HE DOESN'T BELIEVE HER

~ADRIAN~

DAY 41.

I drove four miles before I pulled over, and I only did it because my hands had started to feel tight on the wheel.

There was nothing out there.

Just a stone shoulder, a dead field, and a fence post leaning over like it was tired of holding itself up. I turned off the engine and sat in the dark with my hands still on the wheel, going over every word she'd said in that kitchen.

A feeling.

That was a lie, and I knew it.

Not all of it, and that was the pro

THE KISS~ADRIAN~DAY 25.She didn't ask me again, and that was worse than if she had.All through the next morning, Sienna moved around the farm like nothing had changed. She poured coffee, and talked to Hale about fence posts, and counted jugs with Walter at the pump house. She smiled at me whenever our eyes met. But there was a small, careful distance in the way she did it, the kind of space you leave around a door you've decided not to open yet.I knew that distance. I'd built it myself, a thousand times, around a thousand locked rooms.I just hadn't ever been on the other side of it.By afternoon, I was so tired of the silence that I would have welcomed an argument. I walked the fence line twice. I checked the cameras, which were still sitting exactly where I'd left them, small and patient and watching. I called Marcus and got his voicemail and hung up without leaving a message, because there was nothing in the world I could say to a machine that I hadn't already said to mysel

TOO CLOSE~SIENNA~DAY 26.I woke up to the smell of coffee, and for one confused second, I thought I was somewhere else.Gray light slanted through the gap in my curtain. The house was cold, but not the bone-deep cold of the past few weeks. Somewhere below me, a pan clanked against the stove, and a floorboard creaked under a heavy, careful step. I lay there with the blanket pulled up to my chin, and I listened to a man move around my kitchen like he'd done it a hundred times before. Then I remembered, and my face went warm.Adrian.He had slept across the hall, on a mattress with a lavender smell, with his door open and mine open and a quiet space between us that I'd lain awake listening to for most of the night. I hadn't heard him sleep. I hadn't heard him move, either, but I'd felt him there, steady and alert, the way you feel a fire banked low in the next room.I put on a sweater, finger-combed my hair, gave up, and went downstairs.---He was standing at the stove with a spat

THE FIRST NIGHT AT THE COMPOUND~ADRIAN~DAY 27.I found the first device at ten past two in the morning, and I knew right away that I wasn't going to be sleeping in my truck again.I'd been walking the fence line for an hour. It was a habit I'd picked up two nights earlier and hadn't bothered to explain, a slow loop around the farm with a flashlight turned down to a dull red glow, checking the posts one at a time. The ground was iron hard. The air was so cold it hurt to breathe, and the stars hung over the barn in thick, sharp groups that made the whole sky look like cracked glass.I'd almost finished the circuit when my light caught something small, tucked between two wooden slats on the north side of the gate.It was about the size of a matchbox, wrapped in black tape, with a tiny pinhole lens at one end. Someone had set it into the corner of a fence post at exactly the height of a man's chest, angled down the drive toward the house.I crouched in the frost and stared at it for

SIENNA WINS~SIENNA~DAY 28.By the morning of the hearing, I had forty-one signatures.Adrian had gone door to door for two days, with Walter's paper list in one hand and a pen in the other. He drove down every cold, dark road in the county, knocking on screen doors and talking to people in low, calm tones. Nobody asked him to explain who he was. They just listened, and nodded, and wrote their names in careful, shaky letters at the bottom of a page.Rachel stacked them in a neat pile on the desk in her office, and she looked at them for a long time."This is better than I hoped," she said. "It isn't enough on its own. A stack of paper can be argued with. But if even a few of them are willing to stand up and say it out loud...""They'll come," Adrian said."How do you know?""Because I asked them to." He glanced at me. "And because they remember who gave them water."I couldn't answer. My throat had gone tight.⸻The courtroom was fuller than last time.I noticed it as soon as we walk

ETHAN FIGHTS BACK~SIENNA~DAY 31.Adrian reached me before the gavel finished echoing. He didn't say a word. He just walked down the aisle through the thin crowd of coats and blankets, calm and unhurried, and stopped at the rail behind my chair. I felt him there. When I stood up, my knees nearly gave out, and his hand came under my elbow so smoothly that nobody in the room could have said it was meant to hold me up."Breathe," he murmured."I am breathing." I told him. "Then do it slower."I almost laughed. Rachel gathered her papers in two quick sweeps and snapped her folder shut, and we walked out of Courtroom Four together while Thomas Reed pretended to be very busy with his briefcase.Ethan was still sitting at the left table when we passed. I didn't look at him. But I felt his eyes on my back all the way to the door, like two cold coins pressed between my shoulder blades. The hallway outside was dim and freezing.A single lantern sat on a bench near the window, throwing a s

THE DIVORCE HEARING~SIENNA~DAY 31.The county courthouse smelled like candle wax and wet wool.I noticed it the second I pushed through the heavy front doors, with Rachel’s hand light on my elbow. The lobby was almost dark. The big chandelier that usually hung over the staircase sat dead and gray, and the only light came from a row of battery lanterns somebody had set along the marble floor. A security guard in a thick coat waved us through the metal detector by flashlight, and his breath made little clouds in the cold air.“Courthouse has a backup generator,” Rachel said quietly. “It only runs the courtrooms. Everything else is on emergency lights.”“Is that why they didn’t postpone?”“The chief judge put every family case on the emergency docket. He said if people can’t get paperwork through in a month like this, half the county will be fighting over property with shotguns.” She gave a dry little smile. “Which is why you’re here. Don’t look so scared.”“I’m not scared.”“Your h
