Scent Of Rebellion

The courtyard incident changed everything. I was no longer just the pack’s rejected servant. I was the Alpha’s choice. I was the reason the two powerful princes of the Moonlight Pack had been publicly humiliated by their own father.

The house turned ice cold around me. The servants were terrified to talk to me. If I walked by, they dropped their eyes. They moved faster. They knew the twins hated me, but now they knew Alpha Claude would protect me. Fear of the Alpha was the only thing that kept me safe.

But Alpha Claude was not safe.

I started seeing the shift right away. The princes did not yell at me anymore. They started attacking their father's rule.

I would be in the study, and the door would burst open. Zayne and Zack would march in, talking fast and loud to their father, not even looking at me.

“Father, we cannot send the south patrol through the Whispering Canyon this week!” Zayne would argue.

“That is my order, Zayne. The Canyon is the fastest route to the border,” Alpha Claude would say, his voice tight.

“But the Red Moon pack is known to cut through there! We should go the long way around!” Zack would shout. “You are making the pack vulnerable!”

Alpha Claude would stand up. “I made this decision. I know what I am doing.”

They would leave, slamming the door. But a few hours later, I would hear the guards talking.

“The Princes told us to take the long route, even though the Alpha said the canyon. Which order do we follow?”

They were creating confusion. They were making their father look weak and unsure. They wanted the pack to doubt him.

Alpha Claude grew quieter. His eyes always looked tired. He spent more time with me. It was the only place he did not have to fight.

He continued to teach me chess. I was learning fast.

“You see, Rayna,” he said one night, moving a pawn to block his own Queen. “Sometimes you have to sacrifice the smaller piece to protect the larger game. It looks like a loss, but it’s a necessary move.”

“Like your sons,” I said quietly. The words just came out.

He stopped breathing. He looked up from the board. His face was full of pain.

“They are not pieces, Rayna. They are my blood. But yes. They are acting like they want to be sacrificed.”

He put the piece down. He sighed heavily.

“I know what they are trying to do. They are trying to show the pack that I am unfit to rule. That I am distracted by the servant girl.”

“They are winning,” I told him honestly. “I hear the whispers. They say you are letting a traitor’s blood cloud your judgment.”

He looked straight at me. “That is why I need to show them the judgment is clear.”

He stood up. “Come. We are leaving the house for a while. We need to talk where the walls don’t listen.”

I followed him out of the back door. We shifted almost immediately. I was only eighteen and still clumsy in my wolf form, but I was strong. Alpha Claude’s wolf was huge, pitch black, and terrifyingly silent.

He led me deep into the woods. We were far from the pack house, where the air was clean and smelled only of pine and wet dirt. We shifted back. I felt a nervous flush. This was too private.

He leaned against a massive oak tree. “When I was younger, I thought leadership was about strength. Now I know it’s about knowing who to trust.”

“You trust me, Alpha?” I asked. “I am the daughter of the people you killed.”

“That is why I trust you,” he said. “You have no reason to love this pack. But you didn't leave when you ran. And you came to me with the truth about my sons’ poison plot.”

He looked away, across the trees. “About your parents. I told you I regretted it. I want you to know why. Your mother was found with old patrol logs. They said she was selling them to the enemy. But those logs were from a year ago. They were useless. And there was no gold, no reward. Just the logs.”

“They were useless?”

“Yes. But the Elders wanted them gone. They were scared of any whisper of treason. I was strong-armed. I let fear rule me. I have always carried that shame, Rayna.”

He looked back at me, his eyes dark. “I owe you more than a clean room. I owe you justice.”

I did not know what to say. He was admitting his crime, his weakness. It made him seem less like the Alpha and more like a man. A lonely, burdened man.

He took a step toward me. The tension between us was so thick I could almost taste the cinnamon. The mate scent. It was still there, but muted, belonging to the princes. But something else was here. Something deep and heavy.

“Since my Luna died, I have not felt… human,” he said, his voice dropping to a low rumble. “Only a ruler. Only a soldier.” He took another step. He was close enough now that I could feel the heat from his skin. “You make me feel human, Rayna. You make me feel that life could return to this house.”

He was courting me. Not as the Alpha, but as Claude.

Before I could answer, a loud, familiar scent slammed into the clearing. Pine and power, but mixed with sweat and rage.

“They’re here,” I whispered, stepping back.

Zayne and Zack burst into the clearing. They were fully shifted, but immediately dropped to human form, breathing hard. They were furious.

“What is the meaning of this, Father?” Zack demanded. “A private meeting? In the woods? With the harlot?”

“This is none of your concern,” Alpha Claude snapped, stepping directly between me and his sons.

“It is entirely our concern!” Zayne yelled. He pointed a shaking finger at me. “You are allowing this traitor’s reject to seduce you! She wants power! She wants to steal our inheritance!”

“Rayna is under my care!” Alpha Claude roared, his voice cracking with Alpha command. “Enough! You will respect her!”

Zayne sneered, his eyes dark with malice. “Respect? You are blind, Father. You’re so desperate for a mate, you can't see the truth! She’s tearing us apart! You are losing the pack’s faith for a cursed piece of slave meat! And she'll pay the price for it!”

