MasukGianna’s POV
I did not look away from him. I kept my face blank and my voice flat. "Your contract is already messy, Barrett. If your ex-girlfriend is going to jump on you in the halls between games, it will ruin my image. The school board is looking for an excuse to kick you off the team, and a big public fight with your ex is exactly what the web blogs want." Ryker’s eyes darkened. His hand was still on the metal locker next to my head. He made a tight fist, and the metal wall made a rattling sound behind my ears. He did not look mad at me, he just looked annoyed by the whole situation. "She means nothing to me, Cole," he glared. "I did not invite her down here. I did not want that kiss. It will never happen again. My mind is on the game, not on the past." "Good," I said, looking straight into his gray eyes. "Because if a student or a camera catches her doing that, they will know our relationship is a total lie. I signed that paper to stay hidden and safe. I do not want to get dragged into a school drama that puts my face on the local news." Ryker let out a low grunt. His broad chest moved up and down under his heavy gold and black hockey pads. He did not move his hand away from the locker, but the angry look on his face changed. He looked cooler now. He stared at my face perhaps to see if I was scared, but I was good at hiding my feelings. I gave him no reaction at all. "You really only care about the rules, don't you?" he muttered. He leaned a little closer. His heavy shoulder pad brushed against my leather jacket. "Most new girls on this campus would lose their minds if they were in a room with me. You just look like you are checking a business contract." "I care about surviving," I whispered. "You have a big NHL draft on the line. I have a big secret to keep. If anyone finds out who I was before this school, my life is over. We both have reasons to play our parts perfectly. So let's just stick to the words on the contract." Suddenly, the loud stadium horn went off, and it echoed through the concrete hall. It meant the next part of the game was starting in two minutes. The heavy double doors at the end of the hall started to shake and the team room doors opened. I could hear the sound of sharp skates scraping the floor. The rest of the players were heading back to the ice. Ryker did not jump at the loud sound. He kept his eyes on mine for a long moment. Then, he finally dropped his hand from the locker and stepped back. The hallway felt freezing cold the second his huge body moved away. "The contract says we have to look like a couple in front of the cameras," Ryker said. He pulled the tight straps on his elbow pads to fix them. "That means when I walk out of that tunnel, you need to be back in that front seat. I need them to see you wearing my eighty-eight jersey shirt before the game starts again." "I'll be there," I told him. I smoothed down the front of the white shirt. "Just keep your temper under control out there. A big fight and a penalty will not look good on the morning news report." A tiny spark of mischief came into his gray eyes. "I'll keep my gloves on, Cole. Just don't miss the end of the game. It is about to get very loud." He turned around, picked up his heavy black helmet from the bench, and walked down the dark tunnel toward the bright lights of the main ice rink. I stood against the lockers for a few seconds. The hall became very quiet, but the roar of the crowd outside grew louder. I checked my phone to make sure no weird numbers were texting me. Then, I walked back toward the concrete stairs of the VIP section. When I got back to my seat, the arena was wild. Our school was up by one point. The student section was screaming and slamming their hands against the clear plastic walls. I walked down the steps, ignored the people staring at me, and sat right behind the team bench. On the ice, Ryker was like a machine. He did not look up at the seats again. He was totally locked into the game. He moved fast, shouted orders at his team, and used his big size to push players away from the net. Every time he hit someone into the wall, a loud boom went through the glass. But he stayed calm and did not get into any fights. The clock ticked down to the final two minutes, then the other team took their goalie off the ice to try and score. The pressure was crazy. The puck slid toward our side, and a big mess of sticks and skates formed right in front of the goal. Suddenly, Ryker broke through the pack. He stole the puck with a quick move of his stick. He skated across the center line in three huge strides. The whole stadium stood up and started screaming. He was skating down the empty ice alone. With ten seconds left, he flicked his wrist. The puck slammed right into the back of the net. The horn blared loud. The game was over. We won, two to zero. The whole team jumped onto the ice and ran to gather around Ryker. But he broke through the circle of players. He skated straight toward the clear plastic wall right in front of my seat. He stopped, and threw a cloud of shaved ice against the glass. He pointed the tip of his hockey stick straight at the numbers on my chest, and the giant stadium screens flashed our faces for everyone to see.Gianna’s POV I turned quickly, my boots making no sound on the cold concrete steps. I needed to get out of the rink immediately. The scout's words kept repeating in my head—a liability, a fake girlfriend. If the NHL team dug into my past to check on Ryker's life, they would find out I didn't exist. They would find out I was running from something far worse than a bad reputation."Going somewhere, Cole?"I froze halfway down the back stairs. The voice didn't come from behind me. It came from the bottom of the exit stairwell, echoing off the cinderblock walls.I looked down and saw Jaxson Reed was leaning against the heavy metal exit door, his arms crossed over his chest. He was wearing his team's blue varsity jacket, and his skates were slung over his shoulder by the laces. He looked up at me, a slow, ugly smirk spreading across his face."What are you doing here, Reed?" I frowned. I instinctively pulled my baseball cap lower, hiding my face in the shadow of the brim."I could ask yo
