Chapter 3 A Bow for My Future

مؤلف: Sunny Steppe
"Shawn, did you take it?" Victoria looked down at me with undisguised contempt.

Daisy, who was standing beside her, immediately started screeching, "It had to be him! His father delivers takeout, and his mother runs a food stand. They've never seen a nice pen in their lives!"

The classroom erupted in mocking laughter.

I bit my lip hard and retorted hotly, "I didn't steal it! I don't need your stupid pen!"

"How dare you show me attitude! I'm calling your parents."

My father rushed into the office 30 minutes later. He was still wearing his delivery uniform, and it was drenched in sweat.

My mother had rushed over without even taking her apron off. It was still stained with grease from the food stand.

Daisy's father was already there by the time they arrived. He was dressed in an expensive designer suit, standing with his arms crossed and a sneer on his face. "So, you're the parents of the little thief?"

Then, he covered his nose in disgust and deliberately took two steps back from my parents.

"Like father, like son. The only thing a trash can raise is another trash. You brought a little piece of garbage into this world just to make everyone else's life miserable. Pay for the pen and get your kid out of this school."

My mother's eyes turned red as she hurried in front of me, shielding me with her body. "My son didn't steal anything! We may be poor, but we don't take what's not ours."

"Oh, really? Yours is the poorest family in the class. If it wasn't him, then who else could it be?" Victoria mocked from the side.

I looked up at my father.

Back when we lived in the old neighborhood, he would've grabbed the nearest beer bottle and smashed it if someone looked at him the wrong way.

But now, his fists were clenched so tightly at his sides that the veins stood out across the backs of his hands, his fingernails digging into his palms.

He glanced at me and noticed how I was trembling with fear. Then, he bent at the waist. "I'm sorry, Mr. Ward. I'm sorry, Ms. Leigh."

My father gave them a deep bow, his voice shaking. "How much was the pen? We'll pay for it. Please don't expel my son."

My mother bowed too, tears splashing onto her oil-stained shoes.

My vision was instantly filled with floating comments.

"This is making me cry. Frankie used to take on seven guys all by himself. He was the epitome of 'I'd rather die than lower my pride.' Now, he's bowing for his son."

"Frankie worked three straight all-night delivery shifts just to scrape together this semester's tuition. Tanya scraped up her knee running from officers clearing out night market vendors, but she didn't once complain about the pain."

"These two dummies are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Yet, all they care about is protecting their son's future."

I looked at the comments across my vision. I looked at my parents, bowing so humbly before people who did not deserve it. Right then, it felt like someone was driving a knife through my heart.

Just then, one comment streaked across my vision.

"The stupid pen was never missing! It's in the hidden compartment at the bottom of Daisy's backpack. She stuffed it in there herself this morning and forgot about it."

I froze for a split second. Then, I jerked free from my mother's hand and charged at Daisy like a cannonball.

"What are you doing?" Her father jumped in surprise.

I grabbed Daisy's backpack off the chair. Then, I yanked open the hidden zipper at the bottom and turned the bag upside down. Sure enough, a fountain pen clattered onto the marble floor.

The contempt on Victoria's face instantly froze, while Daisy's father looked like he had just swallowed a fly.

My eyes were glistening with angry tears as I pointed at the pen on the floor. "I told you I didn't steal it! You were the ones accusing an innocent person!"

My mother immediately straightened her spine.

She pulled me tightly into her arms, glared at the two of them with reddened eyes, and held her head high. "You've found your pen. Now, you owe my son an apology."

Daisy's father turned livid with humiliation as he sneered. "Apologize? Just because he didn't steal it this time doesn't mean he won't steal something in the future. Gutter rats like you belong in the gutters."

Then, he grabbed Daisy by the arm and stormed out in his polished shoes without sparing us another glance.

That day, my parents held my hands as we sauntered out of the school with our heads held high.