Zayne took a sudden, terrible step toward me, moving around his father’s shield.

Alpha Claude let out a deep, guttural sound of pure rage. He let go of his control and fully shifted. In a flash, the massive black wolf stood between me and Zayne. He was huge. Ready to kill.

Zayne, facing his father's Alpha Wolf, paused only for a second. Then, a chilling smile stretched across his face. He reached down to his boot and pulled out a long, thin, silver dagger. He ignored his father's massive snarl.

He took a calculated step toward me, his eyes locked on my throat, and brought the silver blade up. The moonlight glinted off the metal.

The world didn’t go completely black. It turned into a hazy, blurred red. The stone floor was freezing against my skin, but the pain in my side was a white-hot iron that made it hard to draw a single breath. Every gasp felt like swallowing broken glass. I could hear the chaos of the Great Hall, the snarls of wolves and the clatter of steel, but it all sounded like it was happening underwater. Then, the world shook. A shadow darker than the night fell over me. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of cedar and old forest. I felt massive, trembling hands slide beneath my back and knees. "Rayna! No, no, no... look at me!" Claude’s voice wasn't the voice of an Alpha anymore. It was the sound of a man being torn apart. He pulled me against his chest, his heart thudding so hard against my ear that it felt like a drum. I looked up, my vision swimming, and saw his face. His golden eyes were wide, leaking a raw, terrifying grief."I’m... I’m sorry," I wheezed, my blood staining his white

“Claude!” I screamed from the balcony, my voice breaking. His head snapped up.“Rayna!”“Don’t move!” Zayne shouted. He raised his sword higher. “One more step and this ends!”“Zayne,” Claude said, breathing hard. “Put the blade down.”“You lost the right to command me!” Zayne yelled. “The moment you chose her over blood!”“She is not your enemy,” Claude said. “Look around you. This chaos, this war, this is not because of her!”Zayne laughed, sharp and bitter. “You still protect her.”I ran down the stairs. A guard reached for me.“Let her pass!” Claude roared. The guard froze.I stood between them, shaking, the small dagger tight in my hand.“Zayne,” I said. “Please. Listen to me.”His eyes snapped to mine. They were wild.“You should be dead,” he said. “You ruined everything.”“No,” I said. “You were lied to.”“Enough!” he snapped. “I’m tired of lies!”“Elder Thomas framed my parents,” I said quickly. “He sold the pack’s secrets to Ironclaw. He used you. He used Zack. He used Mia.

It was Mia. She looked terrified. "They're coming for you," she whispered. "Not the princes. The others. You don't understand, Rayna... the locket isn't just a trophy. It’s a key."Before I could ask what she meant, a heavy blow hit the back of my head. The last thing I saw was the Ironclaw Alpha ripping the arrow from his shoulder and staring at me with a desperate, wild hope."Elena..." he gasped, as the darkness swallowed me whole. The first thing I felt was the dampness. It was a deep, bone-chilling cold that smelled of rot and old iron. My head throbbed with every heartbeat, a sharp reminder of the blow Mia had delivered. I tried to move my hands, but the rough bite of rope held my wrists tight against a wooden post.I wasn't in the Ironclaw camp. I wasn't even in the woods. The walls around me were made of the same ancient stone as the pack house basement, but this room was hidden. I had been a servant here for ten years, yet I had never seen this room. It was a secret

The wind howling across the balcony felt like a thousand needles against my skin. Down below, the torches of the Ironclaw army flickered like angry orange eyes. But my world had narrowed down to one thing: that silver locket resting against the chest of the Ironclaw Alpha."Claude," I whispered, my fingers digging into the cold stone of the railing. "The locket. He shouldn't have it. My mother was buried with that."Claude’s face was a mask of frozen fury. His eyes were locked on the men below ,his sons, and the monster they had brought to his doorstep. "I know," Claude rumbled. "I saw her wear it the day of the... the day it happened. If he has it, it means the grave was disturbed. Or she never made it to the ground."A chill that had nothing to do with the winter air settled in my bones. Zayne was shouting something from the clearing, his voice full of arrogance."Father!" Zayne’s voice finally broke through. "Send the girl down! We don't want your blood, only the throne you’ve tai

Echoes of the DeadThe silver blade didn’t hit me.At the very last second, Zayne’s hand faltered. Not from mercy but because the Alpha’s aura slammed into the clearing, so heavy it felt like the air itself had turned solid. My breath caught as Zayne stumbled, the dagger slicing the space an inch from my throat.Alpha Claude, in his massive wolf form, let out a sound I had never heard before ,a roar that was half beast, half anguished father. He lunged. One powerful swipe sent Zayne flying, his body crashing into the dirt.Silence fell, broken only by harsh breathing.Claude shifted back. He didn’t look at his sons. He came straight to me, his hands shaking as he checked my neck, my shoulders, his eyes frantic. When he saw I was unharmed, he pulled me into his chest.I buried my face in his shirt. He smelled like rain-soaked earth and pine. For a moment, I forgot everything else ,the clearing, the blood, the two men who were supposed to be my fated mates standing nearby with hatred in
