Seven Days Until doomsday

RAYNA

I stared at the red warning on my phone, reading the words again and again until the meaning finally settled inside my head. Seven days until the temperature collapsed, seven days until the power grid failed and the roads disappeared beneath ice, seven days until the world I remembered from my previous life returned.

I tightened my grip around the phone and forced myself to breathe. There was no time to panic. I had spent the first three days preparing for twenty-eight days, and now I had only one week left. I turned around and walked back into the villa, heading straight for the basement. The contractors were already moving the first steel beams into position, and the moment they saw me, the foreman hurried over with his helmet tucked beneath one arm.

“Mrs. Rayna, the insulation crew needs another six hours to finish the inner walls,” he said. “The storage vault can be sealed tomorrow if everything goes according to plan.”

“Tomorrow is too late,” I replied, looking at the half-finished walls. “I want this section completed tonight. Pay the workers double and bring in another crew if you have to. I don't care how many people you need. This basement must be sealed before morning.” The foreman nodded quickly. “Yes, ma'am. We'll do everything we can.”

“Don't do everything you can. Do whatever is necessary.”

I walked farther inside, checking the steel supports, ventilation ducts, thermal panels, and electrical lines one by one while the workers continued around me. The basement was already beginning to look less like part of a luxury villa and more like the fortress I had imagined, but I knew appearances meant nothing if the systems failed when the cold arrived.

“Mike,” I called as soon as I stepped back into the hallway, pulling out my phone and dialing his number.

He answered before the second ring. “Boss?”

“The timeline changed and we have seven days.”

There was silence on the line. “Seven days?” he repeated.

“Yes. I just received an official warning from the Global Meteorological Association. I need every order accelerated immediately… Food, medicine, fuel, generators, batteries, water tanks, thermal clothing, everything. If a supplier says delivery will take three days, pay for same-day delivery.”

“I'll make the calls right now.”

“And Mike?”

“Yes?”

“Cancel every unnecessary expense. I want all available cash moved into the emergency accounts. We don't have time to waste.”

“I understand.”

I ended the call and walked upstairs to Sera's room. My daughter was sitting on the carpet surrounded by colorful building blocks, carefully trying to balance a small plastic house on top of a tower. When she saw me, her face immediately brightened.

“Mummy!”

She jumped to her feet and ran into my arms. I caught her and lifted her against my chest, holding her tightly while she wrapped both arms around my neck.

“Why are you squeezing me so hard?” she asked, giggling.

“Because I missed you.”

“But you saw me this morning.”

“I know but I still missed you.”

She laughed and buried her face against my shoulder, and I closed my eyes for a moment, feeling the warmth of her little body against mine. In my previous life, I had lost this child because I trusted the wrong people. I would never make that mistake again.

“Mummy, can we go outside?”

“Not today, sweetheart.”

“Why?”

“Because the weather is going to become very cold soon.”

She looked toward the window. “Like winter?”

“Much colder than winter.”

Her small face became serious. “Will I be cold?”

I kissed her forehead. “No. Mommy won't let that happen.”

I carried her downstairs and took her into the kitchen, where one of the cooks was preparing lunch. I watched Sera eat while I checked the updated inventory list on my tablet, making sure every item had a delivery date. Rice, beans, canned meat, flour, oil, bottled water, medicine, batteries, fuel, blankets, thermal boots. The list was long, but seeing the numbers rise gave me a strange sense of calm.

Then my phone rang again.

It was Mike.

“Boss, we have a problem.”

My fingers stopped moving across the screen. “What happened?”

“Several suppliers are refusing to release their emergency stocks. The news about the weather warning has already leaked. People are buying everything they can find, and the warehouses are being emptied.”

“How many orders are affected?”

“Almost forty percent.”

I looked across the kitchen at Sera, who was happily eating her lunch without knowing that the entire world outside was beginning to change.

“Then buy the warehouses,” I said.

Mike went silent… “All of them?”

“All of them,” I answered. “If they refuse to sell individual supplies, offer to purchase the entire remaining inventory. Whatever price they demand, pay it.”

“Boss, that could cost millions.”

“I don't care.”

I ended the call and looked toward the windows. Outside, the autumn sunlight was still bright, the mountains still green, and the city below still looked completely normal… that was what frightened me most. The world still looked peaceful but I knew exactly what was coming. By tomorrow, people would begin to panic and when they did, money would no longer be enough to buy safety.

I called the security supervisor next and ordered him to double the guards around every entrance. “Nobody enters the estate without my permission,” I told him. “Not contractors, not delivery drivers, nobody. Check every vehicle twice before it crosses the gate.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

“And increase the night patrols. I don't want a single blind spot.”

After I hung up, I looked at Sera again. She was now asking the cook for another piece of chicken, completely unaware of the danger approaching us. I smiled at her and reached across the table to smooth her hair.

