Lisa’s POV

An advantage that came with being a part of the elite family was, you get to meet with new people almost every weekend. From there, new alliances and business partners were formed.

And just the same way there were advantages, there were also lots of disadvantages that came with it.

Your life was for the media to feed off and when fine-tuned, they delivered to the public who were always ready to chew out anyone without a second thought.

Most times, the backlash wasn't because of not being where the elites were, a lot of them did it for the fun of it and for the sole reason of having a voice in the media space.

Tonight, Jace and I were attending a profile event, courtesy of my parents who were determined to get me back on track.

The chandelier above our heads glittered like a thousand frozen stars, scattering light across crystal glasses and polished marble floors.

The hall was alive with chatter, laughter, and the soft swell of string music, but I felt the weight of every

  • QUEEN OF ASHES: RISE OF THE SCORNFUL EX-WIFE!   Chapter 33

Jace’s POVIt had been an hour since we returned from the hospital but yet, I haven't taken a step towards the stairs. I was on the couch, holding out the crisp, cream colored folder which was heavy in my hands. My father’s bold handwriting was staring up at me from the first page. It was scrawled across the project proposal he had shoved at me earlier. I didn’t want this. Not because I couldn’t handle it but because accepting this project under the Davenport name meant exposure. It meant attention and in no time people would start digging, and I had too many skeletons in my cupboard. Taking a deep breath, I leaned back into the couch, running a hand down my face while staring at the ceiling as if it would provide an answer. My pulse throbbed in my temple. I could already hear the whispers: Jace Davenport finally takes the reins. The business world was like a vulture pit, and vultures had sharp eyes. If they looked too closely, they would discover the truth and everything I ha

  • QUEEN OF ASHES: RISE OF THE SCORNFUL EX-WIFE!   Chapter 32

Reader’s POVDominic swallowed the rest of his words as the door flung open and Jace walked in.For the first few seconds, Jace alternated his gaze between his brother and Lisa before allowing them to rest on Dominic who was glaring at him. “Uhm… you will… you will be fine.” He stammered, fiddling with his fingers. Rolling her eyes, Lisa intertwined her hand with his only to pull him towards the door. Dominic was going to yell after them but he swallowed his words. Suddenly, Jace turned and walked up to him. “You should be careful." Those were the only words he said to him before scurrying back to Lisa's side. Dominic was confused. He was trying to wrap his head around his behavior but he couldn't come up with anything. The moment they stepped out of the ward, Avery, who had been waiting for a chance, shot to her feet. Ignoring Lisa and Jace, she pushed in the door. The sudden intrusion made Dominic shift slightly in his bed as he slowly shifted his gaze towards Avery who was

  • QUEEN OF ASHES: RISE OF THE SCORNFUL EX-WIFE!   Chapter 31

Jace’s POVThe hospital hallway felt longer than it actually was. It was stretched out in endless white under the dim glow of fluorescent lights. Staring at nothing, I was sitting slouched on one of the chairs, my elbows on my knees and my hands locked together. My grip was so tight that my knuckles had turned pale.Sitting next to me on my left was my father. His posture was perfect as always as the weight of authority pressed down on every breath he exhaled. To my right, several chairs down was Avery. She was simmering with her arms folded on her chest and lips pressed into a thin line. It was all because of my father's presence that she was yet to create a ruckus, otherwise, she would have forcefully made her way into Dom’s ward.Taking a deep breath, I shifted my gaze to the ward where Dom’s name was attached to. It has just been a few minutes since Lisa walked in but I couldn't help but shift on my seat. The so called few minutes were looking like an hour now. Leaning into my

Dominic’s POVThe signature antiseptic stench of the hospital clung to everything, the sheets, walls and even to my skin. It made me feel small and boxed in like some wounded animal in a cage. The monitors beside me beeped in a steady rhythm, their sound drilling into my head. My ribs burned every time I tried to shift. My leg, which was encased in plaster, was heavy and felt foreign. The bandages which were wrapped around my body felt like chains.Up until now, I haven't experienced the whole idea of being weak. I had always been the one in control, the one towering over others and making commands no one dared to go against. But now, one accident has reduced me to this. I was lying down flat on my back and in a place that reeked of pity. The humiliation was worse than the pain.Digging my teeth into my lower lips, I shifted against the stiff pillows, trying to push myself up. The movement sent knives of pain slicing through my side and dragging a groan from my throat. Damn it. —

Lisa’s POVHospitals had a way of draining someone's soul. It was one of the places I detested with passion and I also tried all I could not to be there. But unfortunately, that was my destination. The good thing is, I wasn't the one who was admitted, I was merely paying a visit to my ex husband.“Are you ready?" Jace asked, halting next to me. Nodding, I muttered, “Yeah." He pushed his hand towards me and without thinking, I took it and together, we made our way into the building. The polished white floors reflected the fluorescent lights too brightly, the air smelled faintly of antiseptic, and the quiet hum of machines seemed louder than any human voice. As Jace and I walked through the sterile halls, I couldn't help but dart my eyes around. I was searching for him in the emergency unit which was on the ground floor. “I think he has been moved to a private ward," Jace said and that instant, I whisked my head towards him.“How did you know what I was thinking?" The words came o

  • QUEEN OF ASHES: RISE OF THE SCORNFUL EX-WIFE!   Chapter 28

Lisa’s POVThe moment I turned off my engine, I got out of my car, swinging my bag lazily. Today had been a very long day for me at the office and so I was drained of all my energy. When I stepped into the house, I was expecting the familiar calm atmosphere that welcomed me each time but instead, I walked into chaos.Jace was pacing the living room like a man who has been possessed by a legion of demons. He was moving from one end of the room to the other, circling the coffee table, pulling up the cushions on the couch, and kneeling to check beneath the armchairs. All this, he did then before a minute elapsed but he wasn't done yet.Rising to his full height, he placed his hand on his waist and then began to whip his head back and forth with an uneven breath. For a second, I thought someone had been chasing him and he had just barely escaped.“Jace?” My voice cut through the room. “What on earth are you doing?” I blurted as I couldn't take it anymore. That instant, he froze. It was
