Vaelric pulled me aside after Lucan and Mireya finally stopped begging. He waited until we were far enough from them before looking directly into my eyes, his expression serious.

Anwen, are you sure about this? he asked quietly.

I turned to him with an irritated look. Yes, I am. Don’t ask me stupid questions. Didn’t you see what I saw? They were having sex in my bed, Vaelric. My bed! Of all the things they could have done, they chose to disrespect me like that in my own house.

He raised his han

I stared at the dark passage, unable to move. Whatever had been running toward us was getting closer, and the growling coming from Storm was becoming louder. Vaelric raised his flashlight while Lucan moved slightly in front of Mireya.“What is that?” Mireya whispered.“I don’t know,” Vaelric answered. “But whatever it is, it’s coming this way.”I turned around, looking for somewhere we could hide, but the shop was filled with shelves and frozen display cabinets. There was barely enough space to move around without knocking something over. I could hear the creatures approaching, their movements becoming louder as they rushed through the building.“Can we leave?” I asked.Vaelric shook his head. “Not yet. We don’t know how many are outside, and running blindly into the street could be worse.”I looked toward the entrance, then back at the display cabinets. All the guns were frozen. We had travelled all this way hoping to find something useful, but now we were standing in a gun shop surr

Okay then, I have a plan, I announced, clapping my hands to get everyone’s attention. I was still furious about losing the bag of tools, but shouting at Lucan and Mireya would not magically bring it back. We needed replacement tools, and if Vaelric knew a place where we could get guns, then we had to take advantage of that opportunity.Everyone turned toward me. Vaelric leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, while Lucan and Mireya stood a few steps away from each other. Storm sat beside Vaelric, occasionally lifting his head as if he understood that we were discussing something important.I took a deep breath before continuing. This plan would involve all of us, and I wanted everyone to understand exactly what they were supposed to do before we stepped outside.“First of all, we’re all going to put on our heating suits. Nobody is going outside wearing ordinary clothes and expecting to survive. We’ll check our gloves, boots, face coverings, and heating equipment before we leave

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of Storm barking furiously. At first, I thought he was simply being restless, but the noise grew louder with every passing second. He sounded frightened, and that was unusual for a dog who had spent most of his time quietly following Vaelric around the house.I threw the blanket aside and hurried out of my room. The moment I entered the living room, I found Vaelric already there, trying to calm Storm down. The dog was standing near the window, his ears raised and his tail stiff as he barked repeatedly at something outside.“What is wrong with him?” I asked, moving closer.“I don’t know,” Vaelric replied. “He started barking a few minutes ago, and he won’t stop.”Lucan and Mireya soon joined us. Mireya looked half asleep, with her hair scattered across her face, while Lucan rubbed his eyes and complained about the noise. I was about to tell him that nobody had asked for his opinion when Storm barked so loudly that we all turned toward the window

Lucan slowly turned his face back toward me, his hand still pressed against his cheek. For a moment, he looked as though he wanted to say something terrible, but he eventually swallowed whatever words were on his tongue. I was still glaring at him when he let out a bitter laugh and shook his head.“Nice job, Anwen. You must be feeling very powerful right now because you have all the food and blankets in this house. You have everything you need, so you can stand there and treat the rest of us like we’re nothing.”I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could get a single word out, a strange scratching noise came from the front door.We all turned toward the entrance. At first, the sound was faint, almost like someone dragging their fingernails across the wood. Then it grew louder, followed by several heavy scrapes that made the door tremble slightly. Vaelric’s expression changed immediately, and he moved toward the entrance before stopping a few steps away from it.“Stay back,” he w

I was resting peacefully in my room when Vaelric suddenly rushed inside, looking so serious that I immediately sat up on the bed. He rarely moved around the house in such a hurry, and the expression on his face made me wonder what had happened.“Anwen, you need to see this.”I pushed the blanket away and stared at him. “What is it? What happened?”“Just come and look through the window.”There was something in his voice that made me get out of bed without asking any more questions. I followed him into the living room, where he stopped beside the window and pointed outside. At first, I did not understand what I was looking at. The snow was thick, and the wind kept pushing it across the street, making it difficult to see anything clearly. Then one of the shapes moved.I froze.Another shape appeared behind it, followed by two more. They were moving slowly through the snow, their bodies covered in thick fur, their heads lowered as they sniffed the ground. One of them stopped beside a fro

And then Vaelric slowly kissed me.For a moment, I completely forgot how to react. His lips were warm against mine, and the suddenness of it left me frozen in place. I had been sitting on my bed, talking about how foolish I felt, and now the man who had only known me for a few days was kissing me as though he had been thinking about doing it for a while. My eyes widened, and I immediately pushed him back. What?Vaelric stepped away, looking startled by his own actions. Shit, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do that without asking you first. I don’t know what came over me.He rubbed the back of his neck and looked away, clearly embarrassed. I had never seen him like that before. He was usually so composed, always seeming to know what to do even when everything around us was falling apart. Seeing him struggle to find the right words was strangely amusing, although I was still trying to understand what had just happened.I watched him for a few seconds. He looked ready to leave the room, prob
