CHLOE'S POV

I should have known this perfect day wouldn’t last.

Things had been going too well. The necklace still glittered gently on my neck the bracelet clinked softly every time I moved my wrist—a reminder that I was finally getting everything I wanted. A family. A rich and good-looking man who truly cared for me. A son who loved me—or at least believed I was his mother.

As we made our way out of the restaurant the sunlight felt unusually warm against my skin and the breeze just light enough to be pleasant. Jamie had one hand in mine and the other swinging joyfully in the air still gushing about his meal and how much he loved the dessert. Austin smiled as he listened, walking beside me, content and relaxed.

And then it shattered.

"Chloe?"

That voice.

I stopped in my tracks. The hairs on the back of my neck stung. The sweet warmth in my chest turned to ice. I slowly turned and there he was.

Nick.

He was standing just a few feet away hands in his pockets with an amused smirk curling

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Thinking through the panic

AUSTIN’S POV “How the hell does someone just vanish from a hospital?” I asked, raising my voice slightly at the hospital staff standing at the front desk.I couldn’t stop pacing. My heart was pounding. I’ve asked the nurses, the security guards and even some random patient’s relatives if they had seen Chloe. No one had.My thoughts were spiraling—what if Jamie was crying? Scared? What if he thought I abandoned him? What if she’d already—“Austin!”I spun around at the sound of Zoe’s voice. She was running toward me, her face pale with panic written all over it. Owen was right behind her glaring down the hallway like he was ready to throw himself into a fight.“Have you heard anything yet?” Zoe gasped coming to a stop in front of me.I shook my head, my voice tight. “Nothing. No one’s seen anything. It’s like she just—disappeared.”“We need to check the cameras” Owen said quickly. “She couldn’t have just walked out without being seen.”A guard took us to the surveillance room and I wa

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Chaos

ZOE’S POV I was sitting across from Owen in the office flipping through a folder for our next investor meeting, when the door burst open so hard it hit the wall with a bang.“Austin?” I blinked in surprise standing up immediately. He stormed in, teeth gritted and rage flashing in his eyes. My heart sank.“You knew,” he said sharply, voice shaking from rage. “You knew the whole time.”“I—what?” I took a step toward him, stunned. He didn’t wait. He threw something down on the table between us. It slid across the surface and stopped in front of me. A printed sheet. A DNA result.I picked it up slowly. My eyes scanned the lines, the names, the matches.Zoe Packer – Jamie Perkins: Match.Austin Perkins – Jamie Perkins: Match.I swallowed hard.He knew. The world tilted slightly under my feet. The secret was out in the open.“Austin—” I whispered.“Don’t,” he cut me off sharply. “Don’t play dumb. You knew. You knew that I was living with your sister—thinking she was you—raising a child wit

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    This painful light.

AUSTIN’S POV ‘How could she trick me like this? Why on earth has she been deceiving me?’ I thought to myself as I sat by the bed staring at her—at Zoe.Her face was so pale under the hospital light, almost fragile-looking. Her chest rose and fell with quiet, steady breaths. She looked peaceful now but all I could see was the storm she left in her wake.I was heartbroken and it wasn’t because she was hurt but because I was starting to understand the kind of pain I had been living with without knowing.I rubbed my hands together slowly trying to make sense of everything that had happened. I was supposed to come here wanting to be by her side when she woke up to hold her hand and tell her everything would be okay. But now… all I had were questions. So she’s not Jamie’s mother. She never was. That lie alone knocked the wind out of me. But the implications—God, the implications. I looked at her again and felt a bitter ache in my chest. I remembered the way she would smile at Jamie, how s

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Broke something loose in me.

ZOE’S POV I wasn’t expecting Austin’s call. Not with everything that was happening. So when he asked if we could have lunch I almost said no because I wasn’t free at the time. But there was something in his voice, tired and low like someone clutching at air just to stay upright. So I agreed to it.We met at a quiet place near the hospital somewhere that didn’t buzz too loudly with life or laughter. He was already there by the time I arrived. He sat by the window grasping his glass of water like it was the only thing holding him together. “Hey” I said sitting down opposite him.He looked up and gave me a faint, polite smile but not real. “Hey. Thanks for coming.”“I was kind of surprised you called,” I admitted putting my bag down. “For a second I thought something had happened.”“No” he said quickly. “Nothing new with Zoe… she’s still unconscious but the doctors say there's nothing to worry about.”I nodded relieved a little but still cautious. He sat back, shoulders tight. “I’ve be

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Walking into something deeper

ZOE’S POV“Austin” I said catching his attention. Owen and I had been invited to meet with a group of local business owners last minute. I wasn’t expecting to see Austin here of all places. He was standing at the back of the room his face looked worn and his eyes darker beneath. It was more than just tiredness. It was something deeper. The meeting had just ended and I walked straight to him.He looked back when he heard me call his name and his eyes met mine. “Chloe” he said with a nod and his voice weary.“How is Zoe?” I asked, already bracing myself.“She’s… recovering” he replied hands tucked into his pockets. “Still unconscious but stable now. Out of danger. The doctor said we made the right call. They had to terminate the pregnancy immediately to save her.”My breath caught. I nodded slowly. “I’m glad she’s okay. That's the most important thing.”Austin met my eyes and there was a quiet moment between us.“Thank you Chloe,” he said quietly. “For telling me. For stepping in when

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Slow. Silent tears.

AUSTIN’S POV I couldn’t sit. Couldn’t breathe. I had been pacing back and forth since we arrived and still, the door to the operating room remained shut.Every second Zoe was in there, unconscious, felt like a silent scream in my chest. The door finally creaked open. A doctor stepped out, her face lined with exhaustion and gravity.“Mr. Perkins?” she asked softly.I walked toward her pushing back my fear. “How is she?”The doctor exhaled. “We’re doing all we can. But her life is in danger. The ectopic pregnancy has ruptured. There’s internal bleeding.”I felt nervous looking at her. My body went cold.“You have to make a decision right now,” she said. “We need to remove the pregnancy immediately. If we don’t, we may not be able to save her.”I didn’t even think. “Do it” I said. “Do whatever it takes. Save her. Just—save my wife.”She gave a nod and disappeared back through the swinging doors. And I stood there—paralyzed. It felt like hours. Maybe it was. Everything around me faded o
