Serena’s POV

“My wife did not deserve what happened to her.” Adrian’s voice filled the room quietly from the television screen. I sat frozen at the edge of the bed.

The cameras flashed endlessly around him while reporters shouted questions from every direction, but Adrian barely reacted. He stood there in a black suit, looking exhausted in a way I had never seen before.

For a moment, he almost looked sincere.

“I ask everyone to respect my family’s privacy during this difficult time,” he continued calmly.

“Family,” I muttered. That word felt bitter now, I stared at the screen without blinking.

This was the same man who stood silently while another woman discussed divorcing me like I was disposable.

The same man I overheard planning a future without me. And now he was standing before the entire country acting like a grieving husband. My fingers curled slightly against the blanket.

Leonard remained near the window behind me, silent while the broadcast continued.

One reporter suddenly shouted louder than the others. “Mr. Laurent! Is it true your wife discovered your affair hours before the accident?”

Everything paused, Adrian stopped moving completely. The cameras zoomed closer instantly. That silence lasted barely three seconds, but it was enough for me to see the guilt.

My stomach churned with disgust

Adrian finally continued walking without answering the question. The reporters exploded again but I wasn’t listening anymore.

My mind drifted back to the hotel suite.

Celeste asking him when he planned to serve me divorce papers, mentioning how the partnership deal was already successful and they needed to discard me soon.

I remembered every word clearly. And suddenly—the accident no longer felt random. A strange dark feeling settled inside me.

What if Adrian knew?

What if he arranged everything to protect himself?

The thought shocked me the moment it appeared but it didn’t leave. It stayed there quietly while my mind kept replaying everything. From the cheating, the divorce, the timing, then the crash.

My head buzzed as if struck by lightning.

Adrian was cruel lately, but murder? No.

I closed my eyes briefly, but another memory flashed immediately.

The black SUV following my car closely, then hitting it from behind. I felt inexplicably irritated. I opened my eyes again slowly.

“What if?” I whispered slowly before stopping myself.

Leonard finally spoke from behind me. “You’re asking yourself the same question I did.”

I turned sharply toward him.

He walked closer calmly, holding a thin black folder in one hand.

“What question?” I asked carefully.

Leonard placed the folder beside me. “Whether your accident was really an accident.”

Silence filled the room instantly.

I stared at the folder without touching it. Then slowly, I opened it. My trembling fingers flipped through each page. One picture immediately caught my attention.

A black SUV parked outside a building, another image followed beneath it, a man stepping out of the vehicle. My breath seized for a second.

Adrian.

The picture was blurry but clear enough for me to recognize him.

I looked up immediately. “Where did you get this?”

“My people recovered surveillance footage from the city.”

My throat stiffened slightly.

The timestamp beneath the photograph showed the exact same night as the accident. I looked back at the image again, Adrian was beside the SUV.

The same kind of SUV that chased me before the crash. My thoughts became dangerously loud inside my head.

No, this could mean anything. But the doubt was already there now.

Leonard watched me carefully while I struggled silently with myself.

“He cheated on me,” I said quietly, almost like I was trying to convince myself. “But Adrian wouldn’t.”

“Wouldn’t what?” Leonard asked calmly.

I looked away, I couldn’t bring myself to say the words. I was stunned into silence.

Then he dropped another document in front of me. “Read page three.”

I flipped through the report slowly.

Halfway down the page, one sentence was highlighted. Secondary vehicle impact confirmed before crash point. My fingers tightened slightly around the paper.

“There was another car,” I whispered.

“Yes.”

The room suddenly felt colder again. My mind drifted unwillingly toward Adrian’s face on the television moments ago.

The guilt and silence.

Everything tangled together until I couldn’t separate emotion from logic anymore and somehow, the worst part was that a small part of me already believed it.

Leonard sat across from me afterward. “There’s something else,” he said quietly.

I looked up slowly with tired eyes. “What again?”

Instead of answering directly, he pulled another photograph from the folder and handed it to me, the second my eyes landed on it, my expression turned vague.

It was a picture of me holding a little boy. The child looked around four years old, smiling brightly while resting comfortably in my arms.

The image felt important, I tried to remember who the child is and why he felt so attached to me but no recognition came. My memory felt blurry, like it omitted an important part.

I looked at Leonard slowly. “Who is he?”

For the first time since I woke up, Leonard’s expression changed slightly, he looked concerned.

“You don’t remember him?”

I shook my head slowly.

The pressure behind my eyes worsened instantly. Fragments flashed briefly through my mind.

A child crying in the car. My car plunging into the ocean—then darkness.

I grabbed my head slightly, “what’s wrong with me?”

Leonard leaned forward calmly. “You suffered memory damage during the accident.”

I stared at the photograph again. The child looked deeply attached to me, so why couldn’t I remember him?

“Why do you have this picture?” I asked quietly.

Leonard studied me carefully before answering. “Because that child may be connected to the reason someone wanted you dead.”

My eyes snapped toward him instantly. “What?”

