Emilia did not ask whether it was true, because the answer was already written across his face in lines that eight lives had carved there.

The white corridor hummed around them with the faint electric sound of a place that had been waiting a very long time for visitors. Daniel stood a few paces away, studying the floor with great attention, and she understood that he was giving them the only privacy the narrow hallway could offer. She stepped closer to Kaelen until the lantern light caught the g

Emilia kept her smile in place and walked toward the open door as though every step were an act of surrender, though her whole body was straining against it.The Meridian disk had stopped burning, but the white letters still glowed faintly on its surface, and she turned her fist so that the words pressed against her palm where no camera could see them. Joss rose from her chair and followed a pace behind her with her hands clasped loosely at her waist, the way a bridesmaid follows a bride, and her pale face betrayed nothing at all. Emilia had known her for eighteen years and had never once seen her control her expression so perfectly. The room beyond the door was the loveliest she had seen since the world ended. A wide bed stood against one wall with a quilt of soft yellow wool, and a lamp with a paper shade cast a honey colored glow over a small wooden desk and a shelf of worn paperbacks. The far wall was almost entirely window, and through it she saw a garden in full bloom, with rose

Emilia whirled and hurled herself at the steel door, and the metal rang under her fists like a struck bell. She heard Kaelen on the other side, hammering and shouting her name, his voice muffled to a distant roar by the thickness of the steel. She pressed her ear against the cold surface and caught the sound of a rifle butt cracking against the lock, again and again, and then the faint clamor of Daniel yelling that the hinges were reinforced and that nothing short of an explosive would move them. Her palms were burning, and she realized she had been striking the door hard enough to split the skin.Behind her Joss said very gently that it was no use.Emilia turned slowly, with her back flat against the door and the Meridian disk still clenched in her fist. The corridor stretched away before her in a long white tunnel, and the strip of light overhead had begun to pulse softly, in the rhythm of a slow breath. Joss sat exactly where she had been, small and tidy in her blue cardigan, with

  • REBORN IN THE APOCALYPSE, CLAIMED BY THE COMMANDER    Chapter 34- Come Alone

Emilia stood with one boot on the step of the transport and listened to the dead radio hiss, and every sensible part of her mind told her that she had just been handed bait.Joss had said it in the code of their childhood, the same quick and breathless whisper she used to use when she wanted to sneak out of a sleepover. He lied had been the part that mattered, and come alone had been the part that was meant to be overheard. Emilia had spent half a lifetime learning how Joss hid things inside other things, and she felt the shape of the warning settle in her chest like a coin dropped into a well. She climbed into the cab and told everyone to sit down.Kaelen was already in the driver's seat with the engine running, and he did not look at her as the transport lurched forward across the field. The silo fell away behind them in a haze of smoke, and the ruined pump house shrank to a gray smudge on the riverbank. Emilia pressed her palm against the window and searched for Garrick among the f

The fire rolled across the riverbank like a tide of orange glass, and Emilia did not feel the heat reach her because something small and thin threw itself over her body. She hit the gravel with the breath knocked out of her lungs and the stranger's weight pressing against her back. The blast roared above them, and burning fragments of concrete spattered the stones on either side of her head. When the sound finally rolled away into a long ringing hush, she turned her head and found the woman in the torn raincoat lying across her shoulders with both arms spread wide, her gray face a handsbreadth from Emilia's own.The woman's eyes were brown, and they were wet, and they were looking at her with a terrible dawning clarity. Her lips moved around a word that she had not spoken in years, and what came out was a small cracked whisper. She said that her name was Marta, and that she had been a schoolteacher on the second day of the red sky, and that she had not been able to stop screaming sinc

The helicopter rose from the river like a great black insect, and every pane of glass in the pump house shivered in its frame.Emilia threw herself against the wall beside the window and pulled Lena down with her as the aircraft swung its nose toward the building. The rotors chopped the mist into streamers, and a thin red light blinked on the underside of the fuselage, steady and patient as a watching eye. Director Varga stood frozen in the doorway with her hand still on the latch, and her face had gone so white that her scar looked like a thread of ink drawn across paper. She said in a hollow whisper that the aircraft had been built to obey only her order, and that its pilots had no minds of their own to be turned. Then she corrected herself with a bitter little laugh. She said that this was exactly the kind of sentence a person says in the moment before discovering that she was wrong.Voss spoke again from the radio, and his voice was so pleasant that it made Emilia's stomach turn.

Kaelen lifted his head from Emilia's shoulder, and the small bright voice in the radio went on speaking as though it were afraid that silence might swallow it again.Ivy said that she had watched Voss build the cage for eleven years through the cracks in the seam. She could not describe it well, because the door bent her sense of shape and distance, but she knew that it was made of the same pale metal as the machine under Marlowe Hill and that it had been fitted to the exact measure of one man. Voss had spent years collecting records of every regressor who woke after the first death, and he had studied each of them in turn, searching for the one whose memory ran deepest. Kaelen had been the only one who remembered the first closing, and the only one who could survive standing inside the seam long enough to hold it.Emilia asked what Voss meant to do with him once he was inside. The girl hesitated, and the static swelled and ebbed like breath. She said that Voss did not intend to close