Whatever happened outside those walls, I would make sure she remained warm, fed, and safe. I had failed her once, I would not fail her again. Not this time, not ever again. I would protect her with everything I had.

The Cold Was Closing InRAYNAThe water pressure dropped again shortly after midnight. I was in the command room reviewing the latest fuel consumption figures when the maintenance supervisor rushed through the door, his expression immediately telling me that something had gone wrong. “Ma'am, we have another problem with the water system.”I put down the report. “What happened?”“The northern line is holding, but the pressure in the secondary distribution pipes has dropped. We've checked the connections twice but something is restricting the flow.”“Are you saying another pipe has frozen?”“We suspect so. The temperature has fallen considerably, and the insulation around some of the older connections may not be enough to withstand these conditions.”I stood and followed him toward the maintenance section. Lior was already there, speaking with two guards about the security arrangements. When he noticed me, he immediately ended the conversation and joined us.The supervisor brought up th

The Water We Could Not WasteRAYNABy midday, the temperature inside the villa had stabilized, but the storm outside had become even more violent. Snow continued gathering against the walls, covering the lower sections of the windows and burying the pathways that connected the main building to the storage and utility areas.I had barely finished reviewing the revised fuel allocation when the security supervisor entered the command room. “Mrs. Rayna, maintenance has reported a problem with the water supply.”I looked up immediately. “What problem?”“The pressure has dropped in the outer sections. Two of the pipes are no longer responding, and the workers suspect they may have frozen.”I closed the fuel report. “Has the main water supply stopped?”“Not completely…..the inner sections are still receiving water, but the pressure is falling.”I stood. “Take me to the maintenance room.”Lior, who had been checking the security arrangements, followed us downstairs. The maintenance superviso

RAYNAThe first warning came before sunrise. I was still in bed when the alarm from the command room sounded through the villa. It was not the usual security alert. This one was longer, sharper, and followed by the announcement that made my stomach tighten.“Thermal system warning….backup power has been activated.”I pushed the blankets aside and reached for my robe. Lior stirred beside me, already waking. “What happened?” he asked.“I don't know yet.”We hurried to the command room, the security supervisor was standing in front of the control panels, studying the readings. Several sections of the thermal grid were marked in yellow, while the main power supply showed that the system had switched to its backup source.“Explain,” I demanded.“The storm buried most of the solar panels overnight,” he replied. “The batteries were already carrying a heavy load, and the charge dropped below the required level and the generator has taken over.”I looked at the external temperature reading, it

RAYNABy the time I entered the main hall the following morning, the villa was already awake. The kitchen staff were preparing breakfast, two guards were changing shifts near the entrance, and the maintenance team had gathered around a table covered with tools and repair lists. It was an ordinary scene, almost painfully ordinary considering the world outside.A few months earlier, most of these people had been strangers to one another. Now they shared meals, work, responsibilities, and the same uncertain future. We had survived the first disasters, but keeping a group of people alive through an endless winter required more than locked gates and full storerooms, it required cooperation.Leo approached with a notebook in his hand. “The department heads are waiting in the meeting room.”“Did something happen?”“No emergency. We finished the weekly reports, and there are a few things they want to discuss.”I followed him inside… Lior was already there, standing beside the large table. He

  • REBORN THIRTY DAYS BEFORE THE ICE AGE APOCALYPSE    31: The Work Of Living

RAYNAThe morning after Lior's return, I woke to the sound of Sera laughing. For a few seconds, I remained beneath the blankets, listening. Her laughter had become one of the few sounds I never grew tired of hearing. It reminded me that despite everything the world had taken from us, my daughter was still capable of being happy.I got out of bed, pulled on my warm clothes, and followed the sound downstairs. Lior was sitting on the floor beside her, helping her arrange the little wooden animals he had made. The wooden rabbit she had given him before his journey was sitting among them."Mommy!" Sera called when she noticed me. "Look! Daddy brought my rabbit back."I smiled, glancing at Lior. "I can see that.""He kept it safe," she added proudly."I made a promise," Lior replied, lifting the rabbit and placing it in her hands. "And I intend to keep every promise I make to you."Sera hugged it against her chest before returning to her toys. I watched them for a moment, feeling something

RAYNAI checked the clock for the third time in less than ten minutes. Lior had promised to contact me before beginning the return journey, but the radio remained silent. The communications supervisor stood beside me, monitoring the frequency while I studied the map spread across the table. The expedition had already travelled farther than any team from the villa since the temperature collapsed. Although they had gathered useful information, I wasn't interested in extending the journey simply to see how much farther they could go. I wanted them home.I picked up the radio and pressed the transmission button. "Lior, this is Rayna. Do you copy?"Static filled the room. I waited a few seconds before trying again. "Lior, report your position." His voice finally came through. "We're preparing to leave the junction now."I immediately straightened. "What's your assessment?""The road ahead is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate. There's a heavy accumulation of snow along the edges
