Senna

I thought I was the only one playing a dangerous game, but I was just a pawn on a board I hadn’t even realized was set. My hands were folded in my lap, stiff, as I looked at the old man across me. Elder Orin sat in his heavy wooden chair, his sightless eyes fixed somewhere just to the left of my face.

"How?" I whispered. My voice sounded thin in the quiet room.

Orin leaned forward, his gnarled hands gripping the arms of his chair. "The moon does not send people back without reason, Senna.

  • REBORN TO BREAK YOU   CHAPTER 52: SERA'S VOICE

SennaMy mother told me I would be alone long before she actually got killed. She said it in the kitchen when I was fourteen years old, and I didn’t understand what she meant until I woke up in a different body. I am standing at the infirmary window in the Ironblood compound right now, watching a woman in the village below. She just picked up her little boy because he tripped on a rock. She hugged him hard, then she wiped his face and pushed him toward their house. My chest feels tight. It is a Maren feeling, not a Senna feeling. It is a memory trying to break out of my skin.Fourteen years old was a bad year. It was a bad week. The compound felt like a cage that was getting smaller every day. I couldn't stop crying, but I didn't want anyone to see me do it. I waited until midnight to go to the kitchen to get some water. The floor was cold on my feet. I thought the house was empty, but Mama was sitting at the table. She had a bowl of dough in front of her. She wasn't making bread. She

  • REBORN TO BREAK YOU   CHAPTER 51: TECHNICALLY TRUE

CaiusIt wasn't a choice I wanted to make. Not even close.Dax stood in my office, quiet like always. He didn't wave his hands or talk loud. He just put the paper on my desk."Alpha," he started, his voice flat. "I have something to report about Senna."My stomach tightened, but my face didn't move. I gave him a small nod. He knew what that meant. Speak."I never stopped trying to track her movements," he said. "Routine checks. Standard."I knew what standard meant for Dax. He checked everything, everyone. He was my eyes. He’d been with me since I took over the Ironblood Pack, six years ago. Dax was the first one to fall in line, seeing what I was. He saw the strength, the certainty. So when Dax brought me something, it wasn’t gossip. It was fact, hard and cold."I found eleven inconsistencies," he continued. He didn't look at me, but at the wall behind my head. "Individually, each one has an explanation. They can be explained away. Together, they form a picture I can't account for."

SennaI thought I was the only one playing a dangerous game, but I was just a pawn on a board I hadn’t even realized was set. My hands were folded in my lap, stiff, as I looked at the old man across me. Elder Orin sat in his heavy wooden chair, his sightless eyes fixed somewhere just to the left of my face."How?" And when she does, they carry the shape of what they were.""I don't understand," I said, though my heart was hammering against my ribs."I never saw your face," he said, his voice soft and raspy. "I am blind, so I have never made a visual comparison to the girl who died in Ashveil. But you have her grief. You carry it in the way you hold your shoulders, the way you pause before you speak. I knew Maren. I presided over her naming ceremony when she was born."I felt a sharp, sudden jolt in my ch

  • REBORN TO BREAK YOU   CHAPTER 49: THE SECOND DOCUMENT

SennaI should have looked closer the first time. Sometimes your brain sees the big words and skips the small ones. I needed to go back to the records room. I grabbed a clipboard and a stack of inventory forms, making sure I looked like just another busy healer doing her boring supply check. The records room was quiet and smelled like old paper and dust. I moved things until I found the diplomatic arrangement sub-record. My hands were shaking a little bit, but I kept them steady because I have a job to do. I opened the record and flipped past the first few pages until I reached the supplemental understanding. I ignored the names at the top. I took a deep breath and looked right at the bottom, where the ink was dark and the signatures were cramped. There were two names. One was a steward I remembered from the old records, the one who quit and left the pack months ago. My eyes tracked over to the second one. My heart hit my ribs like a trapped bird.Elder Orin.He wasn't just a name. He

  • REBORN TO BREAK YOU   CHAPTER 48: THIRD MEETING

SennaAela was back. I saw her walking through the main hall, her face serious, her eyes moving like she was seeing everything and nothing all at once. My stomach twisted. It always did when she came. This wasn't a good thing, her being here for a third time. It meant things were moving. Fast.We didn't talk much in front of the others. We never did. Aela smiled a little at Vera, nodded at Dax, and then she looked at me. It was only for a second, but it felt like a whole conversation. Come on, her eyes said. We need to talk.A few minutes later, the main meeting was set up in the big room. They were going over border stuff, territory lines. Boring. I was just supposed to be there, listening, taking notes. But then Aela cleared her throat."Senna," she said, calm like always. "Can you come with me for a moment? I want to go over some of these supply allocations in the small room. Your input would be helpful."Dax looked at me. Vera looked at me. My heart thumped. But it was just to che

  • REBORN TO BREAK YOU   CHAPTER 47: LYRA IN THE CROSSFIRE

SennaThe sound of the soup tray hitting the floor was louder than any scream. “Watch where you’re going, girl,” a man named Kol said. He was a mid-level wolf, the kind who thinks being ranked means he can be a bully. He didn’t just trip her. He had stuck his foot out on purpose. I saw it from across the room while I was drinking my tea.Lyra was on her knees. She didn't look up. She started trying to pick up the broken pieces of ceramic with her bare hands. Her fingers were shaking.“I’m sorry,” Lyra whispered. “I’m so sorry. I’ll clean it up. I’ll get more.”Kol laughed and looked at his three friends. They were all sitting there, watching her like she was a show.“You’re a clumsy little thing, aren’t you?” Kol said. He kicked a piece of bread across the floor. “Maybe if you spent more time looking at the floor instead of trying to look at the warriors, you wouldn’t be such a mess.”“I wasn’t looking at anyone,” Lyra said. She sounded like she was going to cry. “Please, I’ll fix it
