Hazel's POV

“That handwriting belongs to my mother,” Julian said, staring at the note like it might vanish if he blinked, “and she died believing my father would never come back for anything.”

I sat beside him on the floor of our study, the fireproof box open between us, the signing document that would end Marcus's legal claim resting safely on top of a decade old warning written by a woman who had apparently seen this exact betrayal coming long before either of us ever did.

“She knew,” I said

POV: Hazel"Julian, get away from that microphone," I begged under my breath, though he was far too distant to hear me. "Whatever you are about to say, it is not yours to carry. I never asked you to be my shield."He stood alone on the stage under a white spotlight. His tie was perfectly straight. His hands were not. I could see them trembling from where I stood, and I knew that every person in the ballroom could see it too."My name is Julian Daniel," he began. "Most of you know me as the Ice King. You have read that name in newspapers for years. Tonight I would like to explain why it fits."A murmur ran through the crowd. Cameras lifted higher."The recording you heard was cut and rearranged. My wife's real words were different, and they were kinder to me than I deserved. But I will not stand here and let her defend herself against a story that I wrote.""Julian," I whispered."Five years ago, I thought I owed Hazel Daniel everything. I never told her how I felt. I never told her an

POV: Hazel"Is that really her voice?" a woman whispered as the ballroom speakers crackled. "She says she never loved him. She says the limp was theater, and the marriage was only business." Every head in the room turned toward me.I had been smiling a second before. I wore an emerald gown that Diane had pinned herself, and my hair was twisted into the old dancer's knot. Ashford Hall glittered around me like the inside of a jewel box. Crystal chandeliers dripped light. Waiters carried trays of champagne. At the front of the room, a velvet covered easel held the first painting of the auction, and the host stood beside it with a golden gavel. Then the sound system hissed, and my own voice filled the ballroom."I never loved him. The limp was only a performance. A marriage is a contract, and I signed it."I knew each word. I had said every one of them. But I had said them in a different order, in a different year, to Diane, over a bad phone line from a physical therapy room. What I had r

POV: Hazel"Everyone stop talking and listen," Robert said, tapping the whiteboard with a marker. "If we lose one piece of this tonight, Penelope walks free and Julian carries the whole thing alone. Hazel, you start. What do we really have?"It was nearly two in the morning in Reyes's private office. Cold coffee sat in paper cups on every surface. A young technician named Pike hunched over a laptop in the corner, headphones around his neck. On the whiteboard, someone had drawn six empty boxes and numbered them. I stood in front of them the way I used to stand in front of a mirror before a hard routine. Count it out. Do one step at a time."Piece one," I said. "The Row F recording. Fifteen minutes long. We have only heard three. It proves Vincent and Madame Voss planned the accident. It does not say who gave the orders."Robert wrote it down. "Two?""Samuel's notebook," Diane said. She sat curled in a chair with a blanket around her shoulders. "Sixty eight pages of payments. It proves

POV: Hazel"You paid me for five years, Julian," I said, and I laid the thick envelope between us like a knife. "Say the number out loud. Tell me what my loyalty cost. I want to hear what I was worth."It was past nine at night, and the kitchen was too bright. A kettle ticked on the stove as it cooled. The envelope had come from his lawyer weeks ago, and I had never opened it until tonight. Inside, under a gold clip, was a single page. At the bottom, in neat black type, stood a line that read compensation for five years of service. The number beside it had too many zeros.Julian stood on the other side of the counter in his shirt sleeves, tie gone, hair untidy. He looked at the page, then at me. "I wrote it because I did not know how to say I am sorry in any other language.""In money.""In the only language I was ever taught.""I am not a bill, Julian." My voice shook, and I let it. "I am not a debt you settle so you can sleep. Do you know what that page says to me? It says the last

POV: Hazel"Do not step on the third stair," I said, and my own voice sounded like a stranger's. "It always squeaked. And once, during my final bow, I heard someone breathing behind that wall. I never told anyone. I thought I imagined it."Reyes stopped with one boot in the air. Behind me, Julian and Robert held their flashlights steady. The Alder Theater smelled exactly as it always had, of dust and rosin and old red velvet. Gray morning light leaked through the high windows. On the bare stage the ghost light stood in its wire cage, one yellow bulb humming to itself like a lonely song.Robert glanced at the empty seats rising into the dark. "It feels like a church," he said."It was one for me," I answered. "I confessed everything I had to this floor.""Did it ever answer you?""Once," I said. "On my last night, it felt like it was holding its breath."I had not stood in this place since the night of the accident. My feet remembered every board. The creak by the piano on the left. Th

POV: Hazel"Do not look at me like that, child," Madame Voss whispered. "I spent five years waiting for you to hate me. Please, hate me now. It will be easier than watching you try to understand me."Reyes had given us ten minutes in a small meeting room off the boardroom. A pitcher of water sweated on the table. Madame Voss sat in a chair that was too big for her, her cane across her knees. Her bun had come loose, and one white strand curled against her cheek. In twenty years I had never once seen that strand out of place.Julian stood in the doorway. I felt him there like heat from a stove. "I am staying," he said quietly.I turned to him. "Julian, please. Wait outside.""She is dangerous, Hazel.""She is seventy years old and she is crying," I said. "You decide everything quietly, and you fix everything before I can speak. Let me decide this one."His jaw tightened. For a moment the Ice King looked at me through his own tired eyes, and I saw exactly what it cost him. Then he nodded
