ZOE'S POV

The shot still rang out.

I was trembling and out of breath. The gun fell to the floor. And then I saw blood.

Not mine.

Alexis stared in shock as she grabbed her stomach, blood spreading on her hands and clothes. She let out a weak pained moan.

I froze for a moment. Couldn’t think. My mouth opened but no sound came out.

Then my body reacted. I went beside her. “Oh God” My voice cracked. “Oh God I didn’t mean to… Alexis—no—please, no.”

She was breathing hard and losing consciousness. I paused before pressing my hands to the wound. There was blood all around us. Warm. Sticky. Terrifying.

“I didn’t mean to” I gasped shaking my head as tears fell uncontrollably. “It was an accident. I swear, I didn’t mean to. I just— I was trying to stop you.”

Alexis groaned trying to lift her hand to push me away but she had no strength left.

“Stay with me” I begged in panic. “Just stay awake please.”

I frantically looked around for something—anything. Then I remembered her phone. She had dropp

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    After the Darkness

ZOE'S POV I was cleared physically. They said I was fine. I wasn’t hurt badly only small cuts on my hands and a bruise on my forehead. But the important part was ignored, the cracks in me.My mind was stuck on replay. The echo of the gunshot. The look in Alexis’ eyes. My hands, covered in her blood. Her gasp. My scream. The way time seemed to slow as I called Owen… hands shaking, voice hollow. They gave me a hot drink afterward but I didn’t drink it. I just held the cup and stared into it like the steam could clear my mind. When I walked out, Austin was waiting. He looked worried. “Are you okay?” he asked quietly.I nodded too quickly. It was a lie and he probably knew it. But I didn’t want to fall apart again. Not here.“Can I talk to Jamie?” I asked. “Just for a minute.”Austin looked at me, hesitating for only a beat before saying, “Of course. But… would you rather come with me instead? You still look shaken. I don’t think you should be alone tonight Zoe. And being with Jamie mi

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Mistake, I can't undo

OWEN'S POV “So Zoe is in the hands of a dangerous and unstable woman?” Austin asked coldly. His face turned dark with rage. “That seems to be the case.” I muttered. “Why would you let her get that close to Zoe, knowing the kind of person she is?” He spoke loudly.“I didn’t let her” I snapped my voice raw and defensive. “She showed up out of nowhere. At my house and then at the office. I didn’t even know how she found me.”“You didn’t know?” Austin shot back, stepping closer. “You’re supposed to be this careful, calculated man. Isn’t that what you pride yourself on? And yet you let a woman you used to be engaged to, a woman you know is unstable, walk right into Zoe’s life and put her in danger?”I swallowed, feeling ashamed. “When she walked in on me and Zoe... I confronted her later that day. She acted like she was done. She said she was leaving. She said she was moving on.”Austin shook his head disgusted. “You used to seem smart. Sharp. But you actually let that woman trick you?

OWEN'S POV I hadn’t slept in over twenty-four hours. My office was dark despite the daylight outside. I had drawn the blinds to shut out the world because it didn’t feel right for the sun to be shining while Zoe was missing—possibly hurt, scared… or worse. My desk was covered in open files, maps, and printouts. Security footage from the area. I had men working around the clock. Every surveillance system, every possible lead. Nothing. Like she vanished off the face of the earth. And it was killing me.I have never felt so powerless. So useless. I was used to being in control, always a step ahead. But this… this was a different kind of war. And I was losing. The door flung open suddenly.“I said I don’t want to be—”I looked up and froze.Austin.He stood there, stiff and red-eyed, with my receptionist behind him, apologizing breathlessly and trying to stop him.“It’s okay” I said flatly to her. She hesitated then nodded and backed away.Austin walked in aggressive. I could already see

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    It had to be me

ZOE'S POV I heard several footsteps coming towards me, followed by a female voice, casual and confident. “Sorry to have kept you waiting.”I froze. That's not Chloe's voice.I tensed up, trying to see. The echoing footsteps got closer. Two people stepped out of the darkness, as they came closer, they were two men…and then behind them, I saw her.I stared in shock. “Alexis?” I whispered behind the tape, backing into the wall. It was confusing. I thought I was imagining it. But I wasn’t.“Take the tape off her mouth,” Alexis ordered casually, waving a hand at one of the men. “And untie her. We don’t need the theatrics anymore.”He yanked the tape off my mouth then untied my hands and feet. I gasped rubbing my arms and looking at her in horror.“You?” I rasped. “You did this?”She smiled sweetly, mockingly. “I hope you’ve been comfortable.”I stared at her in shock. “So it was you. You lied to Owen… You said you were letting go. You said you were flying back!”Alexis tilted her head, gi

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Where are you, Zoe?

ZOE'S POV I breathed out slowly, still standing where Owen had left me, enjoying the moment. It was unexpectedly peaceful. And for the first time in days it felt like a sense of peace settled in. I watched Owen as he walked away to get us something to drink and maybe some snacks. I smiled to myself. He really was trying after everything that has happened, after all the mess and emotional wreckage, he still wanted to be there for me. And the part of me that longed for peace wanted to let him. Then I heard someone coming behind me. I turned instinctively, expecting to see Owen coming back already—but something felt off. It was too soon. The steps weren’t hurried, but they were heavy. My stomach dropped. When I turned fully, it wasn’t Owen. I did not have the time to scream. Someone attacked me from behind and held me tightly as I fought back. Then something pressed hard over my mouth—soft fabric. A handkerchief. The smell was immediate. Strong. Sweet. Chemical. I struggled and fo
