili, we need a fresh start and I think that Madison will be good. Anders and Stacey are thinking of heading back there. You used to live there and still have old friends. For me, Russel and Reese will only be a couple of hours away.
