(Elouera’s POV)

The truth hit me suddenly, cutting through the fog in my mind. I finally let go of Holden’s coat.

The dark, webbed veins on his wrist weren't a mark of shared suffering. They were the mark of a master craftsman who handled his own venom every single day.

My mouth went dry, the bitter taste of copper flooding my tongue as I looked from the black lines spidering beneath his cuff straight into his warm, amber-green eyes. The tenderness in his face suddenly looked like a grotesque coat of paint slapped over rusted iron.

"Take it, Elouera," he whispered again, his voice lower now, vibrating with a quiet, coercive weight. The smooth black pill pressed harder against my bottom lip, smelling faintly of bitter almonds and scorched earth. "It's time to rest."

Every instinct that had kept me alive in the gutter before I ever wore silk ripped through my exhaustion.

I didn't try to overpower him. I didn't try to draw a weapon I didn't have.

Instead, I let my jaw relax, parting my lips just enough to let the pill slip onto my tongue. Holden’s shoulders visibly dropped, a long, triumphant sigh escaping his chest as his eyes fluttered shut for a single, arrogant second of complete victory.

In that split second, I didn't swallow. I clamped the pill beneath my tongue, gathered every drop of moisture left in my mouth, and spat the black sphere directly into his face.

It hit him right below his left eye with a wet smack before dropping into his lapel.

Before he could react, before his eyes could snap open in shock, I slammed both of my palms against his chest, shoving his heavy frame backward with a ragged, feral scream. The Archduke tumbled off his knees, his broad shoulders crashing heavily against the low mahogany settee.

I didn't wait for him to recover. I scrambled across the rug on my hands and knees, my fractured rib tearing a fresh scream from my lungs as I lunged for the servant's door. I threw my weight against the oak panel, spilling out into the pitch-black spiral stairwell, my bare feet slippery with Pip’s cooling blood.

I ran.

I didn't look back. I didn’t check if the dead boy was still lying there in the dark. I ran down the stone steps, taking two at a time. My hands dragged along the rough walls to keep me from falling.

Every breath hurt my chest, and the dark veins on my neck throbbed painfully. But I kept going. I didn’t stop until I pushed through the hidden drain at the bottom of the tower and stumbled into the cold, wet fog covering the palace gardens

( Archduke Holden)The quiet that settled over the bedchamber after the door slammed shut was absolute.

I stayed on the floor for a while, my back resting against the soft fabric of the settee. The smell of rain and wild honey still lingered in the room, but the cold wind coming through the open balcony doors was slowly carrying it away.I stayed on the floor for a while, my back resting against the soft fabric of the settee. The smell of rain and wild honey still lingered in the room, but the cold wind coming through the open balcony doors was slowly carrying it away.

Slowly, I reached up, my long fingers plucking the black pill from the folds of my lapel where she had spat it. I held the small, damp sphere up toward the pale moonlight, turning it over in my fingers.

A small, genuine smile curled the corners of my mouth.

"Fierce little bird," I murmured to the empty room, my tone laced with genuine, affectionate pride. "So quick. So stubborn. Just like your mother."

I tossed the pill back into the small silver case, snapping the latch shut with a sharp, metallic click.

I looked down at my legs. They had been useless for twelve years, keeping me tied to a mechanical chair. Everyone in the Imperial Court believed my legs had been ruined after the ambush at the northern border.I didn't reach for my mechanical cane where it lay on the floorboards.

Instead, I set my boots flat against the Persian rug, shifted my weight forward, and stood up.

There was no strain. No wincing. No hesitation. My spine straightened fully, my tall frame casting a long, imposing shadow across the moonlit room. I flexed my fingers, rolling my shoulders back as the dark, webbed veins beneath my lace cuffs throbbed with a dark, steady warmth.

I walked smoothly across the bedchamber, my footfalls completely silent against the floor, stepping toward the high mahogany bookshelf built into the eastern wall. I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the carved leather spine of an ancient history tome on the third shelf, and pulled it forward three inches.

A heavy, mechanical groan echoed behind the plaster.

The central section of the bookshelf slid backward half an inch, then glided silently to the right, revealing a small, reinforced iron safe embedded directly into the load-bearing stone of the palace wall.

I lifted my right hand to the heavy brass dial. Three turns to the left. Two to the right. A final, heavy click resonated through the metal as the lock disengaged.

I pulled the thick iron door open.

A faint, cold violet glow spilled out from inside the dark recess, illuminating the lower half of my face.

Inside the safe sat three velvet-lined wooden racks, stacked neatly on top of one another. Arranged in precise, flawless rows were dozens upon dozens of small glass vials. Each one was filled with a dark, iridescent liquid that shimmered beneath the pale light, swirling with a thick, heavy sediment that looked like liquid obsidian.

Not the Night-bloom.

The Night-bloom was a simple, crude sedative Bram used for street sickness. What sat inside this vault was something far more ancient. Far more cruel.

An experimental, refined heat-inducing toxin. A substance carefully engineered to bypass the physical body entirely, sinking straight into the nervous system, artificially triggering an violent, uncontrollable Omega heat while simultaneously calcifying the victim's natural resistance.

I reached inside, my long fingers gently tracing the cool glass of a vial in the middle row.

I hadn't been trying to cure her. I hadn't even been trying to suppress her.

For six long months, I had been systematically feeding her micro-doses of this very venom, carefully orchestrating her fake "sickness," driving her body to the absolute brink of a violent, forced heat spike right under the noses of the Crown Duke and the Commander.