"Shawn, please. Put in a good word for Victor. He'll never do it again. Please have mercy on us!" George's wife cried. My father let out a cold laugh as he straightened from his slight hunch. The easygoing look had vanished from his face, replaced by the hard edge he had worn back when he was still running the streets. He grabbed the large, coarse broom leaning behind the door and swung it at them without a shred of mercy."Get the hell out! Did you ever think about showing us some mercy when you ruined my leg all those years ago? Did you ever think about being merciful when you bullied Tanya when she was just 15?"Yet, now you're here pretending to be pitiful? I'll break your damn legs if you ever dare show your face in front of Shawn again!"The broom slammed across Victor's back as my father drove him and his mother out the front door. Then, he slammed the door shut with a bang and locked it for good measure.I had never felt anything as satisfying as watching them finally get

You were never trash. You're my heroes.'Public opinion about my family did a complete 180 now that the truth was finally out in the open. The school issued an official statement to every student, clearing my name and strongly condemning those who had spread malicious rum

Eventually, the school administration called me into the dean's office due to the enormous pressure in the form of a petition signed by the school's affluent parents. The dean looked grim as he slammed a stack of printed forum posts onto the desk in front of me."Shawn, your grades are outstanding, but we cannot tolerate rumors that damage the school's reputation. If you can't put an end to this before the SATs, then we'll have no choice but to revoke your guaranteed admission spot for the sake of the school's reputation. "We may even have to ask you to withdraw."When I returned to the classroom, I was met with strange looks, whispered conversations, and open hostility from every direction. As I read the floating comments in front of me, I felt like the monster in my heart was trying to claw itself out of my heart."George is pure evil! "This is the money you paid for with your lives. And… this is me paying it back," I whispered tearfully.I hired a cab and took my father to the best orthopedic hospital in the city the first thing that morning.I paid whatever it took to have the state's top orthopedic specialist perform revision surgery on the metal plate in his leg.Fortunately, the doctor smiled after taking a look at my father's X-rays. "Once you've had the surgery, you'll be right as rain as long as you keep up with your rehab. You won't be needing a cane anymore."My father gently touched the thick cast wrapped around his leg and cried like a child as he lay in his hospital bed. He covered his face with his weathered hands, his tears through his cracked fingers as he cried away years of humiliation and pain. Then, I used the remaining money to rent a legitimate storefront in the busiest part of the night market for my mother.I had a brand-new roll-up door, bright lights, and air conditioning installed i

The blond gangster raised the steel pipe as if he was about to bring it down on my right arm.I stood my ground, betraying not even the slightest hint of panic.Instead, I pulled my phone from my pocket, tapped the record button, and let the pale glow of the screen light up my emotionless face."I've already called the police. They'll be here in three minutes. How much did George pay you? Was it 10,000 or 20,000?"I spoke as casually as if I were merely haggling over prices at a farmers market and not being threatened with a steel pipe. The thugs froze and exchanged uneasy glances. They clearly hadn't expected a high school kid to stay this calm with a steel pipe pointed at him.I let out a scoff and dangled the bait that I'd prepared in advance."I'll pay double what he promised you. However, I want the recording of him telling you to beat me up, along with the transactions of him illegally using his company's funds to pay you. "Think about it. You'll make 20,000 at most if y

George's face turned puce, utterly livid. The veins on his forehead bulged as he pointed a finger at my face and roared in rage, "You little punk! How dare you talk to me like that! Who the hell do you think you are?"Victor was even angrier than he was. He felt so humiliated that he actually flipped a desk over on the spot.I stared them down coldly, my voice firm as I spoke into the microphone so even the people sitting at the furthest edges of the classroom could hear me."My dad got hurt doing honest work. Every dollar he earned was clean, and he did that with his own two hands. He's a thousand times more honorable than a heartless contractor like you, someone who profits off other people's suffering and treats human lives like they're worthless."If you insult my dad one more time, I promise Victor won't be able to hold his head up high in this class again."I crushed both father and son with my grades and composure.I left George and Victor utterly humiliated right in front
