The morning began like any other beautiful lie.

Jeff made coffee shirtless, humming some old indie tune while I curled up on the sunlit corner of the couch with a travel magazine. His golden retriever energy—always infectious, always warm—had infected me, too. I was smiling without realizing it.

“We could go to Tulum,” he said, handing me a mug. “Or maybe Lisbon? Beach and pastries.”

I leaned against him, my fingers trailing the ink on the map. “Somewhere no one knows us. Somewhere quiet.”

“Just you, me, and zero press.”

And for the first time in a long time, I believed we might actually get it. Peace. Freedom. Something of our own.

We packed light. Rosa had volunteered to stay and watch the house while we were gone. I kissed her cheek on our way out the door, grateful to be leaving behind a mansion that held too many memories of Camille’s ghost.

Or so I thought.

We were halfway to the airport when Rosa called.

Her voice was panicked. “Demi... you need to come back. Now.”

  • RUTHLESS BILLIONAIRE EX-HUSBAND CHASED ME BACK   CHAPTER 153

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains, casting delicate patterns on the hardwood floor. I sat at the edge of our bed, a steaming cup of coffee cradled in my hands, watching the world outside awaken. The tranquility was deceptive, a fragile veneer over the undercurrents of tension that had settled into our lives.Eden had been with us for a month now. Her presence had become a constant, her laughter echoing through the halls, her sketches adorning the walls of the guest room. She was integrating, slowly but surely, into the fabric of our daily existence. Yet, beneath the surface, I sensed an unease—a shadow that loomed just beyond the periphery.Jeff entered the room, his tie askew and a furrow etched deep between his brows. He paused, taking in the scene before him, and offered a weary smile."Morning," he said, leaning down to press a kiss to my forehead."Morning," I replied, setting my cup down. "You look like you didn't sleep."He sighed, adjusting his tie. "Just som

It started with a letter. It always does, doesn’t it?One unassuming envelope slipped under the door of a house already heavy with unresolved history. One signature from a dead woman that cracked open a vault Jeff and I didn’t know we were standing on.Eden’s eyes lit up when she read it.She wasn’t greedy. That much I could tell. But she was curious. Cautious. And she had no idea what this “trust” truly meant—not in dollars, but in weight. It wasn’t just about money. It was about names. About legacy. About control. And about me.“You don’t have to worry,” Eden said later that morning, sitting across from me with her mug of peppermint tea. “I’m not going to contest anything. I don’t need some giant inheritance to prove I’m Jeff’s daughter.”But that wasn’t the point.“You’re not contesting anything, Eden,” I said, managing a calm smile. “The papers say it’s already yours. And that means a lot of legal reworkings, especially because that trust—”“Was used in the merger,” she finished,

It had been two weeks since Camille vanished from our lives again—this time, not with a bang, but a whimper wrapped in paperwork. The paternity test? Fabricated. The supposed pregnancy? A lie, backed by a desperate woman and a shady private clinic she’d paid to fake the results. She disappeared once the fraud was uncovered, likely to avoid the legal storm that was chasing her down in three countries.I should’ve felt relief. But what I felt instead was hollow. Not because I doubted Jeff’s innocence anymore—but because trust, once cracked, never settles back in quite the same way.We were trying. Slowly. Carefully. Rebuilding what Camille tried to burn down.Jeff cooked more. I read aloud at night. We’d gone on long walks near the bluff where the wind couldn’t hear our doubts. And we’d even booked that vacation. Two weeks in Southern Italy. No phones. No news. Just the Mediterranean and enough white wine to forget everything that had come before. But as fate would have it—peace didn’t

It wasn’t the rain that unsettled me—it was the silence that followed it.Chicago’s sky wept cold and gray as I stood in front of a weathered brownstone in Old Town. Carla’s directions had led me here. Number 1468, two cracked steps and a squeaky gate. The kind of house that held stories in its bones. My story, maybe.I clutched the thin file folder Carla had given me—birth records, a blurred ID photo, a partial family tree traced through public archives. It was all circumstantial. Fragile. But it was enough.Celeste Montague was a ghost with a heartbeat. One who might’ve never meant to be found.I rang the doorbell.Nothing.I pressed it again.Still silence.Just as I began to turn away, a shuffling sound came from behind the door. Then a latch, slow and deliberate. I held my breath. The woman who opened it looked nothing like I imagined—but somehow, exactly how I needed her to.She was in her late fifties, maybe older. Gray hair pulled into a bun, cheeks hollow from time, but her e

Grief had a strange texture—something like silk soaked in oil. It slithered over your skin, too soft to scream at, too slick to hold. That's what I felt in the days after Camille stormed into our lives like a hurricane and declared war with a folded piece of paper.A paper that claimed Jeff was the father of her unborn child.I still couldn’t say it out loud.Couldn’t even fully look at Jeff, not the same way. Not without seeing Camille’s smirk burned into the back of my eyes.We were living in the same house again, but it felt like a museum of silence. He stayed on the west side in the master suite, and I took up refuge in the glass room I once called my studio. Rosa brought me food. I left my plates clean and my words untouched.Jeff tried knocking once.I didn’t open the door.A week later, Rosa came in while I was lying on the cold tiles, staring at the high ceiling. My sketchpad was blank. The charcoal in my hand hadn’t moved in hours.“She’s gone,” Rosa said gently.I didn’t ans
