Elena's pov

I didn't open it in the car.

Marcus drove in silence, glancing at me every few minutes, and I sat with the envelope on my lap like it might combust if I looked at it wrong. Grant had left ahead of us, already on the phone with someone at his office, his voice tight and clipped through the parking lot glass before we'd even pulled out.

"You don't have to do it tonight," Marcus said, finally, as we turned onto his street.

"I know."

"You've had a full day, Elena. You don't owe anyone

Damian's pov Grant's office had become something close to a war room over the last three days, papers and folders covering every surface, and I found myself there again that morning, reading through the statement I was supposed to give at the vote, unable to get past the second paragraph without my hands going tight around the page."You're going to have to say it eventually," Grant said, watching me from across the desk. "Not just the parts about Cross. The parts about yourself too. The board needs to hear you acknowledge what actually happened, in your own words, or Cross's allies will use your silence against you.""I know what I need to say, Grant. Knowing it and being able to say it out loud in front of two hundred shareholders are two considerably different things.""Practice, then. On me, if nobody else feels safe enough."I set the page down and looked at him, this man who had spent thirty years quietly managing every crisis this family produced, cleared now of a betrayal th

Elena's pov Vanessa looked smaller in the hospital bed than she had in any room I'd ever seen her occupy before, the bandage near her temple stark against her pale skin, her free hand resting protectively over the small, still-flat curve of her stomach."The baby's fine," she said, before I'd even fully crossed the threshold, answering the question she'd clearly seen forming on my face. "Strong heartbeat, no signs of injury from the fall. They want to keep me another day for observation, given everything, but the doctor seems optimistic.""I'm glad." I meant it more than I expected to, standing there in the doorway of a room belonging to a woman who had spent months trying to destroy my life."You didn't have to come," Vanessa said. "Marcus told me you might, but I wasn't certain I believed him.""I wasn't entirely certain either," I admitted, pulling the chair closer to her bed and sitting down. "But Marcus told me what you said, out there in the woods. About wanting to be someone w

Ezra's pov The spreadsheet in front of me contained more columns than I had words to describe them, and after twenty minutes of staring at it, I finally admitted defeat and pushed back from the conference table entirely."I don't understand a single line of this," I said, rubbing my eyes. "Grant, I appreciate you trying to walk me through it, but I think we both know I'm currently the least qualified person in this building to be preparing a shareholder defense."Grant, seated across the table with a stack of his own documents, offered a tired but genuine smile. "You're the least qualified person in this building to write the defense. You're not the least qualified person to deliver it. There's a difference, Ezra, and it's the difference that's actually going to matter in four days.""Explain that to me, because right now it feels like the same problem wearing two different names.""A shareholder vote isn't won purely on financial literacy," Grant said, sliding the spreadsheet aside

  • REVENGE IN RED HEELS   Chapter Forty-Four: What Alistair Never Told Anyone

Elena's pov Grant's office felt considerably smaller than it had weeks ago, seven of us crowded around the same table that had once held nothing more complicated than a sealed DNA envelope, and I watched Marcus lay the folder down without a word, letting the silence stretch long enough that Grant's careful, practiced composure began, visibly, to crack."What is this," Grant said, though something in his voice told me he already suspected the answer wouldn't be simple."A wire transfer," Marcus said. "Eight months old, routed from one of Cross's shell accounts into a private account bearing your signature."The color drained from Grant's face entirely, and for one terrible, suspended moment, I watched thirty years of trust hang in the balance of whatever he said next."I've never seen that document in my life," Grant said, his voice shaking now. "Marcus, I swear to you, on everything I've ever built with this family, I have never received a single cent from that man.""I believe you,"

Marcus's pov I reached her first, my knees hitting the cold ground hard enough to bruise, and for one terrible, suspended second I couldn't tell if the stillness in her body meant the worst thing I could imagine or simply that she'd fainted somewhere along that narrow, rocky path."Vanessa." I pressed two fingers against her throat, relief flooding through me at the faint, unsteady pulse still beating there. "Priya, she's alive, but she's cold, and there's blood near her temple."Priya dropped beside me, already pulling out her phone despite the weak signal, her voice steady in the particular way I'd noticed she got whenever the situation demanded it most. "I'll call for help. You keep her warm, keep talking to her, anything to keep her responsive."I shrugged off my jacket and laid it over Vanessa's shoulders, and to my relief, her eyelids fluttered, a soft, disoriented groan escaping her as consciousness slowly returned."Vanessa, can you hear me? It's Marcus. You're safe now."Her

Marcus's pov The drive north took us through three hours of increasingly narrow roads, pine trees crowding closer on either side the further we got from the city, and somewhere around the second hour, Priya's laptop chimed with a notification that made her sit up sharply in the passenger seat."Marcus, pull over for a second. I need to actually look at this properly."I found a gravel turnout overlooking a stretch of coastline just visible through gaps in the trees, and cut the engine, watching Priya's face shift through several expressions in quick succession as she scrolled."My forensic accountant contact finally got back to me on the deeper account history," she said. "The one who owed me a favor from that pension fraud story last year. Marcus, I think we've been reading this wrong. We assumed Cross was paying Vanessa this entire time, funding her position, her lifestyle, the whole arrangement. That's true, partly. But there's something else buried underneath it.""What kind of s