Before Leonard could answer, the door opened suddenly. One of the staff rushed inside looking visibly shaken.

“Sir…”

Leonard stood immediately. “What happened?”

The man swallowed hard before speaking. “Our security team intercepted someone attempting to access the estate servers.”

The room fell silent. Leonard’s expression darkened slightly.

“Who?”

The staff member hesitated, then he answered quietly.

“The access request came from Adrian Laurent’s private network.”

AVA'S POVI found the address three days ago, more by luck.It was through a mere conversation in a coffee shop I had stopped at to get a cup of latte. A woman whom I later knew as Petra, who had worked as a filing clerk for the city's regulatory office for twenty-two years had mentioned it in passing to a man she was talking to over coffee, that she remembered a property transfer connected to Redwater Holdings, she said it happened twice."Twice?" I asked before I could control myself.Petra looked at me in amazement, at the stranger suddenly meddling in her talk. Then, she nodded in affirmation."First time was standard. It was registered and filed correctly." Petra said. "Second time was three weeks later. Someone wanted the original registration amended. The address was changed on the principal correspondence record." She frowned slightly at the memory. "Which was unusual because you don’t amend correspondence addresses on a company registration without a reason. The company was

SELENE’S POV"His name is Gerald Fitch," Adrian said. "He was the lead investigator on the Westbridge accident four years ago. The investigation that went cold."I kept my expression neutral.Gerald Fitch. The name existed in the files I had assembled over the past four years. The man who had closed the investigation before it reached anything significant. "Where was this taken?" I asked."The building is a private storage facility in the east dock district," Adrian said. "Fitch visited it at three forty-one in the morning six days ago and stayed for approximately twenty-two minutes." He paused. "The facility has a registered tenant in the unit he accessed. The tenant name is a shell registration." Another pause. "The shell traces back to Redwater Holdings."The room felt very still suddenly. I stared at the photograph in front of me."Damien is moving his evidence," I said quietly."Or destroying it," Adrian said. "Fitch wouldn't be making a visit at such early hours of the morning,

SELENE'S POVI arrived at the municipal library first, twelve minutes before Adrian. The library smelled exactly the way I remembered it.Old paper, cedar wood and some faint metallic smell from the heating system that had probably not been updated since the building was renovated in the nineties. The kind of smell that existed in layers, each one belonging to a different decade of the same place. The third floor reading room was empty the way it always was on weekday mornings. Four long tables and wooden chairs with the specific discomfort of furniture built for function rather than comfort. Tall windows that let in grey morning light without warmth. A row of reference shelves along the far wall that nobody consulted anymore because everything they contained existed faster and more completely on a screen.I chose the table in the far corner, back to the wall with clear sightline to the door and both staircases.I sat down and placed my phone on the table and waited.Floyd had sent a

SELENE'S POV I picked up my phone and called Adrian, he answered on the second ring. "I need to meet," I said the moment he answered. The document was still spread across my desk and the specific cold clarity of what I had read was still sitting in my chest like a weighty object. There was a brief pause on his end. "When?" "Now, but not at the office. Not anywhere with cameras." There was another pause, shorter than the first. "Give me forty minutes." He ended the call without asking why. I stood from the desk and went to the bar, I poured whiskey into a glass and stood holding it while I thought about what I was going to tell Adrian and what I was going to keep. The Leonard document couldn't go to Adrian whole. Not yet. The full revelation that the man who had rebuilt me had been stealing the inheritance I was entitled to for years cannot be disclosed yet. Not to Adrian. To him I was Selene. Not Serena! Selene Arden. I was still working through exactly where the line sho

SELENE'S POVThe document arrived through Clara at nine in the morning, flagged urgent, sourced from the secure archive channel Martin Reeves had been using before he went dark.Which meant Reeves had not gone entirely dark and he had chosen this specific moment to resurface what he had been holding back deliberately.Clara placed the envelope on my desk without opening it, which was her way of telling me she had read the cover notation and understood it was meant for me alone. I thanked her and waited until she closed the door before I picked it up.Inside was a single document. Eight pages, dense with financial records, corporate registration histories and a genealogical summary that looked like it had been assembled by someone with access to records that didn't exist in any public archive.I read the first page standing up.Then I sat down and read it again from the beginning. The inheritance claim connected to my mother's family line. ADRIAN'S POVThe Laurent residence on Marchfield Avenue had not changed in thirty-five years. That was the thing about houses maintained by women like Victoria Laurent, they didn't change because change implied that the original arrangement had been insufficient, and insufficiency was not a condition Victoria acknowledged in anything she controlled. The same pale wallpaper in the entrance hall. The same arrangement of white flowers on the console table replaced weekly by the same florist for two decades. The same smell of the house, something between cedar and expensive candles, that had lived in my memory since childhood as the smell of a place where performance was the primary language.I arrived at few minutes past seven in the morning. Damien was already there, standing near the fireplace in the main sitting room with a drink in his hand, his posture carrying its usual ease. He looked at me when I entered and raised the glass slightly as a greeting that was also a confirmation. *