Gianna’s POV The apartment felt too big and too quiet after Ryker left. I tried to study, but the words on my textbook pages didn't seem to make sense. My mind kept drifting back to the way his eyes looked in the dark car. I needed to get out of the penthouse. Around noon, I noticed Ryker’s black knee brace sitting on the small table by the front door. He had forgotten it. I knew from his injury file that his right knee suffered from chronic swelling after long practices. If he skated all day without it, especially with his shoulder already bruised, he would be in no shape to play against Jaxson Reed on Friday. I grabbed the brace, threw on a big black jacket, and pulled a baseball cap low over my eyes. ****** The campus ice rink was on the south side of the university. The building was a massive concrete structure that smelled like old ice, damp gear, and hot chocolate. I walked through the side doors, avoiding the main lobby where students usually hung out. The hallway lea
Gianna’s POV I couldn't move. My eyes stayed locked on his lips, my heart thumping so hard against my ribs I thought it would burst. The space between us felt electric. Ryker’s thumb stayed warm against my lower lip, his fingers holding my chin steady. He leaned in a fraction of an inch closer, his eyes darkening. Then, a harsh, loud buzz cut through the quiet car. Ryker’s phone buzzed to life beside the cup holder between us, the vibration rattling the plastic. The bright screen lit up his dashboard, flashing a number with a New York area code. I pulled my chin out of his grip and pressed myself back against the passenger seat, smoothing down the green silk of my dress. My breathing was ragged. Ryker cursed loudly, punching his hand against the steering wheel before grabbing the phone. He looked at the screen, his expression turning cold, before swiping the screen. "Speak," he barked into the receiver. He listened for a moment, his broad shoulders tensing up again. He d
Gianna’s POV The applause for the athletic director died down, but Ryker’s hand immediately found mine again. He held my fingers in a firm grip, anchoring me to his side as the waiters began serving champagne. But before we could take a step toward our table, a shadow fell over us."Barrett," a sharp, gravelly voice barked.Ryker froze. The relaxed, intense look in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, professional look. He turned around smoothly. "Coach Vance. Good evening."Coach Vance was a short, thick-necked man with graying hair and an icy stare. He was the head coach of the university hockey team, and he ran the program like a military camp. He didn't look at me. His eyes were locked completely on Ryker."I saw what happened on the dance floor with Reed," Coach Vance said, his voice low so the nearby donors couldn't hear. "You're the captain of this team, Barrett. You are already on thin ice with the athletic board because of that locker room incident. The scouts a
Gianna’s POV Jaxson looked down at Ryker’s iron grip on his wrist. His face turned a dangerous shade of red, but he saw the dark fury in Ryker’s gray eyes. Ryker looked ready to start a stadium brawl right there on the white carpet. Jaxson slowly pulled his hand back, trying to act cool."Just a joke, Barrett," Jaxson muttered, taking a step away. "See you on the ice next Friday."Jaxson disappeared into the crowded ballroom, but Ryker didn't relax. His chest was still rising and falling fast, his shoulders tense under his black tuxedo. He turned around to face me. His eyes swept over my bare shoulders and down the green silk of my dress."Come with me," Ryker muttered softly. He grabbed my hand and didn't even wait for my answer, before pulling me through the crowd of donors and coaches, straight toward the center of the ballroom where couples were slow dancing under the massive crystal chandeliers."Ryker, what are you doing?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Peop
Gianna’s POV Friday night arrived too quickly. The university’s annual mid-season athletic gala was held in the grand ballroom downtown. It was the biggest event of the semester, filled with flashing cameras, wealthy donors, and the entire hockey team in formal suits.I stood in front of the mirror in my bedroom, taking a deep breath. For the first time since running away, I wasn't wearing baggy clothes or a hockey jersey. I wore a fitted, dark emerald-green silk dress with a low back and a high slit up the left leg. My blonde hair was pinned up, leaving my neck bare. I looked like a completely different person. When I stepped out into the living room, Ryker was waiting by the door.He was wearing a tailored black tuxedo that made his broad shoulders and chest look attractive and tempting. His hair was styled perfectly back. When he heard my heels click on the floor, he turned around, but stopped dead on his tracks immediately. His gray eyes darkened instantly, sweeping down the le
