"You came," Amiriam said, her tone hard but gentle, the way a low-burning candle never wavers.

Luke stood in the doorway of the back garden of the clinic, late-afternoon sunlight casting long shadows on the pathway of stone. Dust motes floated peacefully in the air, like tiny stars in the golden light. He nodded slowly, stepping forward as if the garden itself had beckoned him.

"I didn't know if I should," he said, thumbs stuffed deep in the pockets of his jacket. His voice was hesitant, but optimistic.

Amiriam gestured toward the bench beneath the jacaranda tree. Its branches curved like a guardian's protection, spilling delicate lavender flowers that fell unobtrusively to the lawn below. "Let's sit," she said.

They walked side by side in a quiet that was not uncomfortable or cold. Only the leaves underfoot disturbed, and the distant hum of the city muffled by the garden walls. The songs of birds rang out in the trees above, and the scent of jasmine lingered in the air.

Amiriam sat,

"Are you sure that you want to do this tonight?" Amiriam asked quietly, her voice breaking the stillness of the evening.Luke glanced over at her as they walked slowly down the gravel driveway that headed into the garden behind the Oden estate. "I've been sure for a while. Just never finding the nerve to bring you here."The stillness of night closed around them like a cloak. Scent of jasmine and roses mixed with the sweet, damp musk of wetted earth. It was peaceful—too peaceful, it seemed, for what lingered in the air between them.Amiriam looked straight. Lanterns glowed softly among the hedges, as if ready to watch something sacred. "Your mother's garden?"Luke nodded. "Yeah. She did all the flower planting herself. Even when she was sick, she'd come out here. Said it helped her breathing."Amiriam hesitated. "I remember her hands. They were always filthy. She'd still ask you for a cup of tea like nothing was wrong."He laughed a short, almost-sentimental laugh. "She was like that.

"Luke! Luke, hurry!"James's high-pitched yell cut the quiet morning like the sharp report of a starter's pistol, dispelling Saturday's gentle hum. Luke nearly spilled coffee as he jumped from the kitchen table, his heart pounding at the urgency in his little brother's voice."Only for this morning!" James exclaimed, racing into the living room where he stood proudly, holding a single sheet of paper between his small hands.James was wearing pajamas with a dinosaur on them, hair standing up in every direction, but his eyes were sparkling with excitement. "We did essays at school yesterday," he announced quickly. "Miss Clara said we could do our hero. I picked mine."Luke exhaled, releasing his shoulders. "You scared me. I thought something was wrong."James beamed and thrust the paper into his hands. "Just read it!"Luke took it out and sat on the couch with James in his lap. The boy squirmed with hardly-contained enthusiasm as Luke read through the messy scrawl and many-colored stars

"You're shaking," Amiriam murmured, her voice barely more than a whisper in the still quiet of the rooftop.Luke stood beside her, leaning against the cool metal railing while the city lights flickered to life below them. Sunset had hemorrhaged into gentle twilight, casting dusky gold over her face. He didn't answer immediately—just let the silence stretch out between them like a thread under tension."I'm not scared," he eventually said, then laughed low and harsh beneath his breath. "Well. perhaps a bit. Not of you. Just what this implies."Amiriam's fingers touched his. The contact was light, gentle. She didn't move him nearer to her or urge him to speak. She merely stood with him, her presence steady like the skyline at their backs."Then don't say anything yet," she said, her eyes on the horizon. "Let's just be here. Let's just breathe."Luke closed his eyes and exhaled. He had been holding his breath, he realized. Maybe for weeks. Maybe for years. He hadn't intended the rooftop.

"You remembered the coffee shop," Amiriam stated, a hint of surprise in her voice as she walked over to the small table Luke occupied, two steaming mugs in front of him.Luke looked up, a guarded smile on his lips. "Of course. It's where we had our first decent conversation.".She sat opposite him, holding the steaming cup in her hands. "That was a lifetime ago.""In a manner of speaking, it was," he agreed, his gaze meeting hers. "But I'd like us to create some new ones."Amiriam nodded slowly, taking a sip of her drink. The comfortingly familiar taste was a balm, and it served to anchor her in the present. They were silent for a bit, the ambient noise of the coffee shop filling in the lulls in their conversation."James asked about you yesterday," Luke broke the silence. Her eyes softened. "How is he?""He's okay. Still drawing dragons and insisting they're real. He misses you."A smile tugged at her lips. "I miss him too."Luke reached into his bag and pulled out a small, crumpled

"Today is an open circle. If you're comfortable, you may share." Dr. Reiner's words drifted gently across the room, a gentle wave soothing the stormy seas of emotion that too often churned and ebbed in the therapy room. The chairs were arranged in a circle, as usual—simple, bare, and somehow consecrated in their silent concord. Amiriam sat at the window, the light casting soft shadows on her face. Before her, a leather-bound volume worn from years of unconscious handling quivered in her hands, edges torn, pages yellow with years of silent suffering and stifled healing.Dr. Reiner nodded. "Amiriam?"She breathed slowly. "This one was September 2020," she said, opening the book. "The week following. all of it."Beyond the door ajar in the back of the room, a figure waited—invisible, unheard, pounding heart. Luke Oden shouldn't have been there. He wasn't asked. But Richard had mentioned casually that the clinic hosted the occasional open circles. And when he'd seen the illegibly scrawled
