Scarlett's POV

"Get out."

Two words was all he gave me.

I walked out of that VIP lounge with my chin up and my spine straight, because I would die before I let Dominic Vance see me crumble.

The heavy door clicked shut behind me, and the moment it did, my legs almost gave out. I pressed my back against the cold corridor wall and stayed there, just breathing.

The bass from the music downstairs vibrated through the floor and up through my heels, and I used it like a drumbeat to keep myself together.

He had dismissed me like I was a nonentity, which, fine, was technically what I was, but that was not the point. The point was that in my previous life, he had not been able to keep his hands off me by the third minute. He had been warm, intense and hungry.

This Dominic of today was none of those things.

This Dominic was a wall.

I pressed my fist to my sternum and forced myself to think straight. He had seen through every move I made. The dropped glass, the stumble, the "Daddy."

He had clocked all of it without blinking, which meant either he was sharper than I recalled, or he had changed somehow. And this change is something I did not have the information to understand yet.

I pushed off the wall and walked.

The staircase opened up to the main floor and the noise hit me all at once. The sound of music, laughter, glass on themselves and the thick sweet smell of perfume covered with cigarette smoke.

I saw Luca before he saw me. He was standing near the bar with a drink in his hand, and his eyes found me the second my foot hit the bottom step. He straightened.

"Well?" he said, with a low voice and with eyes moving over my face the way a typist scans a document for errors.

"Give me time." I said.

I stated the expression like I'm narrowing facts in an essay. Luca was good at reading people though. I had spent two years watching him do it to everyone around him, so I gave him nothing to read.

He watched me for four full seconds.

Then he nodded, he looked satisfied, then he brought his glass to his lips. "Don't take too long, Scarlet. You know father isn't a patient man."

"Neither am I," I said sweetly, and turned away before he could answer.

I moved through the crowd toward the far end of the bar, needing distance and a moment to breathe without Luca's eyes scanning me. I lifted a glass of water from a passing tray, pressed the cold surface against the inside of my wrist, and stared at the bottles lined up behind the counter.

Suddenly, I felt it.

A specific gaze, which  a normal human feels on the back of their neck like a finger trailing along one's skin.

I turned.

Zara.

She was standing near the stage with one hand resting on her hip, a champagne flute loose between her fingers, watching me. The red lights hit her face and she looked like a new artistic paint. She smiled when my eyes found hers like we were sharing a joke I had not been told.

My stomach turned to snow.

I did not smile back, I only  held her gaze for exactly three seconds, then looked away, because looking away first was the smart move, reacting was the stupid one but my pulse had kicked up and my fingers tightened around the glass.

Did she know?

Could she know?

I went home early. I told Luca I had a headache, which he accepted without interest because my headaches had never been his problem before and tonight was no different. The drive back to the mansion was dark and silent as usual.

Scarlett VanceEvery nerve in my body was awake. Not from fear. From something else I couldn’t quite name.He stood fifteen feet away and yet the air between us felt tight.Pressurized.Like the room had too much heat trapped inside it.His jaw was set.His eyes had not moved from mine.He looked like a man who had already made his decision and was waiting to see if I was smart enough to agree with it.I met his gaze evenly.“Very clear,” I said. Then I added softly.“Father.”Something shifted in his expression.Fast.Small.Controlled.His jaw tightened slightly. His eyes hardened—not colder, just sharper. He didn’t like that. The word Father in my voice bothered him in a way he had not expected. And watching him work to hide that reaction was one of the quietest, most satisfying moments I had experienced in either of my lives. He dropped his arms.Turned back toward the window. The conversation was already finished in his mind.“You start tonight,” he said.“The usual time.”“Under

Scarlett Vance“The Alpha wants you in his study, now.”Lyra delivered the message without looking directly at me.Pack members always spoke like that when the words came from Dominic Vance.I was sitting at the vanity in the bedroom, halfway through pinning my hair up.My hands stopped. His study. Not the VIP lounge. Not the clubhouse. His private study in the east wing of the mansion. Behind a door I had passed many times but never entered. In my previous life he had never once called me there. The lounge was where he received people. The study was where he dealt with them.I slowly placed the hairpin down on the table.I stood up.I smoothed my dress with both hands. Then I looked at myself in the mirror.Three steady seconds. My face was calm.My eyes were not.“Tell him I’m on my way,” I said.Lyra nodded and left. The room felt quieter after the door closed.I exhaled slowly. The walk to the east wing felt longer than it should have.Every step gave my mind space to run through

Dominic’s POV She climbed out of his damn bed and started running his errands again. My jaw tightened. My wolf went very quiet. Not calm.Furious.I picked up my phone. It rang twice before he answered.“Boss.”“Watch my daughter-in-law,” I said. “Every move, every conversation and every person she looks at longer than five seconds.”I paused.“I want to know where she goes, what she says and who she says it to. Nothing gets missed.”A short silence answered me.“I’m already watching her, boss,” Marco said carefully. “But there’s something you should know.”My eyes narrowed slightly.“She went to the pack’s records room this morning,” he continued. “Before she came to see you.”I said nothing.“She was in there eleven minutes. I checked the entry log. She accessed the territorial boundary files… and the biker ledgers.”The exact same files. In our previous life, those were the files she copied and handed to Luca. The files he used to gut my entire operation from the inside.Three bro

Dominic’s POV“Get out.”The words had come out of my mouth with ease. Giving no room for argument, clean and final. But she was barely out the door before my hand—the one holding the glass—started to shake.I sat in my study now, alone, the way I preferred to be. The whiskey was still full. I had not touched it. I had been staring at it for forty minutes, watching the amber liquid sit perfectly still in the glass while everything inside me was the opposite of still.I could still smell the fire if I let myself. Gasoline and smoke. And underneath both of those… jasmine.Scarlett screaming my name with her hands stretched toward me while the chains kept her just out of reach. The flames climbing her legs and the heat tearing through the warehouse while Luca stood there smiling. And I could not move.Because Luca's men had put three bullets in me.Because my body had already begun the slow, humiliating work of dying.“If there is a next life… do not choose him, Scarlett.” Those had been

Scarlett's POV I sat in the back of the car, then stared out the window and felt the weight of the evening pressing down on me like a nail on my chest. Our bedroom was cold as usual. Luca kept the heating low on his side and I had stopped fighting about it six months into our marriage, which perhaps briefed you everything you needed to know about how our marriage went. I changed out of the dress and sat on the edge of the bed in the darkness, running to the VIP lounge over and over again in my head like a recording on my playlist. His voice came around like a pinch. A whisper of domination."You're not this clumsy.""Stop seducing me.""Whatever foolish mission you think you're on."I stood still and speechless. Mission? He had used that word once before I dropped the glass, when I first walked in and he looked at me. "Why does my daughter-in-law suddenly look like she is here on another mission?" And then he used it again at the end. Two times in one conversation, and I had bee
