Chapter 2

Author: Summer Shadow
About a year ago, I had already consulted a lawyer about getting a divorce. However, to be honest, I could not let go.

Lucian and I had known each other since the eighth grade, and I had pursued him for a long time. It took a whole year before he finally agreed to date me. It had been 11 years, and he had occupied my entire youth.

During those 11 years, he had liked other women and had his share of flings, too. The problem was that his parents disapproved of them. Hence, under their pressure, he eventually married me instead.

Yet, even after all this time, even after we were already married, I still never got him to love me.

I could pretty much guess who the woman he was talking to on the phone was. It had to be Esme Barrett, his first love. The first time I had seriously considered divorce was also because of her.

Back then, we had just gotten married, and we went to my mom's place for dinner. She knew he loved seafood, so she would always get up early to go to the fish market and prepare all kinds of ingredients. Then, she would come home to cook him a huge spread.

Even though we could never finish everything, she would still make tons of food every time. She was terrified of letting her precious son-in-law go hungry.

As usual, my mom had prepared a table full of seafood that day, and Lucian was cracking a crab when his phone rang.

I glanced over and saw the contact name was just two letters.

[E.B.]

Lucian did not even bother wiping his hands and frantically answered the call. "Don't worry. It's fine. I'm not busy. I'll come over right away."

After hanging up, he threw on his jacket and said that one of his army buddies was having some trouble and needed him to help sort it out. Before my mom could even ask any questions, he was already out the door.

My gut told me it definitely was not an army buddy; it had to be Esme.

As it turned out, my instincts were right. I saw a photo on one of his friends' social media, and even though it was taken in a dimly lit bar, I could recognize Lucian. He was in a tracksuit, pressing close to a woman and grinning from ear to ear. He had even styled his hair with gel.

That woman was Esme.

Lucian came home very late that night. He was in an excellent mood, even whistling while he showered.

Meanwhile, I lay in the darkness feeling like I was trapped in an ice-cold hell.

At first, he probably had not crossed too many lines since it was still early in the marriage. Moreover, they only contacted each other occasionally.

Even so, how could I not notice that he had fallen for someone else?

I had looked at him the exact same way when I was in love with him, eyes sparkling.

Before long, Lucian started coming home later and later. He was always clutching his phone with a smile playing at the corners of his mouth, like a teenager experiencing his first love.

No matter how much I cried or made a scene, he always responded with the same dismissive reply. "You're too old to be this dramatic. If you really don't trust me, then let's get divorced."

He knew me too well and exactly where my weak spots were, so he always used that threat to shut me up. Of course, I fell for it every single time because I was terrified of leaving him.

Looking back now, what always made me back down was not Lucian himself, but my love for him. I had loved him for 11 years, and I was too unwilling to let go.

Nonetheless, I was not planning on loving him anymore.

I wanted to love myself instead.

Getting divorced over a bracelet probably sounded ridiculous to anyone who heard it. However, this was simply the final straw.

After leaving behind someone who had been draining me, everything started going smoothly. My studio reopened much faster than I had expected, and it was even twice as big as before.Besides working at the studio, I used my free time to take illustration classes and regularly got together with Serena and other friends. I no longer felt anxious or had insomnia, and I had even gained some healthy weight back.I heard from friends that Lucian and Esme had broken up. I did not ask for details and was not interested in knowing the reason. After all, I needed to hurry home. My three soft, fluffy cats were waiting for me.

  • Purr Ever After   Chapter 11

Time seemed to fly by when I kept myself busy. Soon, my studio was almost ready to reopen. On the day the one-month waiting period ended, I called Lucian and said, "Time's up. Meet me at the courthouse in an hour."I put on flawless makeup and took my time getting there.Lucian was already waiting at the entrance. He looked thinner, with stubble on his chin, and I realized that without me around, life had not been treating him well.I glanced at him indifferently and said, "Let's go inside."When we were filling out the paperwork, he kept hesitating to sign it. "Meredith, are you sure you want to make this into such a big deal?"I did not look up and kept writing. "You were the one who made it a big deal, not me."Lucian got defensive and angry, lowering his voice to say, "I'm a man, so I'm not worried, but you're almost 30! No one's going to want a divorced old woman."Even at this point, he was still trying to use reverse psychology on me. I used to be afraid when he lost his

Somehow, Lucian had either changed his personality overnight or Joanne had pressured him, because he actually started apologizing to me. He sent messages to me every single day without fail.[Lucian: The fat orange cartoon cat is really cute, but I still think our three little furballs at home are cuter. Should we get another cat to keep them company?][Lucian: That Eastorian place is amazing. I heard the ingredients are flown in fresh from Boreas every day. We should go try it.][Lucian: Or better yet, let's just go to Boreas and have the most authentic Eastorian cuisine there.][Lucian: Oh, but I can't leave the country while I'm still on active duty. How about Torbeit instead? You've always loved it there, and we can finally have the honeymoon we've missed.]I could not decide if he was forced into this or if something unholy had possessed him. In the past, I was always the one sending him those boring, trivial messages, and he never replied. Even so, I kept doing it enthusiast

Later, I went to Lucian's parents' house to drop off the property division contract. Just as I was about to step into the elevator, I saw Esme coming up from the underground parking garage. She was probably there to drop off Lucian's car.The sight of her made me sick, so I turned away and kept walking. However, Esme grabbed my arm and stopped me. "You're Meredith Carter, right? I want to talk to you."I yanked my hand free, irritated. "What's there to talk about between us?"She did not give up and grabbed me again, this time harder. "I think some things need to be said clearly. You don't have a job anyway, so it's not like you're in a rush."Fine. I was curious to hear what she had to say.We went to a nearby coffee shop, and she ordered two vanilla espressos. She smirked and said, "Their coffee beans are flown in and ground by hand. Try it."I did not have time for her nonsense. "Say whatever you want to say quickly."Esme sipped her coffee and said, "Lucian doesn't love you

  • Purr Ever After   Chapter 8

After taking a few days to rest, I picked myself back up and reached out to my old studio teammates, determined to get the business running again. Honestly, I was more capable than Lucian. I had a better education, and after all his years in the military, he barely had the skills to survive in the real world.Right after graduation, I traveled all over the country working and hustling on my own. I tried every kind of job and eventually, through hard work, opened my own photography studio. At the time, I had no idea why his family insisted I shut the studio. Nonetheless, I was completely lovesick back then and actually agreed to their ridiculous demands, spending two years as a housewife.Sometimes when I was bored at home, I scrolled through social media. My classmates were sharing updates: one became a designer, another started their own company, and some even landed a government job.Everyone seemed happy and thriving. Meanwhile, I had lost my job, lost my income, and then I had

My mom still thought too well of people. In Lucian's family, there was no such thing as treating others the way one wanted to be treated. When Lucian blocked Joanne from stepping closer, she recovered quickly. She forced a smile that did not reach her eyes and said, "Oh, Meredith, come on! I don't see what the big deal is. It's just a few petty little things, not worth such a tantrum. Look, you've made your poor mom cry from worry."I'm getting older now, so sometimes I forget what you like and don't like. But from the moment you two started dating, I adored you. I've treated you like my own daughter."My mom wiped her face with the back of her hand, and her expression turned fierce. "We don't dare call you family, nor do we want to. Meredith already has a mother. She doesn't need you pretending to be one."Joanne's face twisted. "Cynthia, really? Do you have to talk like that, too? She's just being emotional, and you're actually encouraging her to act out."My mom snorted coldly