And now, her body was completely saturated. The catalyst was already blooming in her blood. She thought she was running away from her cure, but every rapid beat of her racing heart was simply circulating the poison deeper into her bones.

I closed the iron door with a soft, heavy thud, spinning the brass dial until the mechanism locked firmly back into place.

I turned back toward the open balcony, looking out over the sprawling, fog-drenched roofs of the capital. Somewhere down there, running blind in the dark, my little bird was trying to escape a trap that had been closed around her neck before she ever learned how to fly.

"Run as fast as you can, Elouera," I whispered to the night air, adjusting my cuffs over my dark veins. "Because when the heat finally takes you at dawn... you will have no choice but to crawl right back to me."

Stirling Vance I had always believed I was a sensible man living in a kingdom full of mad dogs. Callan ruled through his royal status and brutal behavior, while Jace acted like a weapon that had been trained to kill without thinking. But I was different. I thought things through before making a move. Every lord, every agreement, and every betrayal was something I studied carefully until I found a way to use it to my advantage. When I first discovered the truth about the weak, sickly Second Prince, everything changed. I studied the security footage and slowly put the pieces together. Prince Elian wasn’t a boy at all. He was an Omega girl hiding the bloodline of the lost Sunfall family. To me, Elouera was the perfect weapon. She was exactly what I needed to bring down the Empress and protect the Northern House for the next hundred years. I told myself I was only interested in her because of her intelligence. I told myself I admired the brilliant, dangerous mind hidden behind that h

Elouera The iron gate crashed down behind us, leaving us trapped in complete darkness inside the underground archive. Outside the doors, I could still hear the distant sounds of crossbow bolts hitting stone and Callan’s guards shouting in panic. But their voices soon faded until everything became frighteningly quiet. The emergency lockdown had been activated. Thick iron bars had dropped from the central control tower, sealing us forty feet beneath the High Council chamber. We were trapped in a small, windowless stone room, barely twelve feet long and twelve feet wide. Rotting books, cedar shelves, and ancient papers filled the space. The only light came from a single candle burning weakly on a dusty reading desk in the corner. And there was barely any air to breathe. I stumbled backward until my back hit the cold, damp iron door. My chest rose and fell as I struggled to catch my breath. Every breath tasted of dust, metal, and cold sweat. My hands shook uncontrollably as I gra

Elouera The tall stained glass dome above the High Council chamber didn’t simply break. It shattered completely, sending sharp pieces of glass and lead raining down onto the marble floor like a deadly storm. Vane’s mercenaries had attached a heavy iron grappling hook to the stone platform. The chains groaned under its weight, but the expected group of Black Cell mercenaries never came down. Instead, Vane’s armored figure disappeared into the shadows among the high roof beams, hidden by the thick cloud of glass dust and smoke. It had all been planned. Vane had used himself as a distraction to frighten the remaining guards and throw them into complete panic. In the middle of the huge chamber, everything seemed to slow down. The silence and tension became almost unbearable. I moved back into the deep shadows of a marble pillar near the eastern entrance. The high lace collar of my velvet tunic felt like hot iron against my neck. Beneath it, the golden lines of my mark were glowing

Crown Prince Callan The huge alarm bell at the top of the palace continued ringing. Its loud, steady sound shook the marble floor beneath my boots. CLANG. CLANG. CLANG. Around us, the High Council chamber was quickly emptying. Lords shouted in fear while the sound of clashing weapons filled the hall. Captains barked orders, rushing their soldiers toward the western gates to fight the rebel army that I had made them believe was coming from the Outback pass. The air was filled with fear, the smell of burning candle grease, and the sharp, metallic scent of freshly drawn swords. On the raised platform, my mother stood beside her golden throne. Her silver-threaded gown remained perfectly neat, but her eyes burned with uncontrollable anger. I had not seen her this furious since the northern purges thirty years ago. “Callan!” Empress Cynthia’s voice cut through the noise. She hurried down the marble steps, her sharp heels clicking angrily against the stone. She stopped just three ste

Elouera My heart beat increased, but I kept my face calm and unreadable, still pretending to be the sickly prince. Across the huge, candlelit High Council chamber, Pip’s hand shook as she placed her empty glass on a tray covered with velvet. For a brief moment, her eyes met mine. Her face was turning red, and cold sweat had begun to form on her forehead. The double dose of concentrated Catalyst-7—the deadly poison meant for me was already taking effect in her body. She had no idea what she had swallowed. She probably thought the pills were ordinary medicine for a headache, left behind on the sofa. Ten minutes. That was all the time we might have. If the full dose took effect, Pip’s suppressed Omega nature would suddenly erupt right there on the lower floor of the gallery. Two hundred Alphas were already on edge after the fires the previous night. Their tempers were short, and they were hungry for blood. If Pip lost control and released her Omega pheromones, the Alphas could

Elouera The cold morning mist drifted in from the courtyard through the tall gothic archways. It carried the sharp smell of damp ash and burnt wood from the lower wing. Inside the private room beside the High Council chamber, the silence felt heavy and uncomfortable. I sat hunched on the edge of a velvet sofa, making myself look weak and sick, just like the fragile Second Prince everyone believed I was. Jace stood on my left, his large body blocking the way like a solid wall. Stirling stood on my right, his broad shoulders straight as he leaned against a marble pillar. Their strong Alpha scents surrounded me completely. The sharp smell of cedar mixed with wet earth, icy frost, and the powerful scent of lightning. Their scents covered mine so well that no one could detect my true Omega nature. To any lord who passed by, I was nothing more than a weak, dying prince being protected by two dangerous men. Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors at the end of the room began to open. Clic
